Why you should stop using your kids’ names, your football team, or ‘1234’ as your password
The problem? Cybercriminals love that approach
‘123456’ is still one of the UK’s mostused passwords. Hackers can crack it, or any password based on common names, dates or football teams, in less than a second And if you’re reusing that same login across accounts? You’ve just handed them the keys to the lot
That’s why strong, unique passwords matter. And no, that doesn’t mean you need to memorise 57 random strings of nonsense
Here’s a better way:
Use a password manager to generate and store strong passwords for every account
Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible
Don’t share your passwords with colleagues (or your pets)
Avoid personal info, if it’s on Facebook, it’s guessable
Think of your password like a toothbrush: don’t share it, change it often, and definitely don’t use the same one for everything.
Cyber threats are getting smarter, but your first line of defence is still in your hands, or rather, at your fingertips Need help rolling out password managers or MFA across your team? We’ll help you do it properly, with minimal fuss and no eye rolls from staff

are three changes worth knowing about:
Google Discover Gets Smarter
Recent refinements to Google Discover appear to favour fresher, locally relevant and authority-led content Discover can drive strong mobile visibility without traditional keyword ranking, but it is less predictable than standard search. Businesses publishing consistent, highquality updates, particularly with strong local signals and genuine expertise, may see improved exposure Generic or sporadic content is becoming easier to overlook.
Rising Bot Traffic Problems
Industry reports highlight increasing volumes of non-human traffic affecting campaign data Inflated impressions and misleading engagement metrics can distort performance reporting and create false confidence For businesses running
running paid campaigns, accurate conversion tracking and regular data reviews are no longer optional extras, they are essential safeguards
AI Driving Platform Change
Competition around generative AI tools continues to intensify, particularly among major platforms such as Google and TikTok Platform AI increasingly determines what content is surfaced, how ads are delivered and how performance is measured. Adaptability is now part of digital strategy, not an afterthought
The landscape will keep shifting, but the fundamentals remain reassuringly consistent: quality content, clean data and informed decisions. We’ll continue watching the updates, decoding the jargon and translating digital change into practical action, so you can focus on running and growing your business www.digibubble.co.uk

Nothing Is Broken — But Is Your Website Pulling Its Weight?
For many established businesses, the website sits in an awkward middle ground
It works It’s online Enquiries come in Nothing is obviously ‘wrong’
And yet, quietly, the website may no longer be doing what it should: supporting marketing activity, reinforcing credibility, and coping reliably as the business grows
Hosting is rarely reviewed once a site is live. In many cases, it was chosen years ago, bundled with an agency contract, or selected simply because it was “good enough at the time” The challenge is that businesses evolve, while hosting often doesn’t
The real cost of underperforming hosting isn’t dramatic downtime It’s friction
gdb Re-Energise Conference 2026
The room was buzzing and full of positivity as gdb’s Re-Energise Conference returned to Stanhill Court on the 22nd January. With a packed audience and a dynamic lineup of speakers, the event set the tone for an inspiring and forward-thinking year ahead.
John Young, former BBC Southeast Today presenter and reporter, once again brought his signature professionalism and warmth as our Compere. Our guest speakers each offered unique insights, leaving attendees motivated and ready to take on 2026.
Kicking things off, Nicky McCrudden delivered an inspiring session on how compassionate and kind communication can serve as a powerful business differentiator, particularly in an increasingly AI focused world Nicky kept us all on our toes, with a cameo from ‘The Lloyd-erminator’!
Next, Matt Turner MBE took us on an honest and hilarious journey through the highs and lows of his entrepreneurship From starting Creative Pod in 2006 all the way up to receiving his recent MBE, sharing top tips and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
Camron and Team Malik shared their powerful family story of resilience, unity and success following the tragic loss of Sumner And how their journey in squash is heading towards a hopeful Olympic feature when the sport makes it’s debut in LA 2028 – truly inspiring
Closing the speaker lineup, Mo Kanjilal, left us with lots to reflect on as she explored how re-energising workplace culture and leading differently can help create environments where people can openly contribute, belong and genuinely thrive
Our speaker sessions were followed by a Q&A session that sparked insightful questions and conversations that continued well into lunch.
It was fantastic to return to Stanhill Court and kick off the year with such positivity. A huge thank you to our AV Supplier Avensys, our Event Sponsors: Carnegie Group, and Reigate & Banstead Borough Council and of course to our Headline Sponsor, Richard Place Dobson, for making this event possible
This is not a new phenomenon! In the 1960s, Lynden B. Johnson had an apparent love of the telephone and in one story, a diplomat was in a face-toface meeting with the president Since they were continually interrupted by phone calls, the diplomat went into another room and called the president instead… and had his complete attention!
The growing variety of communication channels can make things more challenging and can mean ten different ways to get ghosted! However, it seems to me that if you take the trouble to find the right media, you have a better chance of communicating

