Diamond Magazine
Welcome! "The stories in these pages demonstrate what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose" Welcome to the September/October edition of Diamond Magazine. After what has been an incredibly hot summer, I’m ready to welcome the change of season, with autumn bringing renewed focus and fresh opportunities for the months ahead. This edition of Diamond highlights something that sits at the heart of everything we do at Gatwick Diamond Business: the power of connection. Whether it's businesses collaborating, developing future talent, embracing innovation or building international partnerships, the stories in these pages demonstrate what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose. One of the themes that stands out most strongly is the importance of investing in people. Whether it's developing future leaders, supporting employee wellbeing, creating opportunities for young people or helping organisations navigate change, the success of any business ultimately depends on its people. That is why I am particularly pleased to see the continued momentum behind our Diamond Future Leaders Programme. Designed and delivered by expert members from within our network, this exciting initiative will help develop the next generation of managers and leaders while strengthening businesses across our membership community. The importance of nurturing future talent is also highlighted in the inspiring feature showcasing the collaboration between Nescot, Wates Group and their partners to provide meaningful workplace experiences for young people. Their work demonstrates the positive impact that can be achieved when education and industry come together to inspire future careers and develop the workforce our region will rely on in years to come. Another important theme running throughout this issue is opportunity. Brett North's feature on inward investment highlights the growing international profile of the Gatwick Diamond and the exciting partnerships being developed with regions such as Selangor in Malaysia and

Shandong in China. As a globally connected region, we are exceptionally well placed to attract investment, create new commercial relationships and support businesses looking to expand into international markets. These partnerships have the potential to benefit organisations of all sizes across our community.
is helping businesses across the Gatwick Diamond bring their stories to life through professional video, photography and audio production. Take a look at their feature on page 18 to discover how their team is making highquality content creation more accessible to organisations of all sizes.
This edition's Member Spotlight features Jenny Rayner MBE, Chief Executive of The Lucy Rayner Foundation. Jenny speaks passionately about the value of relationships, collaboration and community, and her experience perfectly captures what so many members tell us about being part of gdb. Her commitment to supporting young people and families through mental health services is truly inspiring, and we're delighted to share her story with you.
Finally, thank you to all our contributors, advertisers, members and partners.Your willingness to share knowledge, celebrate success and support one another is what makes the Gatwick Diamond such a vibrant and valuable business community. I hope you enjoy this edition and, as always, the gdb team and I look forward to supporting you and helping you make the most of the opportunities ahead this autumn.
As we look ahead, there are plenty of opportunities to reconnect with fellow members through our busy programme of events, including the Gatwick Business Show, our Members' Meetings, Connected events and the launch of the Gatwick Diamond Business Awards 2027.

Member Spotlight Jenny Rayner MBE The Lucy Rayner Foundation The Lucy Rayner Foundation is a mental health charity that offers services to young people, their families and significant other for the prevention of mental health crisis through counselling, raising awareness, campaigning, training and fundraising.
Being a member and having the opportunity to speak and share information about our charity, has made a huge difference to how we are seen by the other members. Resulting in valuable conversation, then leading to support and collaborations.
1. What appealed to you about joining gdb?
5. gdb puts on lots of different types of events - what’s your favourite?
I was introduced to Gatwick Diamond Business through a friend who was already a member. I went as his plus one and found the networking to be excellent.
Being quite new to gdb I am slowly trying out the different events but I am really enjoying the monthly networking meetings and then going along to the stand alone charity meetings, where I get a chance to speak to the other charity members and talk about the sector in more detail.
Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and I knew that I would make some great connections by becoming a member. I love collaboration and this was a great place to build those relationships. 2. What was the thing that surprised you about gdb? I was surprised by the diversity of the members, the reach, the areas of expertise and the humour. It was fun and there was a lot of energy in the room that held my attention throughout. The gdb team are incredible, I can turn up alone and still have a great experience at their meetings every single time.
What’s also great, there is always a presentation that is directly beneficial to the charity with some great learning and take aways. 6. What’s different about gdb compared to other networking you do? I’ve personally never been to a networking event like gdb! It’s friendly, the atmosphere is electric, it’s fun and I have a laugh as well as meeting some incredible likeminded people who also show up every month.
3. What’s the biggest single thing you’ve got from being a member of gdb?
You get a sense of familiarity and comfortability when you arrive at any of gdb events plus the food is really good!
The biggest thing that being a gdb member is that I can get access to all the members and their expertise.
7. What’s your top tip for getting the most out of networking?
If there is a specific issue, a problem or a need, I can reach out to any member and ask for a meeting and if I am unsure, I can speak to gdb themselves and they will facilitate an introduction to the right person who can help me. I don’t know anywhere else I can get that level of professionalism that gives me confidence and trust in the membership. 4. What difference has being a member of gdb made to your business? As a charity it is really hard to engage corporates and local businesses, for them to get a good understanding of the work that we are doing as a charity, within the community.
6
Don’t be afraid to go and join in a conversation because everyone is welcoming, they want to hear what you have to say. Just be yourself and remember this is about the people, developing great relationships and building trust, everything else will follow.
8. Besides the events, what else do you get out of your gdb membership? Over the short time I have been going to gdb meetings, I have built some meaningful relationships that have developed into important collaborative work. This could never have happened if I wasn’t a gdb member. Building a charity is hard work but the support and the community that sits within gdb is exceptional in offering knowledge and resources to us. Being a gdb member is like being in a family that welcomes, supports and encourages you in promoting yourself and your business. I am so thankful. www.thelucyraynerfoundation.com

