Acclaimed character comedian and “the world’s most famous blagger” (The Daily Telegraph), Simon is now performing as himself and is fresh off a sold-out, critically acclaimed 120-date international tour with his latest show, Screwed Up. The show had performed to sold-out audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022 and Dominic Maxwell (The Times) said “no show has made (him) laugh more than this one…”. Simon’s many television appearances include Live at the Apollo and Sunday Night at the Palladium, as well as his own documentary Britain’s Greatest Hoaxer on Channel 4. Britain’s Greatest Hoaxer was nominated for best Documentary at the Monte Carlo TV Festival Golden Nymph Awards 2018. This Black-Tie event will once again see the very best of the Gatwick Diamond Business community come together to celebrate the achievements of World-Class businesses in this World Class region. Now in their 16th year, the Awards are a well-established highlight of the business calendar. EV charging will be among the facilities on offer when Gatwick Business Show is staged next year. Free parking and wifi will also be available for the duration of the event at The Felbridge Hotel and Spa. Organiser Mike Monk said finding a venue with first-class facilities was important to attract exhibitors and
visitors from a wide range of sectors. “People in business need to be assured that they can access an event easily and never be ‘off grid’ for important communications,” he said. “This hotel ticks all the right boxes and, I am sure, it will add a touch of luxury to the day.” The Crowne Plaza®-owned hotel sits in manicured gardens and boasts a stateof-the-art spa with a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and pool. The latest businesses to sign up to exhibit at the October 17 event include Fresh Display Limited, Delta Security Management and Plumpton Racecourse. The full list is updated daily and available to view online. Mike, founder of the successful Brighton & Hove Business Show, is staging the event in partnership with Gatwick Diamond Business. Open from 10am to 3pm, the show
will be held in the hotel’s ballroom and Willow Suite. While stand bookings are already being taken, visitor registrations will not open until nearer the date. Free seminars and workshops will take place throughout the day and the timetable is currently being formulated. Previous, similar events have received highly positive feedback. Susan Beckingham, of Sussex Copywriting Services, said: “As an exhibitor, I was extremely impressed. A great day, and perfectly organised, too. Thanks for inviting Sussex Copywriting Services to have a stand. Well done, Mike. Definitely booking next year.” To view the latest list of exhibitors and show floor plan, visit brightonandhovebusinessshow.uk/ other-shows/gatwick/exhibitorslist/?turqtick_venue=gatwick

It's time to focus on Impactful collaboration How important to you and your organisation is knowing where your employees have the most #energyforimpact, where their proclivities lie and how much better do you think team work and cross-function collaboration could be if you could map that out? If you and each member of your team could understand where they add most value and what energy they have for a particular activity, but also where their
energy is drained, the reality is, you would have the winning combination for success, resilience and adaptability. The perfect ingredients to a delicious recipe. Unlike other assessment tools the GC Index® doesn’t measure personality type, skills or competence, instead measuring the natural energy of how individuals can impact an organisation. No other assessment tool offers the same insight… so I was drawn in and have become fascinated with how this
organimetric, in my line of work, is so impactful and eye opening, especially when working cross-culturally or with newly formed teams (and even more so after a merger). The GC Index®offers industry leading insight into the real business impact of teams and individuals. It shows individuals, teams and organisations, how they can make their best contribution to drive measurable business outcomes and boost growth or development. It is truly revolutionising the way that teams and organisations operate, shifting mindsets to focus on impact. It could really be your Game Changer! Curious? Deliveroo ruling leaves gig workers in limbo A landmark ruling by the UK Supreme Court has determined that Deliveroo riders are not ‘workers’ but independent contractors lacking employment rights. The decision undermines previous judgments granting greater employment protections to workers in the booming gig economy. While the court stated Deliveroo contractors enjoy considerable autonomy – they can appoint substitutes and work for multiple companies – it leaves them exposed legally. Without worker status, basic rights such as paid holidays, rest breaks and collective bargaining remain out of reach. The Independent Workers’ of Great Britain union criticised the judgement as undermining security for millions signed up to work for digital platforms. It pledged to lobby government for an urgent law change guaranteeing platform workers formal recognition of worker or employment status. Deliveroo trumpeted the ruling as acknowledging the prized flexibility of its model. It argued additional benefits

provided, like free insurance plans and payouts for new parents, are preferable to an outdated worker model. However, relying on voluntary company provisions rather than statutory rights creates a deregulated labour market. Our research suggests platforms want to have their cake and eat it. They often engage labourers as self-employed contractors, while providing a patchwork of privatised social and employment protections which suit their needs. These aren’t backed by employment law and are simply contractual agreements among businesses. The ruling has implications for the gig economy, which employs millions of people in the UK and worldwide. This precarious grey area, where the self-employed receive benefits of their employers’ choosing, could become the new normal without political intervention. It also raises questions about how to balance the need for flexibility and innovation with the need for security and fairness in the labour
market. Find out more about our research at digit-research.org www.sussex.ac.uk