A Stronger Voice for the Southeast: New APPG for the Gatwick Diamond Launches in Parliament
A Milestone Moment for the Region
The Southeast’s economic ambitions took centre stage in Parliament this month with the launch of the AllParty Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Southeast and Gatwick Diamond Growth Gateway The event brought together parliamentarians, regional leaders, universities, and business representatives for an evening that was both celebratory and forward-looking
“Our region deserves a stronger, more consistent voice in Parliament.” — Mims Davies MP
Hosted by Mims Davies MP and Natasha Irons MP, the APPG marks a new chapter for a region whose voice despite its economic weight has often been fragmented or overlooked at national level The new group aims to change that, establishing a consistent, collaborative platform to champion the needs and potential of the Southeast and the Gatwick Diamond
The momentum behind the Westminster APPG launch began months earlier, with a gdb board decision to drive the APPG initiative forward on behalf of its membership and the wider South East The parliamentary event was the tangible result of the gdb board’s early commitment
“This APPG gives us the platform we need to secure the investment, infrastructure and skills that will unlock even greater opportunity.”
— Mims Davies MP
Championing Cross Party Collaboration
True to its purpose, the launch was unmistakably cross party and cross sector Natasha Irons MP for Croydon East, who co chairs the group, spoke passionately about the APPG’s mission to ensure fair and sustainable growth across the region
Irons described the Southeast as a national economic asset an engine of skills, connectivity, culture and commerce Yet, she noted, its contributions often outpace the level of attention or investment it receives The APPG aims to change that narrative by bringing local voices into Westminster more effectively and more consistently.
This sentiment was echoed across the room, which included representatives from local authorities, colleges, universities, and major employers alongside the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Richard Holden MP Transport, unsurprisingly, proved a unifying theme Improved mobility, Davies emphasised, sits at the heart of a more prosperous future for local communities and businesses
Unlocking Opportunity for a New Generation
Throughout the event, Davies returned to the central idea that the success of the Southeast must be measured not just in economic output, but in the opportunities it creates for young people The presence of the region’s universities and colleges was a reminder of the strong educational infrastructure already in place and of the need to connect skills to industry at a deeper level
Investment, infrastructure, and skills are the pillars on which the APPG intends to build The ultimate goal: to ensure the region becomes, in Davies’ words, “a world class economic powerhouse”.
A Call for Partners
The co-chairs concluded the evening by encouraging businesses, community organisations, and regional stakeholders to partner with the new APPG. With future events and evidence sessions planned, the group is positioning itself as an ongoing hub for collaboration
Organisers invited interested parties to contact Brett North brett north@gatwickdiamond co uk for partnership opportunities.
As guests left Parliament, the atmosphere was unmistakably one of momentum an enthusiastic start for a group poised to shape the next chapter of growth, representation, and ambition for the Southeast and the Gatwick Diamond