What Could Burnham's Government Mean for Development in the South East? Joshua Mellor from Marrons discusses the implications for the region of the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham's arrival in Downing Street could mark a significant shift in how growth, development and investment are planned across England.
There is also likely to be continuity in planning reform. A revised National Planning Policy Framework is expected to provide greater support for development in sustainable locations, particularly within existing settlements, around well-connected transport hubs and on suitable Grey Belt sites.
Having built his political reputation around devolution and place-based growth in Greater Manchester, Burnham is expected to bring a stronger focus on regional empowerment and strategic planning to government. For the South East, the implications could be significant. As one of the UK's most economically important regions, it remains a major driver of national growth - home to globally significant businesses, strong transport links and key economic assets including Gatwick Airport. Growth pressures are unlikely to ease, but the way growth is planned and delivered may be about to change. One of the most significant developments is likely to be an acceleration, and potentially a "super-charging", of local government reorganisation and devolution. Burnham's government is expected to continue shifting powers from Whitehall to strategic authorities and elected mayors, giving them greater influence over housing, infrastructure and economic development.
However, a more permissive policy framework does not necessarily mean a simpler planning system.
Joshua Mellor economic and social outcomes. Planning is increasingly being viewed as more than just a mechanism for managing development – it is now recognised as a tool for delivering jobs, investment and long-term prosperity. This could be particularly important in the South East, where housing markets, transport networks and economic activity often extend beyond local authority boundaries. A more strategic approach has the potential to better align development with infrastructure and economic priorities across the region.
For areas proposed for mayoral strategic authorities, such as Sussex, this could create opportunities to coordinate growth more effectively and secure greater control over investment decisions.
While Burnham's success has been closely associated with Manchester, the success of his government will depend on delivering growth across the country.
It may also increase the motivation for neighbouring areas, including Kent, to pursue similar arrangements.
The South East's importance is unlikely to be challenged, but the region cannot assume its priorities will automatically rise to the top of the national agenda.
The implications for planning are considerable. Strategic authorities are likely to play a larger role in determining where growth should be directed, what infrastructure is needed and how development contributes to wider
Strong voices from political leaders and the business community will be essential in ensuring it continues to secure investment alongside competing priorities elsewhere.
www.gatwickdiamondbusiness.com
While technology, AI and planning reforms may improve efficiency, the long-term direction of travel is towards a more coordinated and strategically led approach. For developers, landowners and investors across the South East, the challenge will be less about adapting to a new planning regime and more about understanding how to operate successfully within this evolving framework, where development is increasingly expected to support wider ambitions around growth, infrastructure, employment and place-making. Joshua Mellor is Planning Director at Marrons, a national multi-disciplinary planning and design consultancy with offices in Tunbridge Wells and London, advising clients across planning, design, heritage, transport, landscape and socio-economic matters. www.marrons.co.uk

B Local Brighton launches drive to unite Sussex’s growing B Corp community B Local Brighton, the volunteer-led network connecting B Corps and other responsible businesses across Brighton and Hove and the wider Sussex region, has launched a new drive to increase participation among the county’s growing B Corp community. B Lab UK, the not-for-profit organisation behind B Corp certification, has confirmed that approximately 90 Certified B Corporations operate across East and West Sussex – but around half of the county’s B Corps are not yet involved with the volunteer-led network, which is free to join.
Schnitman, senior event sustainability consultant at Worlds Better, expanding the volunteer leadership team from two to four. One of 18 B Local groups across the UK, B Local Brighton helps local businesses share knowledge, build relationships and take collective action. Its programme includes workshops and practical support around B Lab’s new standards, including an upcoming live gap-analysis session where businesses
can assess their position and work through the requirements alongside other local companies. The appointments come as businesses begin transitioning to B Lab’s new more rigorous global standards. Published in April 2026, the framework introduces mandatory, independently verified performance requirements across seven impact areas. The first companies achieved certification under the new standards in June 2026. Demi Heath, co-chair of B Local Brighton, said: “The new standards are a significant shift. Being part of a local group means they can work through the changes with people facing similar challenges. Expanding the leadership team gives us greater capacity to reach more of Sussex’s responsible businesses and create opportunities for them to learn from one another.”
B Local Brighton has also appointed Alex Hankinson, co-owner and joint managing director of Brighton PR agency Midnight, and Greta Leipute, who leads client experience at sustainable tour operator Pura Aventura, as new co-chairs. They join existing co-chairs Demi Heath, founder of Hearth Sustainability and co-founder of Sussex Impact Pathway, and Ariela

How many people does it take? Q: How many people does it take to translate a business contract? •
You plus your favourite AI tool.
•
2 professional linguists, 1 to translate & 1 to proofread.
•
1 professional linguist, plus their choice of software.
Answer: All of the above might be right in different situations, although if you're choosing a., make sure that draft quality is all you need.
Revision is a specialist, behind-the-scenes task, like a good book editor.
a. A reasonable solution if you're not signing anything and need the gist of what this contract says. If there are legal terms relating to a particular location or market, you can't count on this AI version, because AI can only re-use content that already exists on the web.
c. A great choice and increasingly relevant when time and money is of the essence. An experienced translator with a subject specialism, who is equipped with the best tech, offers you a very powerful and cost-effective solution.
b. A very wise choice if you're making a significant business decision, adding your signature and committing to an ongoing business relationship with a supplier or customer.

10 years of MJV Consulting: local, family-run with growth in mind This June, MJV Consulting celebrated ten years in business: a proud milestone for our familyrun HR consultancy.
With the Employment Rights Act 2025 now here, we are also helping businesses understand what is changing in employment law and prepare for the key dates ahead.
It felt like the right moment to thank the local businesses who have trusted us over the past decade, and to introduce ourselves to those we have not yet had the pleasure of working with. Founded by Mary Ewen in 2016, after more than 20 years leading HR and compliance in a senior corporate role, MJV Consulting grew from a simple idea: local businesses needed experienced, practical HR support they could rely on. Ten years later, that purpose remains the same. We are not a call centre or a faceless portal. We are a close-knit team who take the time to get to know our clients and their businesses. Alongside, Claire Cross and Ewen Bonnyman, we bring a personal, partnership-led approach to the people challenges employers face.
Alongside this, our wellbeing support helps employers create more supportive working environments, while our HR systems work helps businesses move away from manual spreadsheets and manage people data more securely and efficiently.
Ewen Bonnyman Today, we support businesses with employee relations, line manager training, workplace wellbeing and HR systems implementations.
From first employees to restructures and digital HR transformation, our approach is always the same: honest, practical advice from people who genuinely care about your business and your people. Here’s to the next ten years. www.mjvconsulting.co.uk
In 2026, we have seen growing demand from employers wanting to equip their managers with the tools and confidence to lead well, handle difficult conversations and navigate increasingly complex workplace issues.
The Biggest Technology Decisions Aren't About Technology Business owners are being asked to make increasingly complex technology decisions outside their area of expertise.
Today, technology influences almost every part of an organisation. Decisions about AI affect client confidentiality. Cyber security has
Should we introduce AI into the business? Are our employees using it safely? Is our cyber security keeping pace? Should we move more systems to the cloud? How much should we invest in automation?
become a board-level responsibility. Cloud services have changed how and where people work. Even business continuity planning now depends heavily on the resilience of technology.
These aren't technical questions. They're business decisions with implications for productivity, risk, compliance and reputation.
Knowing what matters
Technology has become a business issue A decade ago, technology discussions were often centred on replacing servers, upgrading hardware and keeping systems running. Those things still matter, but they rarely determine whether a business is well prepared for the future.
www.gatwickdiamondbusiness.com
The challenge for business leaders isn't understanding every new development. That's impossible. It's knowing which technologies deserve attention, which introduce unnecessary risk and which genuinely support the long-term goals of the business. The value of asking better questions I've found that the organisations making the best technology decisions aren't necessarily the first to adopt something new. They're the ones who take the time to ask the right questions before making a commitment.
Russ McKenzie Technology will continue to evolve. Good judgement, thoughtful planning and a willingness to challenge assumptions remain just as valuable as they've always been. www.ntrustsystems.co.uk