Martin Searle Solicitors launch their new campaign “Menopause Matters” in January 2024 to stamp out Menopause Discrimination in the Workplace In January 2024, Martin Searle Solicitors’ Employment Law Team are launching “Menopause Matters”, their new campaign to raise awareness and to stamp out menopause discrimination at work. Their campaign focuses on providing best practice advice to employers about supporting their staff who are going through the menopause, as well as advising and assisting menopausal employees and workers who are not supported at work or who are experiencing menopause discrimination. Although the menopause is not specifically identified as a type of discrimination under the Equality Act, the Employment Law Team are seeing a number of employees with menopausal symptoms experiencing disability discrimination, age discrimination and/ or sex discrimination at work. Many workplaces do not adequately
support their staff who are going through the menopause. A 2022 report by the Fawcett Society reported that 80% of women said that their employer did not have a menopause policy in place or offered any training to staff around the menopause. Sadly, one in ten menopausal women have left their job due to their symptoms. Fiona Martin, Director and Head of Employment Law, said “We are a campaigning law firm and want to make menopause discrimination a thing of the past. We encourage employers to be aware of the issues and to make reasonable adjustments where necessary." Their campaign includes a free seminar for employee advisers on Menopause Discrimination At Work and a seminar for non-profit organisations on Menopause Discrimination – Best Practice for Employers. Martin Searle Solicitors Employment Law Team
are also providing a free 30 minute confidential advice line on the rights of staff going through the menopause and employer duties to support employees and workers on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout January 2024. APPRENTICESHIPS WITH CCG As National Apprenticeship Week approaches, Chichester College Group (CCG) will be celebrating the invaluable contributions of apprenticeships. With over 50 years’ experience, we are extremely proud to deliver apprenticeships to more than 1,000 employers.
What is an apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are a form of work-based training that combines on-the-job learning with classroom instruction. They provide individuals with the opportunity to gain practical skills, knowledge, and experience in a specific trade or profession. We offer apprenticeships in a wide range of industries, including Construction, Engineering, Landbased, Care, Education, Early Years, Hair & Beauty, Catering & Hospitality, Business and Creative. During an apprenticeship, individuals work alongside experienced professionals, known as mentors or supervisors, who guide and train them in the various aspects of the trade. This hands-on experience allows apprentices to develop practical skills while earning a wage. In addition to the on-the-job training, apprentices also attend formal classes or workshops to learn the theoretical aspects of their chosen field. Apprenticeships provide a valuable pathway for individuals to enter the workforce, gain industry-recognised qualifications, and establish a solid foundation for their careers. The cost of an apprenticeship will vary depending on your business size, the type of apprenticeship and the age of your apprentice.

Vazon Technology celebrates 7 Years with new service launch: Business Intelligence (BI) Solutions To mark the occasion we spoke with founder, Roger Bateman, on the journey the business has taken over the past seven years! How has the business changed since starting? We started out implementing new and already selected business systems like ERP into SMEs. We expanded to deliver CRM and system optimisation projects into both new and existing clients. Right now there is a desire from clients to get more out of their existing software investments. In turn, this has become a significant part of the business. The core of what we do is unchanged: To assist in strategy, planning, and delivery of those all-important digital transformation projects, which can super charge your business. What have you learned since starting out? Having helped clients with their change
projects, small or large, we have found that many then look for better ways to understand their business performance, over and above a conventional business report; something both analytical and impactful. So, we have established a new service to meet this demand: Business Intelligence Solutions. What is Business Intelligence and why is it needed? Business Intelligence covers collecting, storing, and analysing data from business operations or activities to optimise performance. Anyone who has stored data sets (systems like Accounts packages, CRM, ERP...) and is looking to retrieve information insights, can use BI to their advantage. We use Microsoft Power BI and Excel to achieve this. BI is particularly useful for large data sets or those stored across multiple modules or systems. An example use-case would be comparing sales and margin trends against product range, item, and cost. A
few clicks would reveal the underlying data in all its detail. Think about BI as a Rubik Cube that you can pick apart: It is extremely powerful and leads to significant business insights as a consequence. To learn more about BI visit our new website and start your journey to greater business insights! www.vazontechnology.co.uk
Pallet Networks are here to stay Crawley based haulier Eezehaul Logistics are a member of TPN - THE Pallet Network - but what exactly is a pallet network and what are the benefits? Well, a pallet network consists of independent professional hauliers that work together to provide cost effective delivery services of palletised freight across the UK, Ireland and beyond. The networks operate through a principle known as ‘hub & spoke’ so how does your freight get from A to B on a next day delivery? Using Eezehaul as an example:• Eezehaul collects freight from the BN, RH & KT postcodes and return it to their own depot. • Any pallets for delivery outside Eezehaul’s area are loaded onto trunk vehicles and transported to THE Pallet Network hub. • The vehicles are unloaded at the hub,
pallets are sorted, routed and transferred onto trunk vehicles to the area where the pallets need to be delivered to. • Once back at the delivery depot, the freight is loaded onto smaller trucks for delivery to the end user. Companies and businesses can benefit from cost effective and environmentally efficient forms of road transportation. They do not need to invest in any equipment or I.T. and
have full visibility of tracking and proof of deliveries. According to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), on average a UK customer is always within six miles of a pallet network member! With a growing demand for palletised deliveries, pallet networks are at the forefront of the freight industry and are here to stay. www.eezehaul.co.uk