Employee Ownership Trusts: Why The Smartest Exits Are No Longer About The Exits
trust Trade sales and private equity can deliver cash certainty, yet sometimes at the cost of culture, people and long-term independence
An EOT transfers ownership to a trust that exists solely for the benefit of employees Founders choose this route to protect their legacy, reward the people who created the value, and step back gradually rather than disappear overnight
Crucially, EOTs are not discounted exits Transactions must take place at full market value, supported by an independent, arm’s-length valuation. Funding is typically structured through deferred consideration, sometimes alongside modest bank debt, repaid from future profits over five to eight years This creates powerful alignment: employees become long-term stewards

Why Digital Transformation Stalls — And How to Get Real Value from It
Digital transformation should make organisations faster, smarter and more competitive. For many growing businesses across the Gatwick Diamond region, however, it becomes a source of frustration rather than advantage
New systems are launched Platforms are rolled out. Processes are redesigned. Yet months later, leaders find teams still relying on spreadsheets, creating workarounds, or using only a fraction of the system’s capability The expected return on investment feels elusive
The issue is rarely the technology itself
In my experience working with organisations across energy, healthcare and local government, digital transformation stalls when the people
Uzma Aitqad
people side of change is underestimated Communication is unclear Ownership is fragmented Teams feel overwhelmed by “yet another initiative.” Leaders assume that once the system is live, the job is done
But go-live is not the finish line it is the starting point
Digital transformation succeeds when leaders are visible and aligned, when employees understand the why behind the change, and when organisations actively support adoption beyond initial training Real value is realised when behaviour changes not simply when software is installed.
For SMEs in particular, where resources are tight and every investment must count, adoption is not optional; it is the difference between cost and value.
Technology enables transformation People deliver it www magnapeoplechange com

Award winners – maximising the opportunity
If you find yourself the lucky recipient of a business award, don’t let all that time, effort and opportunity go to waste by letting the moment pass you by. Instead, go all out to promote it!
After you win an award, you naturally have a limited time window to proudly celebrate the victory and share with the world that you came out on top Leave it too late, and the news will feel old. So, strike while the iron’s hot!
Three top tips for promoting your award win:
1. Use your owned channels Owned channels are platforms that you have full control over, eg your website, socials, blog, newsletter, email signatures, and so on Proudly brandish your winner’s badge, show photos of the night and explain why you won and what this means to you as a company e
those you don t control the content of but could still harness to spread the word These include sector press and local media. Issue a press release but make
make it interesting ‘Company wins award’ on its own isn’t a story but if you package it with a more enticing message, such as what you won for or your journey from unknowns to award winners, then you could have a mediafriendly story on your hands
3. Think of partners Which companies do you partner with who might share your blog, engage with your socials or include in their newsletters?
Brainstorm suppliers, referrers, advisers – everyone in your network who could help share your great news while it’s timely

Climbing to the Top: From Senior Executive to Managing Director in Under a Decade
Sarah Lyons
In June 2017, Sarah Lyons joined Creative Pod as a Senior Marketing Executive Now nearly 10 years later, she is stepping into the role of Managing Director, an achievement that speaks not only to her ambition but to sustained impact and growth.
Her journey is one of consistent progression and continuous improvement: introducing smarter processes, scaling the marketing and design departments, and shaping longterm strategy to steer the business through key phases of growth Now, as the agency celebrates its 20th year, she is taking on this pivotal role at a defining moment: balancing the demands of new motherhood with the responsibility of guiding the business into its next chapter
Sarah Lyons commented: “I’m incredibly proud to be stepping into the MD role at Creative Pod, a business that has shaped so much of my career and life. Becoming a new mum while also taking on this next chapter feels a little surreal Both roles demand heart, resilience and big-picture thinking, and I am excited to bring all of that to drive the agency forward while showing my daughter what it means to be a leadership. We have an amazing team,
working mum and a woman in leadership We have an amazing team, a brilliant culture and ambitious plans, and I cannot wait to see what we achieve together.”
Sarah made history as Creative Pod’s first-ever female Director when she was promoted to Marketing Director in 2022 Alongside this, in 2023, she was named ‘Employee of the Year’ at the gdb Awards and was also recognised as a finalist for ‘Businesswoman of the Year’ at the Dynamic Awards
Matt Turner MBE commented: “Seeing Sarah rise to the MD role is something I'm extremely proud of. It’s a true testament to her hard work, determination and loyalty I’m really looking forward to seeing how Sarah takes the business to the next level ”