Think Local:The PR Power of Your Patch Most organisations want national media coverage. But if you’re a business or charity serving a particular community, local media can be just as valuable – and sometimes easier to secure.
Never underestimate the reach. A story in your local paper or a five-minute radio interview puts you directly in front of the customers, supporters, and employees in your area. Local stories can also travel. Regional journalists feed stories to national outlets, while national journalists often look to local coverage when they’re hunting for a compelling human angle.
Build the relationship before you need it
So how do you become a journalist’s go-to local contact?
Think beyond the newspaper
Know your patch Identify the reporters, editors and producers covering your area. Find out the kind of stories they cover. A little homework goes a long way. Give them something useful
Gina Hollands Local newspapers, radio stations and community publications are often underresourced and hungry for genuinely good stories. Give them something their audience cares about and you’re more likely to get the space to tell it properly.
Journalists aren’t waiting for your latest corporate announcement. They want stories their readers will care about: local people, local impact, surprising developments, useful information or a strong human-interest angle.
Don’t only get in touch when you have news to push. Introduce yourself. Offer to provide expert comment on issues in your sector. Be helpful, responsive and easy to deal with. When a relevant story breaks, you want your name to be the one they remember.
Local radio, podcasts community websites, newsletters, Facebook groups and parish magazines can all have highly engaged audiences – and they’re often looking for good content. Pro tip: Before sending your next press release, ask yourself: what makes this matter to people here? Find the local angle before you hit send. Future Ban on Upwards Only Rent Review A significant change to the commercial property market is on the horizon. The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act 2026 has introduced a ban on upwards-only rent review provisions in most commercial leases in England and Wales, with implementation expected in 2027. Once in force, the ban will prevent rent review mechanisms from operating solely in an upward direction. It will apply not only to traditional open market rent reviews but also to index-linked reviews and certain turnover rent arrangements where rent cannot fall below a specified level. Fixed or stepped rent increases agreed at the outset of a lease will remain permissible. Further government consultation on cap and collar mechanisms is expected before the change comes into effect. The legislation also contains a retrospective element. Certain renewal arrangements entered into on or after 17 March 2026 may be affected if the resulting lease is completed after the ban comes into force.
12
Landlords and tenants currently negotiating transactions should therefore review proposed lease structures carefully. For tenants, the changes could provide greater protection against paying rents that exceed market levels and create a more balanced allocation of risk at rent review. However, these benefits may come with tradeoffs, including higher initial rents, shorter lease terms and more frequent reviews. Landlords may benefit from the opportunity to explore alternative rent review structures and modernise leasing strategies, but they are also likely to face less predictable income streams, valuation challenges and increased complexity across property portfolios. Although further detail is awaited, both landlords and occupiers should assess the impact of the new regime now and consider whether current transactions may be affected by the forthcoming changes.

TICKETS ONLY- £35+VAT BOOK YOUR TICKETS TODAY FRS 102 Amendments – Is Your Business Ready? The UK accounting rules, FRS 102 have been amended, with the impact for many businesses being significant. The amendments came into effect for accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026. For businesses across the Gatwick Diamond, understanding the potential impact early will be important, particularly when it comes to revenue recognition and lease accounting. The amendments bring UK GAAP more closely in line with international accounting standards and could have implications beyond the year-end accounts. Depending on customer contracts and lease arrangements, the changes could have a wide reaching impact, affecting reported revenue, EBITDA, profit margins, net current assets, balance sheet totals, gearing and liquidity ratios, loan covenants and other key performance measures. One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a new five-step model for revenue recognition. Businesses will need to consider their customer contracts carefully, www.gatwickdiamondbusiness.com
identifying the promises made to customers, determining the transaction price and establishing when revenue should be recognised.
If you’d like further support on these changes, please reach out to Caroline Milton at cmilton@menzies.co.uk www.menzies.co.uk/contact-us/
Lease accounting is also changing significantly. For most lessees, the distinction between operating and finance leases is being removed, with a right of use asset and corresponding lease liability brought onto the balance sheet. There are exemptions, including for certain short-term leases and leases of low value assets. Businesses should now be reviewing their customer contracts and lease arrangements, assessing the potential financial impact and checking whether their systems and data can support the new requirements. Accounting policies, technical documentation and financial statement disclosures may also need updating. Menzies has created a practical FRS 102 amendments guide and impact checklist to help you identify what the changes could mean for your business: FRS 102 Amendments | Revenue Recognition, Lease Accounting

Exit Strategy in 2026: Key Considerations The UK exit landscape is changing, driven by higher Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and significant changes to Inheritance Tax (IHT). Business owners must now balance value, risk, legacy and lifestyle objectives when deciding how and when to exit.
business assets benefits from 100% Business Relief, with relief above that threshold generally reducing to 50%. For many owners, this increases the effective IHT exposure on business wealth and is prompting a review of succession plans.
In 2026, a successful exit is no longer defined solely by price. The best outcomes combine early preparation, the right exit route, effective tax planning and a carefully managed process to maximise value while supporting the owner's long-term objectives.
The right strategy depends on both the business and the owner's objectives. Trade sales can deliver the highest upfront value and a clean break. Private equity offers partial liquidity with the opportunity to share in future growth.
Preparation remains one of the biggest drivers of value. Businesses that spend two to three years improving financial reporting, strengthening recurring revenues and addressing potential buyer concerns typically achieve better valuations and greater deal certainty.
www.avondale.co.uk
Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) provide a tax-efficient succession option while preserving company culture, particularly for businesses less suited to institutional buyers. Management buyouts (MBOs) ensure leadership continuity, while family succession has become more complex following changes to Business Relief and may require structures such as Family Investment Companies (FICs). Although CGT rates of 18% and 24% remain favourable compared with income tax, the IHT changes are having a greater impact. From April 2026, only the first £1 million of qualifying
The sale process is equally important. Well-managed, competitive sale processes can increase value by 20– 50%, improve deal terms and reduce execution risk by creating competitive tension between multiple credible buyers.
DSARs are on the rise. Is your business ready? allow an extension of up to two months. Searches must be reasonable and proportionate, requests may be made verbally, in writing or through social media, and fees generally cannot be charged. DSARs often arise during employee disputes, workplace grievances or customer complaints, and may signal a wider legal or reputational issue.
Aimee Mitchell Data subject access requests (DSARs) are becoming more common as people better understand their right to access personal data held about them and learn how it is used. Responding can be complex when information is spread across email accounts, shared drives, messaging platforms and business teams. In most cases, organisations must respond without undue delay and within one month, although complex or multiple requests may
16
Poor handling can be costly and time consuming, while missed deadlines, incomplete searches or redaction errors can prompt complaints, regulatory scrutiny, claims and loss of trust. Preparation helps. Businesses should assign clear responsibility, train employees to recognise requests, identify where personal data is held, and document decisions. A consistent process for verifying identity, clarifying scope, searching systems, applying exemptions and checking disclosures reduces delay and error.
AI-powered tools can remove duplicates, identify personal data, support redaction and flag difficult cases, reducing manual review and improving cost certainty. However, legal privilege, third-party information, exemptions and sensitive employment issues still require experienced human judgement and a defensible, documented process. Will your words come back to haunt you? Did you know that sending a message in anger could affect your inheritance rights?
The court held that Ms Wright’s conduct outweighed the factors supporting her claim and that her mother’s decision to exclude her from the will was objectively reasonable.
With written communication now often replacing face-to-face communication, messages sent by text, email, Whatsapp, Messenger or Facebook create contemporaneous, timestamped records of conduct that can be powerful evidence in court.
This case shows that conduct can be decisive in inheritance disputes and may defeat an otherwise strong claim against an estate under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 ("the 1975 Act"), even where there is genuine financial need.
A striking warning for anyone tempted to say exactly what they think online is Wright v Waters [2014] EWHC 3614 (Ch). Ms Wright, the deceased’s daughter, received nothing under her mother’s will and claimed reasonable financial provision under the 1975 Act. Although courts do not generally look favourably upon claims by financially independent adult children, Ms Wright had significant financial and personal needs, including serious medical conditions and wheelchair dependence after a major heart attack.
Sharon Bell At first glance, there was compelling evidence for provision. However, in 2001, Ms Wright wrote to her mother saying she no longer wished to communicate and wished her mother were dead. She then remained estranged and made no attempt to repair the relationship.