Some Diamond Opportunities… Don’t Miss Out! The gdb Diamond Mentoring Programme continues to thrive and flourish, with a strong group of mentors active and ready to support fellow members of gdb. We can help with, for example, business development, marketing, IT and people skills (e.g. leadership, management, negotiation, presentation). The mentors are all volunteers, and the service is free to members. Authors Assemble! In addition, we have a peer mentor group running online called “Authors Assemble” (coined by our very own Jeremy Taylor). This group is open to any gdb member who is writing (or thinking of writing) a book. Currently, we have folks writing fiction, business and autobiographical pieces. We have discussed keeping motivated, styles of writing, approaches to publishing and holding each other to account! It is an informal group where we share ideas and help each other out. High Impact Public Speaking Finally, another group has emerged in the form of a short workshop about public
speaking, co-sponsored by East Sussex National and Joe Cheal (Imaginarium Learning & Development), who also delivered the session. Feedback was very positive, with everyone taking something from the lively event, including: • how to structure a high impact presentation, • closing the gap between you and the audience, • managing nerves (and how to be a more confident speaker), • how to handle questions (and hostile audiences!) professionally. Feedback from participants was that the session was engaging, entertaining, interactive, fun, relatable, clear, focussed… and more. Gerry Lawrence (Director at Freeman Clarke) elaborated: “Joe has oodles of experience in training and presenting and he gave me some superb tips and tricks to level-up my own process!" Joe said he was delighted with the feedback and how well the event was received: “Not only was it a brilliant group, but it was also great to have an opportunity to showcase what I have
been doing for the past 30 years!” To Find Out More Contact Joe Cheal (Mentor Programme Lead, joe@imaginariumdev.com) if you think working with a mentor might help you or your business… or you would like to join the author group… or find out more about public speaking…

Find Out What’s in Store for Creative Pod in 2024!
It’s an exciting year ahead for the multiaward-winning agency Creative Pod! 2024 will bring a year of celebration for them as they mark their 18th birthday. This remarkable milestone is a testament to the team’s unwavering commitment and creativity within the dynamic landscape of the marketing industry. Since the agency launched in 2006, CEO Matt Turner has created a one-of-
a-kind culture and developed a hardworking team that sets this agency apart. Because of this, they work hard to give their clients creative marketing with a Michelin-star service to shout about. Matt said: “What an incredible 18 years it has been! I’ve watched Creative Pod overcome hurdles, but I’ve seen the team emerge stronger every time, ready to move forward. We’ve evolved with the times, and kept up to date with modern technologies, whilst always offering Michelin-Star service.” With a big focus on networking this year, they have a fantastic lineup of events and award ceremonies they are sponsoring. Kicking off with The Dynamic Awards and Dynamic Festival in February, the Rockinghorse Glitter Ball in March, The Best of British Brighton in
May, and The Sussex Contemporary in October. Towards the latter part of the year, they also sponsor The Starr Trust Winter Ball, Best of British Gatwick and The Chestnut Snowman Ball. Matt is taking the team away for the third time on an all-expenses paid trip to enjoy a weekend of activities, food, and fun! It's a great way to let off some steam and say thank you to his team. They also have two team members celebrating their 40th birthdays (Matt included) and three weddings. As always, they will continue to spread their client base across the Southeast, offering creative marketing, website, and design services. Keep an eye out on their social media to see some throwback moments! www.creativepod.uk.com
Full Expensing – As good as it sounds? The Autumn Statement had two main announcements for companies. Firstly, the R&D rules will be further tightened following claims the scheme was being abused. For accounting periods starting after 1 April 2024, the SME scheme and the Research and Development Enhanced Credit (“RDEC”) scheme will be merged into a single rate of credit of 20%. After applying corporation tax, most companies will receive a payable tax credit of 15%. Secondly, full expensing will become a permanent relief. Allowing companies to claim deduction against their taxable profits of 100% of the spend for qualifying plant and machinery expenditure, which is worth up to £250 per £1,000 of capital spend and 50% of the spending on certain items. Below provides some guidance on qualifying expenditure. 100% Allowance • Plant & Machinery • Fixtures & Fittings • Computers
14
Diamond Magazine
50% Allowance • HVAC Systems • Lighting • Electrical Systems However, there are important factors companies should be aware of: 1. It only applies to companies and not unincorporated businesses e.g. LLPs; 2. If full expensing is claimed, any item that is disposed of for consideration will be taxable; 3. Taxpayers with capital spend less than £1m should alternatively consider the AIA; 4. Assets acquired on finance leases will not qualify for full expensing relief; 5. Certain expenditure is excluded from the relief including cars and assets used for leasing (other than background plant and machinery) and further tax planning will be required. Leasing can encompass a broader range of activities than many companies realise, potentially including groups with asset holding companies that allow other group companies to use assets. This is
common within the construction sector and companies may not be eligible for relief and should review their strategy if expected group spend exceeds the £1m AIA limit. Whilst the relief will prove valuable, companies should review their tax strategy to ensure that they are optimising the position. www.menzies.co.uk