The Hidden Value in Your Walls: Why
Strategic Asset of 2026
For decades, the default response to cold buildings was simple: turn the heating up. Today, that logic no longer holds The focus has shifted from warming the air to improving the building itself Welcome to the era of retrofit, where upgrading a property’s fabric is a strategic decision, not a cosmetic one.
For Sussex, with its extensive stock of period and traditionally constructed opportunity
buildings, this shift presents both an opportunity and a challenge Owners must improve thermal performance without undermining character or long-term durability A fabric-first approach consistently delivers the strongest return on investment.
Most heat loss occurs through predictable weak points Uninsulated lofts, suspended timber floors, and poorly detailed junctions allow warmth to escape and energy costs to rise. When specified correctly, modern breathable insulation can dramatically improve comfort while respecting the way older buildings were designed to perform
However, insulation by itself does not provide a solution. Thermal upgrades must be paired with controlled ventilation Sealing a building without managing airflow risks creating a “wet replace
box”, where condensation and mould replace draughts as the primary problem Successful retrofit is about balance, not overcorrection
This is why jumping straight to renewable technologies can be a costly misstep Heat pumps and lowcarbon systems perform best when the building envelope is already efficient Understanding precisely where heat is lost allows investment to be targeted where it delivers measurable value.
As energy costs remain volatile and regulation tightens, retrofit is no longer a future aspiration It is fast becoming one of the most practical ways to protect building performance, asset value, and occupant wellbeing.

Recruitment Speed: The Competitive Advantage Slipping Away in 2026
UK employers are letting awesome and available talent walkaway during the recruitment process because they are scared about making the wrong hiring decision
Upcoming changes to UK employment legislation has fuelled the fears and anxiety around making the wrong hire To compensate, and to try and avoid making a mistake would-be employers are increasing the length and complexity of the recruitment process; extra interview stages. More decisionmakers Deeper assessments Prolonged internal debate What might have been a two or four-week process slips into six or eight-weeks and requires more resources
Sure, it may feel prudent in that moment, but, in practice, it’s counterproductive with talent losing patience and joining recruitment competitors that move quicker

Navigating the Statutory Sick Pay Changes: What Small Businesses Need to Know
Currently, the first three qualifying days of absence, known as waiting days, are unpaid unless a company's sick pay policy provides otherwise. However, this changes from April 2026, when SSP becomes payable from day one of sickness absence The weekly SSP rate will increase from £118 75 to £123 25
Further reforms include the removal of the SSP Lower Earnings Limit, extending eligibility to employees previously excluded due to earnings thresholds Additionally, whilst SSP is capped at £123 25 weekly, payments may be lower where 80% of Average Weekly Earnings applies.
These changes require a careful review of existing payroll processes and sick of pay policies MJV Consulting can guide you through these legislative updates and ensure your business remains compliant. Contact us on www.mjvconsulting.co.uk to discuss further