The Most Expensive Problem in Your Business Might Not Be on the Balance Sheet Businesses are very good at measuring costs.
It’s taking the time to understand the person.
Salaries. Rent. Software. Marketing. And those subscriptions we’re all definitely going to cancel one day.
That belief sits at the heart of Hire Self. Whether searching for the right person for a business or helping someone overcome what is holding them back, a high-touch, personal approach matters. People aren’t CVs, job titles or problems to be processed. The best results rarely come from treating them that way.
Some of the biggest costs never appear on a spreadsheet. The talented employee who doesn’t put themselves forward because they lack confidence. The manager avoiding a difficult conversation. The leader who knows something needs to change but keeps putting it off. Or the business that needs the right person, not simply another CV. Individually, these can look like small people problems. Collectively, they can become expensive business problems. Because businesses are ultimately about people.
Sometimes the most expensive thing we carry is a problem we’ve simply become used to carrying.
Sarah Matthews When the wrong person is hired, the cost goes far beyond a recruitment fee. When capable people spend more energy second-guessing themselves than moving forward, decisions take longer, conversations don’t happen and opportunities are missed.
Sarah Matthews is founder of Hire Self Limited, providing boutique permanent recruitment and executive search alongside personalised coaching and behavioural change. Sometimes the answer isn’t another process.

RPD FootGolf Championship Raises £2,304 for 4Sight Vision Support This year’s RPD Footgolf Championship delivered another brilliant evening of friendly rivalry, impressive strikes and plenty of goodnatured competition, with businesses from across the region coming together to support a fantastic local cause. The atmosphere was lively from the opening kick, as teams battled for the overall title and the all-important bragging rights. Competition at the top of the leaderboard could not have
been closer, with both teams from Trans Data Management Ltd finishing level. With nothing separating them, the championship had to be decided by a dramatic penalty shootout, with one Trans Data Management team eventually claiming the overall title. There were also some excellent individual performances on the course. Max from Southern Sheeting Supplies Ltd demonstrated impressive power to secure the Longest Drive, while Ronan from BDO showed accuracy and composure to take the Nearest the Pin prize. Although the competition provided plenty of excitement, the most important result was the
generosity shown by everyone involved. Thanks to the support of the teams, organisers and wider business community, the event raised an outstanding £2,304 for 4Sight Vision Support and the RPD Foundation. 4Sight Vision Support is an independent charity helping people across West Sussex who are blind or partially sighted. Through personalised guidance, practical assistance and confidencebuilding support, the charity helps people retain their independence and adjust to life following a sight loss diagnosis. A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended, donated and helped make the event such a success. The evening once again demonstrated the strength of the local business community and what can be achieved when organisations come together in support of an important cause. RPD is already looking forward to welcoming teams back next year for more competition, connection and community impact. www.placedobson.co.uk

AI in Business: Efficiency Still Needs Oversight Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday business life. Organisations are using it to draft documents, summarise meetings, review contracts, prepare reports and support decision-making.
contracts or commercial disputes are involved. An inaccurate first draft may create more work rather than less, especially where decisions are built on information that has not been verified. The strongest approach is to use AI as a support tool. It can help businesses build knowledge, prepare for negotiations and improve internal processes, but it should not replace commercial judgement or professional advice.
The appeal is clear. AI can save time, improve efficiency and help businesses organise information more quickly. However, speed should not be confused with certainty. A polished output may still be inaccurate, incomplete or commercially unsuitable. AI can generate wording, but it cannot fully understand the objectives behind a deal, the importance of a particular concession or the level of risk a business is prepared to accept. There have also been many reported examples of AI producing invented facts, references and legal authorities because they appeared to fit the prompt. These so-called hallucinations can be presented with confidence, making proper fact-checking essential.
Nusrat Qureishi For businesses, the issue is therefore one of governance as much as technology. Clear internal rules are needed around how AI is used, what information can be entered into public tools and which outputs require human review.
As a standard, businesses should implement clear protocols and policies for the use of AI. Combining AI with clear policies, effective oversight and careful checking will mean businesses are better placed to benefit from the technology while avoiding unnecessary risk. www.stevensdrake.com