Protect your business from money laundering - and comply with the law It’s a fact of life that legitimate businesses are targeted by those operating outside of the law. For a wide range of companies in the Gatwick Diamond and beyond, one of the risks they face and must manage is money laundering. And with that, they must ensure they are compliant with the law.
Derek Mann, Director, CaPS What is money laundering? The term is used to describe the act of converting the proceeds of crime into useable, ready funds by disguising its origins. It costs the UK economy more than £100 billion a year while at the same time contributing to both criminal and terrorist organisations. Money laundering is hugely damaging on many levels, so stringent laws are in place for good reason. Indeed, hundreds of companies, including a number in the Gatwick Diamond area, were hit with fines for non-compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) legislation in 2022-2023, according to recent figures. One of the most common offences? ‘Failing to apply for registration at the required time', with individual fines ranging from £1500.00 to £53,000.00! Are we just talking about accountants and bookkeepers here? No, criminals have become adept at using a whole variety of ways to retain, disguise and conceal the proceeds of their crimes. It is why the UK Government in 2023 announced a renewed focus on money laundering and terrorist financing.
Broadly speaking, all money services businesses and those handling significant financial transactions are potential targets for money launderers. The legislation identifies the following business activities: • Banking and financial services • Independent legal professionals • Estate and Lettings agents • Casinos • Professional service accounting firms (including Bookkeepers) • Trust and Company Service providers • Art and antiques • High value dealers How to protect your company Once registered, your company then needs to put in place solid policies and procedures to protect it from money launderers. Here are some of the important steps you need to consider: • Complete and document robust business wide and client risk assessments. This will help with putting the necessary procedures in place to counteract any risks posed to the company. • Customer Due Diligence is a fundamental AML practice requiring service providers to verify and understand their clients. It ensures that you know who you're doing business with, reducing the risk of facilitating money laundering. • Maintain comprehensive records which involves keeping accurate and up-to-date documentation of client interactions and transactions. • Training your employees is essential to ensure that staff members are well-versed in AML policies and procedures. • Engaging with independent audits is a crucial role in gaining an impartial validation of the effectiveness of your AML processes. How to Pitch – 5 top tips for raising investment Last month the University of Sussex Business Angels group held its inaugural pitch day, bringing together a group of local angel investors to help founders from the wider University of Sussex community kickstart and grow their businesses. Here are five key pieces of advice I’ve taken away from watching companies pitch for investment: 1. Structure your pitch – this may seem a little prescriptive, but there are certain things that all investors want to know about. Start by succinctly introducing who you are and what you’re asking for, then explain the problem you solve, the size of the market opportunity and your solution. Introduce the competition and your differences, then outline your “go to market” strategy, including financial forecasts and any traction/milestones you have hit already. Finally, introduce
your team and reframe your “ask” – how will the funds help you to grow? 2. Practice, practice, practice – there’s simply no substitute for being well rehearsed and refined. 3. 100 Questions– try to think of 100 questions that a potential investor might ask you. You’ll notice themes emerging that should inform your slide deck. 4. It’s as much what you say as how you say it – your body language and tone of voice are key. Be positive, be confident, be yourself. If you feel nervous, reframe that nervous energy as excitement by telling yourself “I’m excited to pitch”. It helps! 5. Ultimately, it boils down to two things – do they like you? And do they like your business? If they answer yes to both, an investor is likely to be interested. After that, it’s your job to back up your pitch with action.