It’s all about purpose, so what’s the point of a
Fractional Sales Director?
Many SME owners reach a point where sales feel harder than they should Enquiries slow down, opportunities drift, and growth becomes unpredictable. It is rarely because people don’t care or lack ability More often, it is because nobody truly owns sales leadership or provides clear direction and consistency
This is where a fractional sales director brings purpose and awareness.
The role is not about “doing the selling” for the business It is about creating awareness, clarity, focus, and structure so sales becomes a way of being not doing. This includes helping the team focus on the right opportunities, improving how conversations happen, and making sure good prospects don’t quietly disappear through lack of follow-up It also means paying proper attention to existing customers. Many businesses lose growth simply because relationships
relationships are not nurtured consistently
Just as importantly, the role is about people, because it is all about the people
Through coaching, mentoring, and spending time alongside the team, individuals build confidence and capability In a SME a number of people

Gatwick Diamond Members Face Policy Whiplash
— Yet Continue to Adapt and Thrive
For gdb members, the past week’s political and fiscal headlines have sharpened an already unsettled mood An election U-turn in the region, unitary authorities, regional mayors coupled with persistent speculation about the Prime Minister’s grip on power, has reinforced concerns about policy continuity at a time when businesses are finalising investment decisions and forward budgets.

Confirmed increases in employer National Insurance contributions and the National Minimum Wage are accelerating wage inflation. Business rate revisions, evolving digital taxation rules and uncertainty surrounding business inheritance taxation add further complexity — particularly for owner-managed firms balancing growth ambitions with succession planning. For many, forecasting has become an exercise in scenario planning rather than certainty
Global Exposure, Global Risk
For members exporting and those with supply chains exposed to international markets, volatility is amplified. Renewed tariff rhetoric from Donald Trump and the possibility of a more protectionist US trade stance are prompting exporters in advanced manufacturing, avionics and precision engineering to reassess pricing, sourcing and market exposure. Even potential trade barriers can delay real investment decisions
“Across sectors, gdb members continue to adapt and thrive, grounded in long‑term confidence.”
Regional Fundamentals Remain Strong
Crucially, the Gatwick Diamond continues to outperform many parts of the UK Anchored by Gatwick Airport and strengthened by its strategic rail connectivity, the region leverages its intellectual property base, skilled workforce and entrepreneurial culture to sustain above-average productivity
Collaboration Over Volatility
Infrastructure investment continues through billions of private business investment, while town centre regeneration programmes are being led by local authorities, town centre managers and committed stakeholders focused on delivery. In contrast to national political turbulence, the regional approach remains pragmatic and forward-looking
Across sectors from robotics and AI to med-tech, advanced manufacturing, avionics and logistics gdb members continue to adapt and thrive, grounded in long-term confidence in the region’s enduring strengths

How purpose-led employment is offering an alternative for those at Career Crossroads
In a world of uncertainty and fastpaced AI integration, people are becoming increasingly nervous about their chosen career paths, and what once was a clear route to success is no longer guaranteed Increased competition, combined with fewer vacancies and stagnating wages, are real factors driving the workforce to seek more meaningful work in a postCovid world, a trend reflected by a sharp rise in demand for coaching and counselling
counselling training throughout the Gatwick Diamond
Coaching, mentoring and counselling may not traditionally appear on the radar of mid-career professionals, but it’s a fact that many of the soft skills needed to perform in this sector are found in the corporate world - active listening, emotional intelligence, managing difficult conversations and supporting transition, to name but a few

For example, coaching and mentoring training can help you support others on their career journey, and combined with your own authentic experiences, can be a strong foundation

The Next Corporate Scandal Will Start in a Plant Room
Boards tend to focus on visible risks: revenue, staffing, market position, reputation. Physical safety risks are frequently delegated and assumed to be “managed” once inspections are complete
complete, certificates filed, and audits passed
But history shows that major safety failures rarely result from missing equipment They result from missed warnings, deferred investment, and unclear ownership Warning signs are often present for years but interpreted as minor operational issues rather than indicators of systemic failure.
The most resilient organisations take a different approach They maintain direct oversight of building safety, insist on competent assurance, and treat technical risk as strategic risk embedded within governance.
In an era of heightened scrutiny, the next major corporate scandal is unlikely to start in the boardroom
It will start in a neglected plant room.