From the Classroom to ... How Education and Industry Are Building Surrey's Future Workforce
Swapping textbooks for tool belts, nearly 40 Year 10 students from six schools across Surrey recently traded the classroom for a week of hands-on property development and construction, in a pioneering work experience course created by Wates and hosted in partnership with Nescot in Epsom. Aged just 14 and 15, the students spent the week exploring careers in construction and property, drawing up plans for a housing development and pitching their ideas to industry professionals. They stepped inside a live Wates Residential construction site using Nescot's immersive virtual reality pod, tried operating heavy machinery using advanced construction simulators, practised carpentry, and built teamwork and problem-solving skills at an outdoor activity centre. For members of Gatwick Diamond Business, the scheme is a timely reminder of just how powerful this kind of employer engagement can be, and how much untapped opportunity exists across our region's businesses to do the same. The scheme, running since 2017, was run by development, building and property maintenance company Wates Group, part funded by Surrey County Council and delivered in partnership with Nescot, Neilcott Construction, community interest company LMP Action and social enterprise Serious About Youth. It's a strong example of employers, education providers, community organisations and local government working together to give young people modern, meaningful work experience. The results speak for themselves. Following last year's programme, 90% of participants reported a stronger understanding of career opportunities in construction, 85% said the industry sounded exciting,
22
and 72% felt their employability skills had improved. Julie Kapsalis MBE, CEO and Principal at Nescot, said “This scheme is incredible, bringing together industry experts and our state-of-theart learning facilities to inspire young people who are often right at the beginning of thinking about a potential career. "I’m proud of what they achieved, and I hope they will go forward with new confidence as they consider their options for the future.” Commenting on the success of the programme this year Su Pickerill, Head of Social Value at Wates Group, said:
Diamond Magazine
the Construction Site “The summer programme is a great example of how we aim to be brilliant locally, working alongside our communities to create opportunities that truly make a difference. "It’s been inspiring to see young people step beyond their comfort zones, and I hope this experience has helped unlock their potential.” Many students attending were surprised about the amount of different roles involved in the sector. One said “I wanted to go into a construction job and it’s made me feel I know more, it’s also shocked me about the number of jobs there are.” Programmes like this sit at the heart of a bigger national shift. The Government has set out an ambition to guarantee every young person 10 days' worth of meaningful workplace experience during secondary school, moving away from the traditional block placement towards something more flexible: a two-hour tour, a one-day project or a short group placement can all count, provided the experience is genuinely meaningful. Matt Furniss, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic
Growth, said: “This investment highlights the opportunities available in one of Surrey’s growing sectors and demonstrates Surrey’s commitment to innovative pathways into further education and employment. "By working in partnership with employers, training providers and colleges, we can help more young people develop the skills they need, support business growth, and create positive outcomes for Surrey’s economy while ensuring no one is left behind.” For employers, getting involved isn't just about giving back. It's a chance to invest in a future workforce, strengthen local talent pipelines and showcase your sector to the next generation, while raising your profile and building pride across your existing teams.
Get Involved: Nescot Wants to Hear From You Nescot is keen to build on the success of this year's scheme and is actively looking for more Gatwick Diamond Business members to get involved in delivering work experience opportunities. Whether it's hosting a site visit, running a taster session, offering a short project, or providing a full placement, your business could be the spark that helps a young person see a future they hadn't previously considered. Nescot offers courses across a wide range of sectors, including Construction, Business, Motor Vehicle, Animal Care, Hair & Beauty, Computing and IT, Performing Arts, Childcare and Health & Social Care. If your business would like to explore showcasing your sector to young people through workplace experiences, get in touch with Nescot's Partnerships team on 020 8394 1731 (option 5), or email partnerships@nescot.ac.uk. Celebrating 25 Years of Changing Young Lives This year marks a very special milestone for Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity as we celebrate 25 years of supporting young children with complex needs and their families across the South East. Our story began in 2000, when the late Dame Vera Lynn
launched the Bluebird Appeal after Scope announced plans to close its School for Parents network, which provided vital early intervention for pre-school children with cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions. Dame Vera and her supporters raised awareness and funds, helping to save this important service. In 2001, Dame Vera and Scope launched the Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy, continuing this work. In 2016, the charity became fully independent and began delivering its services directly to families. Since then, the charity has grown significantly. In 2017, just two families had access to our services. Today, we support over 100 families every week, providing specialist early intervention for children under five with cerebral palsy, chromosome abnormalities, rare genetic disorders and other motor learning impairments. Our services include physiotherapy and conductive education, speech and language therapy, swimming, rebound, music therapy and outreach support, working closely with parents
and carers to help children develop vital skills, confidence and independence. In 2024, we moved to our new home in Chailey, providing greater space and exciting opportunities to expand our services and reach more children. As we celebrate 25 years, we are not only looking back at our incredible history but looking ahead to the future. As part of our 25th anniversary campaign, we aim to support 25 more children this year. It costs around £7,000 to support one child for a year. With no statutory funding, we rely on our community, corporate partners, grant funders and supporters to keep our services free for families. After 25 years of changing young lives, our mission remains unchanged: to give every child the strongest possible start and help families build brighter futures together. Stop Hoping for New Business. Start Building a System for It. Most B2B companies know they should be doing more outbound prospecting. The problem isn't strategy. It's execution.
The result is a pipeline that's inconsistent at best and empty at worst. The mistake most companies make
Prospecting gets deprioritised. Staff find reasons to avoid it. And before long, the business is running on a hope strategy: waiting for referrals, warm inbound, or whoever on the team is feeling motivated enough to pick up the phone this week.
When things get quiet, the instinct is to hire a business development rep and hope they figure it out. But hiring into a broken or non-existent process rarely works. Six months later, results are patchy, the hire is frustrated, and nobody's sure whether the problem was the person or the approach. Before you hire, build the system. Know what messaging works. Know what activity levels generate results. Know what your pipeline looks like when the process is actually running.
A better approach At DigiSpark, we build and run client acquisition systems for B2B companies. We develop the offer, build the outreach process, make the calls, book the appointments, and generate pipeline while proving what works. When you're ready to scale, we help you do it in whatever way makes commercial sense. That might mean bringing someone in-house or finding a dedicated freelance rep. Either way, we don't just hand it over and disappear. We can continue making calls alongside your team, join weekly sales huddles, and make sure activity stays at the right level. We also handle the time-consuming side of prospecting, data sourcing, sequencing, and follow-up automation, so your BD people can focus on conversations rather than admin. 5 Data Security Risks SMB Leaders Can’t Afford to Ignore in 2026 Data is at the heart of every modern business, from customer records and financial information to internal communications and intellectual property.Yet as organisations embrace cloud technology, remote working and AI-powered tools, the risks facing that data continue to grow. For businesses across the South East, cyber security is no longer just an IT issue – it is a business-critical priority. One of the biggest risks is human error. Simple mistakes, such as sharing files with the wrong recipient or granting excessive access permissions, can expose sensitive information. Making secure practices the default, supported by regular staff training, can significantly reduce this risk.
Many growing businesses also face challenges around access controls. Employees often retain access to systems and data long after their roles change. Regular permission reviews and stronger password management help limit potential exposure. As more organisations move services to the cloud, misconfigured systems are becoming increasingly common. Overly permissive sharing settings, unsecured storage and unmanaged third-party applications can all create vulnerabilities if left unchecked.
Finally, insider risks. Businesses need visibility over how data is being accessed and shared, while ensuring that leavers’ accounts and permissions are promptly removed. The good news is that by focusing on people, processes and technology, businesses can strengthen their resilience, protect customer trust and support sustainable growth in an increasingly digital world. www.extechcloud.com
Phishing attacks remain another major threat. Cyber criminals are increasingly using convincing emails, messages and phone calls to impersonate trusted contacts and steal credentials. Multi-factor authentication, staff awareness training and strong email security measures are essential safeguards.