I hate my Job so much right now - with apologies to Kelis Now tinsel, champagne and choosing perfect gifts for loved ones is behind us and we are imagining the year ahead stretching out in front of us, are you feeling less than excited about being back at work? Are you (or someone you know) is finding being back at work a bit depressing because you are in disagreement with your boss or a colleague at the moment? A new year is a great time to reflect and think about your career plans. Take yourself back to that phone call or letter when you discovered the job was yours. Close your eyes and go back there for a few moments. After the slog of applications, interviews and presentations you were offered the job and it felt great. If you are one of the 75% of people who at some stage in their career quit
their job because of their manager you might be better served by looking at what you can do with your current job, remembering it was once your dream job, before moving on to the next one. If you had a magic wand and could somehow get your colleague or boss to see their behaviour from your point of view would that be a useful? You have nothing to lose here. If it turns out that your boss is the narcissistic
psychopath you thought they were, that won’t change. What will have changed is your ability to face difficult workplace relationships effectively. That’s a skill you can refine and repurpose for the rest of your working life, particularly when you are the one in the managerial seat. Get in touch with Sue via email at Sue@scdpeoplesolutions.com to talk about workplace conflict resolution and mediation.
A New Year Proposal: navigating the joy of love and living together New Year proposals can be a wonderful start to the year and lead to a lifetime of shared memories. Of course, in an ever changing and diverse society, some couples prefer not to marry and instead, enter into a civil partnership or simply live together. Having open conversations about financial habits and lifestyle choices early can avoid
misunderstandings later on. Cohabitation Moving in together is a major step and, whilst sharing a living space can be exciting, it can sometimes expose differences about attitudes to spending and household chores. Statistics show that the number of unmarried cohabitating couples has been steadily rising since the 1990s yet the status of cohabiting couples has been misunderstood throughout with many believing they have rights as either a ‘common law husband’ or ‘common law wife’. Sadly, they usually find out too late that is not the case and that unmarried couples have very limited legal rights, if any, regardless of how long they have been together or whether they have children. Living together and prenuptial agreements In the context of modern relationships, both living together agreements
18

and prenuptial agreements have emerged as tools to help build a solid foundation. These agreements are not about anticipating failure but, rather, about fostering transparency and understanding. They may cover a range of topics from financial contributions to the division of household chores and can serve as a road map for navigating potential challenges. Whilst sometimes thought of as ‘unromantic,’ these agreements provide a framework which can prevent potential conflicts. Growing together Living together and prenuptial agreements are not the end but, rather, the foundation for a relationship to flourish. As life unfolds, it is important these agreements are revisited and adjusted to reflect any changes that life has brought. Shield Pest Control’s Advice on How to Prevent Your Business from Pests
Shield Pest Control is one of London’s longest-running and highly regarded pest control organisations. Here, the team at Shield Pest Control discusses common workplace pests, along with how these can be dealt with and prevented moving forward. When it comes to an office, mice can move into the space and easily survive on food left inside of drawers. These unwelcome inhabitants can survive on just three grams of food each day, so
even the smallest amount of food left over in an office space is enough to fuel a mouse’s diet. The best solution to this is to keep food in air-tight boxes and ensure that nothing is left behind that could attract pests. Other workplaces such as warehouses are also associated with mice and rats due to the amount of space for them to hide. Everyday items like pallets create ideal harbourages for rodents, especially if stock rotation does not take place
regularly. Ensure all pallets containing food items are stored above ground level to make it harder for rodents to gain access. Storing pallets away from walls prevents rodents from feeling protected as they often stick to the perimeter of buildings to feel safe. When it comes to restaurants, rodents, cockroaches, and flies are by far the most common pest culprits. Regular monitoring of no less than 12 service visits per annum is recommended for restaurants. This allows any pest activity to be addressed early to prevent business disruption. Within all workplaces, it is crucial to ensure that any gaps and holes are sealed to deny the ingress of pests. Avoid waiting until you see evidence of pests to ask for help as this is often too late. For further advice or to get in contact, visit shieldpestcontrol.co.uk

From Inefficient to Productive: Top Ten Virtual Meeting Hacks more focus time. They found that the #1 disruptor of productivity was inefficient meetings, and #3 disrupter was… too many meetings. So, we've curated our top ten hacks to make virtual meetings more productive (and fun).
Before scheduling another virtual meeting, ask yourself if it's necessary. If it is, can you reduce the duration in half to free up more focus time for everyone? In 2023, Microsoft surveyed 31,000 people across 31 countries, and twothirds of respondents reported needing
1. Meeting norms: Establish them. Then, remind attendees at the start of each meeting. For example, agenda in advance, begin and finish on time, share the mic, one person talking at a time, camera on or off, and take a break if needed. 2. Accessibility: Prepare for a diverse audience - check on participant accessibility needs such as captions. 3. Pre-reading: Reduces meeting time significantly and sometimes removes the need for the meeting. 4. Agenda: Have a good quality one and stick to it. This helps everyone prepare
and follow along. 5. Moderator: Assign a moderator to run the meeting inclusively. 6. Check-ins: Welcome everyone and use a playful 60-second check-in. 7. Speaking norms: For example, “Use the ‘raise-hand’ if you want to speak and unmute.” 8. Meeting length: Experiment with short meetings - some of my most productive meetings are less than 15 minutes. 9. Interactive tools: Use virtual boards and capture meeting notes live with tools such as Otter.ai. 10. Parking lot: If something doesn't relate to the meeting, add a parking lot for a future meeting. The report was launched at the Foundation’s annual meeting at the Brighthelm Centre in Brighton, which was attended by local organisations and charities, as well as numerous donors and supporters of the Foundation. The report, the first of a series of ‘Sussex Uncovered Reports’ focusing on the Foundation’s funding priorities, investigates the population dynamics in Sussex and the levels of poverty and disadvantage in our communities. It highlights particular areas of high need (including Hastings, Portslade, Crawley and Eastbourne) and the four key challenges we are facing in
the county: an aging population, high levels of long-term illness and poor outcomes for those with a disability; inflationary pressures are contributing towards financial hardship and there are multiple deprivation challenges in coastal communities. Kevin Richmond, CEO at Sussex Community Foundation, said: “While there is a lot of stark data, and worrying information in this report, we do not despair. Let’s Get Physical! A friend recently asked how my ‘mental health’ business is going. “Great!” I replied, “But it’s not just mental health issues that I help people overcome, I mostly help people heal physical conditions, typically including ME, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Long Covid, IBS, chronic pain, insomnia, headaches, tinnitus and many others, too.” She looked rather bewildered. How can you get rid of a physical illness? Let me explain. When we experience any kind of threat, whether to our life, our happiness, comfort, joy etc, our brain triggers an evolutionary response as if we are being chased by a tiger, and it produces a surge of fight or flight hormones, including the well-known stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. This primes our limb muscles for action, by changing our breathing rate, heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar
and thyroid, taking some of the power that would normally go to our digestion, critical thinking, sleep and immune system. Physical changes, that we were only designed to experience briefly. But with modern lifestyles, our bodies are running in stress mode too frequently, which leads to disease and illness. 21st Century stress is not usually caused by tigers, but more ongoing things including money worries, job insecurities, sedentary lifestyle, toxic relationships, commuting delays, unhealthy food choices, traumatic experiences, and also our thoughts about any of these. But the human body is designed to self-heal! (Who knew?) I teach mindbody techniques to switch off that physical stress response, which when applied appropriately and consistently activates the body’s natural healing
system. So that symptoms; mental, emotional and physical, can reduce and fade away. Aaahhhhh… Jo Sawkins is a fatigue and pain specialist and provides Health and Wellbeing solutions to help people bounce back from long term health conditions. jo@wingswellbeing.co.uk www.wingswellbeing.co.uk

Why New Year’s resolutions fail - and how to get yours back on track Did you set any resolutions this year? How are you doing with them? If they’ve already slipped, that’s ok, according to research 80% of resolutions fail. Here are my top tips for helping you set and keep effective resolutions: Start small: saying “I’ll never drink again” might well be how you feel on New Year’s Day, but big sweeping, absolute (“never”) statements, never stick. They create feelings of resistance and discomfort and push us to do the very thing we’re swearing ourselves off. It’s more effective to focus on the micro decisions we take each day. Try saying; I won’t drink today, or I won’t have this one drink right now, or, I’ll just have a medium glass of wine instead of a large. Small changes are lasting changes. Reward progress: This isn’t about
replacing one bad habit with another! If you’ve got through a week without drinking, then treat yourself with a really nice drink on a Friday. Don't binge drink, it’s not about saving up your “quota” but if you enjoy an alcoholic drink, then do it well; treat yourself to a nicer glass and take the time to really enjoy it. Think about how you want to feel: Giving up alcohol might be a good thing, but what is the end result you’re trying to get to? Cutting something out makes us focus on the negative and that makes us feel like we’re depriving ourselves of something we actually might really enjoy. Spend time getting really clear about what you’re trying to achieve. If it’s sleeping better and having more motivation in the mornings, feeling clearer and in control when you’re
dealing with challenging situations, or feeling more energised and healthier, focus on these things first, because saying no, becomes much easier. integrityperformanceconsultancy.co.uk