Gatwick Diamond Business gdb Diamond Leaders for Growth programme returns. New & improved!
Build a Business That Works Without You. gdb Diamond Leaders is designed for SME Owners who are done with being the bottleneck. Fix four patterns. Get more profit, more freedom, and a business that's worth more. 6 Months | Structured learning |“Hot Seat” Peer Advisory Group | Private mentoring|Exclusive to gdb members
Busier and worth less, or less busy and worth more? Every SME Owner is heading one of these two ways with their business. The difference is NOT effort. It is fixing four patterns. You've probably tried a new hire, a course, or a consultant. It may have worked for a while, then you reverted back to your ‘normal’. Learn why that happened, how to stop it happening again, and crack the code to build a business that works without you. WHERE IT GETS MORE BUSY AND WORTH LESS
WHERE IT GETS LESS BUSY AND WORTH MORE
No clear direction, so everything is reaction
→
Direction that holds when you're not in the room
Held together by people, not systems
→
Systems that carry the load instead of your memory
Every decision defaults back to you
→
Decisions made properly without you
Results only hold while you're pushing
→
Performance that continues when you stop
Fix these four patterns and the business gets easier to run without you, and more valuable to a future buyer. High owner dependency is the number one deal killer when owners try to sell. Buyers see it as a huge risk, then heavily discount their offer, or often just walk away. If you're not looking to sell just yet, why not enjoy more freedom and higher profits in the meantime? WHAT YOU GET IN THE PROGRAMME
IT WON’T GET BETTER BY JUST WORKING HARDER. IT GETS WORSE
✓
6 half-day sessions, monthly. Capped at 8 to 10 gdb members, matched so no competitor shares your room.
✓
Relevant theory that earns its place. Practical frameworks and tools you can use on Monday, not business-school abstraction.
✓
Peer-to-peer ‘Hot Seats’, monthly. Bring the real problem. The room works it properly, with structured challenge rather than polite agreement.
Growth stalls at the ceiling of one person's decision-making bandwidth. Margins thin as headcount rises without systems to carry the load: more people, the same bottleneck, just a bigger wage bill. Good hires leave because they never felt genuinely trusted, and it gets read as proof that delegation doesn't work here, rather than proof that the structure underneath it was never built.
✓
✓ ✓
Top specialist advice from experienced gdb members. Owners who have already solved what you're facing. The bit you can't buy anywhere else.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF… ✓
You turn over £500k to £5m and have a team around you
✓
You've tried a hire, a course or a consultant and it didn't stick
✓
Growth now costs you more hours, not fewer
Private 1:1 mentoring, bi-monthly. Three one-hour calls translating the group's thinking into your business, in confidence.
IT ISN'T FOR YOU IF… ✗
You're pre-team and under £500k. This isn't your problem yet
Accountability that sticks. Every session opens on last month's commitments. Momentum, not six one-off days.
✗
You haven't tried to change anything and aren't sure you want to
✗
You want a course to half-watch, not a room that expects you
Founding Cohort Pricing: £3,000 + VAT per seat 8 to 10 seats only, matched and non-competing • 6 month programme You get 30 hours of expert-facilitated time: 6 half-day sessions and 3 bi-monthly private one-hour mentoring calls. MHA expands in the Gatwick Diamond with new Crawley base and plans for growth Commerce. Leaders believe Crawley’s position as an international business hub makes it a natural base for further expansion. David Boosey, partner at MHA, said: “The move reflects MHA’s view that businesses in the South East benefit from working with a dedicated local advisory team that builds longterm relationships and works collaboratively to achieve their goals.
National accountancy and advisory firm, MHA, the UK member firm of Baker Tilly International, has moved into Crawley as part of a wider investment in the Gatwick Diamond, creating a platform for growth following its IPO and increasing demand for its services across the South East. The AIM-listed firm has relocated from its current office in Reigate to Global House on Crawley High Street, placing its Gatwick team at the heart of the Gatwick Diamond. The move will support the continued growth of MHA’s Gatwick team, with plans to significantly expand headcount as demand increases for its audit, tax, advisory and outsourcing services. The move underlines the firm’s commitment to providing businesses across the Gatwick region with local access to the full scope of MHA’s national expertise and Baker Tilly International’s global network. MHA is a member of Gatwick Diamond Business and the Surrey Chambers of

MHA’s new Gatwick office includes a modern, open-plan working environment alongside meeting and collaboration spaces for clients and colleagues. The firm was recently recognised in the top 100 of the FT’s UK’s Best Employers 2026 and also achieved the Investors in People Gold Award in 2025 for the second time, which enables the firm to attract the very best talent to support its clients.
“With London Gatwick Airport, rail and road links, a resilient business base, talented workforce and strong education providers, Crawley is an ideal base for our long-term expansion plans. “Our successful IPO last April has helped accelerate our growth and the success of our Reigate office has shown there is strong demand in this region for a full-service accountancy and advisory firm that combines local relationships with national and international reach. This move gives us the platform to grow our team, create jobs and support more businesses in this important region.” The wider Gatwick region generated a GVA of £165 billion in 2023, according to business partnership, Gatwick Diamond Business. It is home to a diverse mix of ambitious and fastgrowing companies particularly across sectors such as aviation, logistics, technology and advanced manufacturing. These businesses include global multinationals such as Elekta, Thales,Virgin Holidays and London Gatwick Airport.
David added: “While technology and AI are transforming the way we work, they don’t replace the value of trusted relationships. Being on the ground allows us to work closely with clients, understand their businesses and support their ambitions in a way that simply can’t be delivered remotely. “The South East and its businesses deserve the very best service, and our growing team and location helps us to continue to deliver that.” www.mha.co.uk

Follow through and revisit decisions collectively.
.You find you’re talking about the same issues each meeting, there’s no ownership of actions and decisions you thought had been agreed upon are overturned at a later date.
For this to work, you need an agenda that’s not overpacked, a chair or facilitator who can draw out contributions and check for consensus as you move along, and a system for tracking agreements and actions and ensuring they are followed through.
The result? Slow decision-making, a lack of collaboration, miscommunication, and ultimately low team productivity.