A Refreshing Approach to Goal Setting for 2024 At this time of year, many of my coaching sessions are about goals for the year ahead - earnings, achievements, changes. In the corporate world, the S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting model is often emphasised but this never resonated with me, nor do I use it with my clients. Instead, I encourage you to understand what you WANT and WHY. What truly drives you? What makes you eager to start work on Mondays? What do you want so passionately that you’ll step out of your comfort zone? Here’s some questions to consider, and responses from recent clients to inspire your thoughts! How do you want to feel ABOUT your business this year? • Proud of my achievements • That my work better reflects what’s important to me How do you want to feel IN your business this year? • More joy and lightness rather than
anxiety and stress • In control of my business instead of it controlling me What is your primary business theme this year? • Expanding and hiring new employees • Reinventing my brand to establish expertise or specific leadership Why do you want to achieve that? • I want to help x and make a huge difference • I want to retire in 5 years How will achieving that improve your life? • I’ll be more present with my partner/ family/kids • I’ll be less stressed, sleep better and my health will improve See the difference? Using AI ethically for business At the November education seminar, Kieran McNeill from Scaramanga Agency, presented an update on some of the main AI (artificial intelligence) tools available for businesses and how to adopt these into their business, taking into account the ethical aspects. If you missed the seminar, Kieran and Claire Scaramanga have recorded a podcast, which covers the areas
discussed. There has been a huge uptake in the adoption of AI since ChatGPT was introduced by OpenAI (now part of Microsoft) in November 2022. There are generative AI tools covering every aspect of business, as well as open source models which businesses can use to develop their own models to train with relevant data sets and then use.
In terms of ethics, Kieran looks at many aspects, including the question of plagiarism and the potential damage that AI-generated content could do to your search engine optimisation. AI can now pass the Turing test, where a computer is indistinguishable online from a human – a CAPTCHA is an example of a Turing test. This is making it harder for computers to detect AI content and identify plagiarism. However, humans can often tell the difference! At Scaramanga, we create a lot of original content for clients, but we do not use AI to write any of it. We think AI has a part to play (topic research for example), but that human creativity is still very important and must be preserved. You can listen to the podcast at: scaramanga.agency/about/podcasts

than ever before with new customer information systems, more ticket gates, a dedicated passenger assistance point enhancing the passenger experience and helping people move through the station more quickly. The new concourse will now act as the new entrance for people accessing the airport terminal, while the existing concourse will be for people exiting. The existing station concourse, station footbridges and the South Terminal linkspan have been refurbished and reconfigured to provide a seamless one-way system to the airport from the train station. Lucy McAuliffe, Network Rail Sussex route director, said: “I’m delighted to see the upgraded Gatwick Airport station open

and encourages people to ditch the car and travel by rail, the cleanest and greenest way to travel. “This project is not just for those making their way to the airport, the work benefits passengers right across the route by giving them quicker journeys and a more reliable timetable. I hope passengers enjoy this newly upgraded station.” Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, said: “With millions of people travelling into Gatwick Airport by train each year, this station is a major public transport hub and has been upgraded thanks to Government funding, improving the train-to-plane journey and delivering more reliable services for passengers. “Today’s opening demonstrates this Government’s commitment to funding improvements to our rail network, transforming a vital station into an impressive gateway to the UK and helping more British and international passengers to travel by train.” Jenny Saunders, Customer Services Director for Govia Thameslink Railway, said: “Our trains sustainably speed people to the airport in just half an hour from London - and that's much better for the environment than driving. “However, the station has been struggling with the numbers using it and that holds up our trains, delaying everyone. “This stunning redevelopment has fixed all that. I genuinely believe our customers are going to love the extra space and improved accessibility that will make the journey between train and plane quicker, easier and more attractive." Jonathan Pollard, Chief Commercial Officer, London Gatwick, said: “From today, airport passengers travelling by train will have a dramatically improved experience as they pass through the bigger, better and brighter new station concourse. This fantastic new, fully accessible station concourse will encourage even more passengers to come to the airport using sustainable public transport.” www.gatwickexpress.com

Welcome to Helen Underwood-Lewis
Burgess Hill business Lea Graham Entertainment has recently welcomed Helen Underwood-Lewis as a new partner to its team.
Helen has joined MD Susan Fleet in order to grow the business, which has provided entertainment for events and venues across Sussex for nearly four decades. “I am delighted to be working alongside Susan at Lea Graham Entertainment, she has grown and sustained an excellent client and performer base over the years and what she doesn’t know about the industry isn’t worth knowing! “As a classical soprano, I met Susan through performing and we became instant firm friends. We are confident our shared passion for entertainment will continue to be an asset to our clients, whether they be couples planning a wedding, families hosting a special occasion, or businesses arranging anything from team days to their Christmas party.
We have a vast array of artists on our books, from the more traditional classical singers and musicians to tribute acts, top magicians, comedians and drag queens. It is very exciting for us as we are rapidly expanding our acts and venues – proving that live entertainment is growing in popularity again. We have also recently set up collaborations in order to offer some very exciting experiences to our clients, for example, a chocolate workshop with a top industry professional or working with a variety of expert artists. Electric Charging at London Gatwick Airport London Gatwick has become the first international airport in Europe to open a dedicated electric charging facility, with the new GRIDSERVE Electric Forecourt® now available for all to use. The site has 36 medium and highpower electric vehicle chargers available via contactless payment - ideal for passengers, staff, local residents, commuters, or business fleets - alongside high-speed WIFI, a lounge area, Costa Coffee, Little Fresh convenience store and an interactive EV experience area. The Electric Forecourt® is located on the Ring Road South approach to London Gatwick’s South Terminal. The building is open every day from 4:30am to 10:30pm, with chargers available 24/7 year-round. The new facility follows the opening of London Gatwick’s new-look train station in November, doubling the concourse space, widening platforms and adding new lifts and escalators, and an increase in the Great Western Railway route between London Gatwick and Reading,