Are You Losing the Sale in the First Three Minutes? The first three minutes of a sales conversation often determine whether the buyer engages or begins looking for a reason to leave. Many salespeople focus so heavily on what they want to say that they forget what the buyer needs to feel. If the opening sounds rehearsed, generic or pressured, trust can disappear before the real conversation has begun.
Start by explaining the purpose clearly: “Thanks for your time today. I’d like to understand the challenges you’re facing, what you want to achieve and whether I may be able to help.” This gives the conversation direction without making assumptions or forcing an outcome. Preparation also matters. A question such as, “Tell me about your business,” can suggest that little thought has taken place beforehand. Refer instead to something relevant you have noticed about the business, its market or its current priorities. This shows genuine interest and helps the buyer feel that the conversation is about them.
Then ask a question that gives the buyer a meaningful role in shaping the discussion: “What would make this conversation valuable for you today?” A professional services client I worked with introduced these three changes after finding that prospects were polite but rarely progressed. His calls became more natural, buyers shared more openly and his follow-up conversion improved significantly. Why Joined-Up Fire Safety and Health & Safety Matter Fire safety and health and safety duties are often managed separately, yet in practice they are connected. Emergency arrangements, workplace layouts, hazardous substances, equipment, training, contractor control and the needs of vulnerable people can all affect both areas. A joined-up approach helps organisations see the risk picture rather than treating each requirement in isolation. For businesses across the Gatwick Diamond and beyond, closer coordination between specialists can make advice clearer and more consistent. It can also help identify gaps, avoid duplicated assessments and ensure that recommendations made in one area do not unintentionally conflict with controls in another. Each specialist retains responsibility for their own discipline while sharing information and considering how their findings interact. H&S Secure and ERMCO remain independent businesses but are working collaboratively to encourage this coordinated approach. The relationship developed after Chris Wrapson met Lee Walton at a Gatwick Diamond Business membership meeting. www.gatwickdiamondbusiness.com
Chris explains: “We quickly discovered that we share a strong focus on providing customers with the right advice, together with similar core values and ideas about how best to support businesses. Working collaboratively felt like a natural next step.”
how risks overlap. When fire safety and health and safety arrangements support one another, businesses are better placed to protect people, meet their responsibilities and make decisions.
Lee highlights the value of specialists concentrating on their respective strengths: “Rather than trying to be specialists in everything, each company can focus on what it does best.” He adds that closer coordination can help reduce “gaps, duplication and potential inconsistencies” between fire safety and health and safety arrangements.

Ultimately, joining up these disciplines is not about combining them into a single service or replacing specialist judgement. It is about better communication, appropriate referrals and a shared understanding of

Pentagon implements structured Environmental Management System with a view to attain ISO14001 Throughout the first half of the year, Pentagon has invested significant time, resources, and financial commitment into developing and implementing a bespoke Environmental Management System (EMS), with specialist support from fellow Gatwick Diamond Business member Eshcon Environmental Consultants. The EMS covers the entire Pentagon Group, including Pentagon Plastics Ltd and Pentagon Tooling Ltd at their neighbouring Horsham sites. The project was driven by increasing
customer demand for ISO 14001 certification and a growing emphasis on environmental responsibility across the manufacturing sector. Working closely with Eshcon, Pentagon undertook a comprehensive review of its operations, including manufacturing processes, legislative compliance, historical environmental records, energy performance, and the creation of a detailed Environmental Aspects and Impacts Register. This register now forms the foundation of the company's programme of continual environmental improvement. An Environmental Management Committee was established, bringing together Directors, Managers, Team Leaders, Engineers, and Manufacturing Operatives. Representing all areas of the business, the committee promotes collaboration and shared responsibility for environmental performance. As part of the project, Pentagon also strengthened its Environmental Policy, reinforcing its commitment to reducing environmental impact and demonstrating this commitment to customers, employees, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
The EMS has now been operating successfully across the business for several months. Following its first internal audit in June, opportunities for further improvement have already been identified ahead of the external ISO 14001 certification audit later this year. An upcoming Management Review Meeting will establish key environmental objectives and performance indicators, with an initial focus on reducing electricity consumption, setting carbon reduction targets, and improving waste management. Progress will be monitored by both the Environmental Management Committee and Senior Management Team to drive continual improvement. The implementation of the EMS marks a major milestone in Pentagon's sustainability journey, demonstrating its long-term commitment to environmental responsibility, operational excellence, and meeting the evolving expectations of customers and stakeholders while creating a greener future for the business. www.pentagonplastics.co.uk
Why Standardisation Is the Foundation of Quality Training When organisations deliver training across multiple sites, regions or even countries, consistency becomes more than a desirable quality. It becomes a critical business requirement. Employers need the confidence that every member of staff will receive the same high standard of instruction, assessment and support, regardless of location or which trainer is leading the course. At Procom Training, that consistency is not left to chance. It is carefully maintained through a robust programme of instructor standardisation, ensuring that every learner benefits from a professional, fair and engaging experience. Regular standardisation meetings bring a team of instructors together to review performance, discuss industry developments, share best practice and align training delivery methods. These sessions provide an important opportunity to strengthen quality assurance, refine
30
assessment standards and ensure that every trainer remains up to date with both client expectations and regulatory requirements. It is important to understand the importance of delivering a uniform training experience at scale. While every instructor brings their own professional background, industry expertise and personal style to the classroom, the core elements of training delivery must remain the same.
In sectors where compliance, safety and operational excellence are paramount, that level of reliability is invaluable. It helps businesses demonstrate competency, maintain regulatory standards and build confidence within their workforce. The company believes that this commitment to standardisation has been one of the key drivers behind its long-term success and reputation within the workplace training sector. Procom Training supports thousands of learners each year, the business has built its reputation on delivering training that is not only compliant and effective, but also consistent across every client location. www.procomtraining.co.uk

Talking Shop Every time you prepare for and stand up to present or speak, four speeches happen: •
The one you practised,
The fact these four speeches misalign isn’t a failing though, they're four different sources of information about where you are as a communicator and where you're heading next.
•
The one you actually gave
Let me explain:
•
The one your audience heard
•
The speech you practised tells you what you believe is worth saying.
•
and the one you wished you'd given. •
The speech you gave shows you who you become when the room takes over and your plan meets reality.
•
The speech your audience heard reminds you that they bring their own unpredictable humanity into the room, and your job is to connect with that rather than override it.
Many subject experts who speak or present regularly spend time trying to force these into alignment, chasing consistency and polish until the gaps between them disappear (I know I have).
• But honestly the gap never really disappears. It just changes shape, which is good as the feedback is invaluable.
And lastly the speech you wished you'd given is internal feedback. It deserves to be recorded or written down, because that post-talk inner voice often holds the key to improvement. (As long as you listen to it objectively rather than let it beat you up!)
The speakers who grow aren't necessarily the most naturally gifted. They're the ones who stay curious about these gaps. So, if you've presented recently and felt like something wasn't quite right, take that as a sign that you're paying attention rather than proof you're not cut out for this.
Your next great speech will be built from the difference between your last one. My advice, stop chasing after perfect and start getting curious about where that difference lives, because that's exactly where the growth is. Andrew Dowsett is a communication coach and keynote speaker working with leaders, teams and organisations on the art of speaking well. Find out more at www.rhabdomancy.co.uk
Making the Four-Day Week Work For SFA, the answer has been yes. Now in its third year of the model, the business has used the shorter week to support work-life balance and improve mental health by giving staff more time to rest, recover and manage life beyond work. That matters because SFA is not a desk-based business. Based in Bognor Regis and working across the South, it installs and maintains fire protection and electronic security systems where trust, technical competence and response matter every day.
A four-day week sounds simple until the phone rings on the day everyone is meant to be off. In fire and security, flexibility is only meaningful if reliability holds. That is what makes SFA Fire & Security’s four-day week more than a workplace perk. It asks a harder question: can a modern employer look after its people and still deliver when clients need them most?
This is the sort of sector where a four-day week can look unrealistic. Engineers still need to be on site, systems still need testing, and urgent calls do not fit neatly around a long weekend. SFA chose to test the idea properly. Cover, client expectations and staff capacity were worked through before the shorter week became routine. It was forward-thinking, but not reckless - the kind of progress that only works when the service remains trusted.
On-call cover for anything urgent, even with the whole team off together Cutting hours properly, rather than squeezing five days into four Treating it as a genuine trial with a proper review point For SFA, the benefits have been practical as well as human: stronger retention, better worklife balance, clearer mental health benefits for staff, and a stronger point of difference when recruiting engineers. A shorter week and round-the-clock reliability should be difficult to balance. SFA’s third year suggests it can be done. More importantly, it shows a business confident enough to change, careful enough to plan, and trusted enough to keep protecting people, premises and critical systems. www.sfa-uk.com

Every business owner has a growth plan. But do you have a plan B? "Every business is different, which is why financial planning should be tailored to your objectives."
Most business owners spend years planning for growth, investing in their people and building long-term value. But while many have a clear strategy for success, fewer have considered what would happen if illness, injury or another unexpected event suddenly took them away from the business.
Every business is different, which is why financial planning should be tailored to your objectives. Benchmark Financial Planning works with business owners to help protect their business, support their employees and plan for the future. Areas we can help with include:
Business protection, employee benefits and financial planning can all play an important role in helping businesses prepare for the unexpected. Protecting the business For many SMEs, the owner or leadership team is central to the success of the business. If a key individual is unable to work, the impact can extend far beyond lost income. Client relationships, decision-making and day-to-day operations can all be affected. Taking steps to protect key people and plan for business continuity can help provide greater resilience when challenges arise. Protecting your people
Katharine Davis Attracting and retaining talented employees remains a challenge for businesses of all sizes. Today's workforce increasingly values support for their wellbeing, financial security and future goals. Benefits such as workplace pensions, employee wellbeing initiatives and financial education can help create a more engaged workforce while demonstrating a long-term commitment to your people. Protecting your future Business success should support personal ambitions too. Whether your goal is continued growth, succession planning, retirement or creating a legacy for future generations, financial planning can help align your business objectives with your long-term goals. Taking time to review your plans today can help provide greater confidence in the future.

Why partnership is the Gatwick Diamond's most valuable export There is a temptation, in economic development circles, to think of inward investment as a numbers game: how many pounds landed, how many jobs created, how many square feet of new floorspace signed off. Those figures matter enormously. But the real engine behind sustained inward investment is something less easily measured - relationships. Framework agreements, trade delegations, and long-term regional partnerships are not addons to an investment strategy. They are the strategy. That belief was on full display last month, when we welcomed Malaysia's first-ever official state delegation to the Gatwick Diamond. Led by Selangor Chief Minister YAB Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari, the visit to Crawley Innovation Centre brought together more than 50 business leaders and public officials from both regions and resulted in a new framework agreement between Invest Gatwick Diamond and Invest Selangor. It wasn't a ceremonial gesture. It set out shared ground for collaboration across aerospace, advanced manufacturing, digital technology, logistics, skills development and sustainable aviation - sectors where both regions already have real strength and even more room to grow together. That matters because the Gatwick Diamond isn't short of a case to make on paper. Our region is home to 45,000 businesses and around 500 international companies, generating a GVA of £41.1 billion. The airport economy alone contributes more than £4 billion to the region every year. We sit within the wider Gatwick Airport Economic Zone - 5.3 million residents, 3.2 million working-age people, roughly 2.7 million jobs supported, and an economy worth over £160 billion annually.
www.gatwickdiamondbusiness.com
Few regions in the UK can offer that scale of connectivity within an hour of London, anchored by the country's second-busiest airport and three universities producing the skilled graduates growing businesses need. But numbers alone don't build trust, and trust is what gets a Malaysian aerospace supplier or a Chinese advanced-manufacturing firm to actually pick up the phone. That's the piece a framework agreement provides: a direct, accountable line between two investment agencies who have shaken hands, sat in the same room, and agreed to actively make introductions rather than simply publish a prospectus and wait. It's the difference between being one of dozens of regions competing for attention on a website and being the region a delegation already has a relationship with. The timing with Selangor is no accident either. London Gatwick's new four-times-weekly service to Kuala Lumpur gives that relationship physical infrastructure to grow into - direct connectivity that turns a framework agreement into genuinely practical routes for businesses on both sides. And Selangor won't be the last. This September, we're pleased to welcome a delegation from Shandong, China, continuing a pattern we're determined to build into something structural rather than sporadic.
First Selangor. Now Shandong. That is the context that matters here: not a single flagship visit, but the start of a deliberate programme of regional partnerships that gives the Gatwick Diamond standing relationships with fastgrowing economies across Asia, each one opening a distinct door - into Southeast Asian aerospace and advanced manufacturing supply chains through Selangor, and into one of China's most significant industrial and trading provinces through Shandong. None of this replaces the fundamentals. Businesses will always look hardest at skills, infrastructure, connectivity and cost. But in a world where regions across the UK and Europe are all making broadly similar pitches, partnership is what turns interest into investment. It's what gets a company past the prospectus and into a conversation with someone who already knows the market, already has contacts on the ground, and is already invested in their success. We want businesses in the Gatwick Diamond to have practical routes into Southeast Asia and into China. We want it to be easier, not harder, for Malaysian and Chinese companies to explore what our region offers. And as this September's visit from Shandong will show, we intend to keep building the relationships that make that possible - one agreement, one delegation, one connection at a time.