The line stops at numerous staff catchments, including Redhill, Reigate and Guildford, as well as providing connectivity to key tourist destinations in the Surrey Hills, like Denbies Wine Estate and Silent Pool distillery. Hannah Godfrey, Senior Surface Access Manager, London Gatwick said: “The increased train service between London Gatwick and Reading is fantastic news for passengers and staff, and
something we felt important to invest in. More than 600 employees at the airport live directly along this route, making sustainable travel increasingly easy and convenient for them and many others across the region.” These projects, alongside the airport helping to fund new hydrogen buses on the local Metrobus network, contribute towards London Gatwick’s ambition for 60% of journeys to and from the airport to be zero or ultra-low emissions, by 2030. www.gatwickairport.com

most complicated of beasts – the global energy markets. Mike strongly believes that a good consultant is often the client’s only hope of navigating the complexity around us and works closely with each client to understand their unique commercial imperatives and attitude to risk.
Mike Stafford and Nick Heng Our Flexible Energy and Risk Management Team We are delighted to introduce our new Head of Flexible Procurement and Risk, Nick Heng. With two decades of energy procurement expertise, commodity risk management and project management behind him, Nick has a strong track record and brings a depth of knowledge to head up our core offering of flexible procurement. Working in tandem with our Flexible Procurement and Risk Manager, Mike Stafford, the combined wealth of expertise and years of experience between them means that our clients are in the most capable hands. Our Client Relationship Manager, Nigel Addison-Evans, who has been onboard with us since August 2023, is a key point of contact for our memberships and has been strengthening the value we are able to offer. Nick Heng’s background In 2016, Nick founded a consultancy to provide businesses with expertise in energy and utilities procurement. His most recent role as a Global Procurement Manager at Johnson Matthey saw him as a key driver of sustainability, delivering in excess of £3m PPV savings in one year. His credibility in procurement is undeniable and he’ll be a critical point of contact for clients looking to manage their risk and drive their sustainability initiatives.
Nigel Addison-Evans’ background Nigel has over 18 years’ experience in the energy sector. He joined us from a supplier and consultancy background, helping both private and public sector clients to manage their energy and reduce their carbon footprint. Nigel is passionate about helping clients reduce their carbon footprint, providing support and guidance on carbon reduction strategies, compliance, renewables, fixed and flexible procurement for power, gas and water, as well as billing queries, siteworks and metering. The case for flexible energy With the recent Israel-Hamas conflict increasing energy prices and the end of the Energy Bills Discount Scheme in March 2024, this new period of uncertainty reinforces the need for businesses to manage their energy requirements on a long-term basis, helping to spread risk and mitigate market volatility. We advise businesses to explore flexible procurement as a way to manage their energy requirements cost-effectively and with minimal risk. Get in touch We recognise that we are fortunate to continually expand our team and that this is a clear reflection of the excellent service we are committed to providing to our clients. If you have any questions or would like to find out more about flexible energy contracts, please do not hesitate to contact our Client Relationship Managers: Contact Nigel Addison-Evans on 07500 027 480 or email him at nigel.addison-evans@cec.uk.com Contact John Loizou on 07425 102 023 or email him at john.loizou@cec.uk.com

Tips for gaining meaningful insights from Microsoft Project plans Are you a Microsoft Project user? Do you find that when you report on project progress that the data doesn’t seem quite right? Many people on my training courses arrive feeling frustrated that their projects “aren’t working”. Project data is only as good as the data that’s put in and, importantly, the way that it is set up in the background. It’s not just what you see in the Gannt Chart view! Some things to consider: Are you going to need insight into physical work hours as well as task durations? To track physical work hours, you will need to allocate people resources to your tasks. If you are tracking the number of hours worked, what does a day and a week translate to?
Day, week and month durations are converted into hours, so you will need to get the calendar options set up correctly. To what level will you need to roll up summary data? Build your work breakdown structure so that your summary tasks are at a level that will help your produce reports. This way you can see total hours, durations, costs and more at the levels you require. What reports could you be asked for? Don’t forget the baseline! Often people are asked to show a comparison between the original plan and what actually happened. Think about this from the outset so that you can save the baseline at the right time. While project has some useful reports, you can also export to Excel and analyse data using PivotTables. Project can be difficult to teach
yourself and some of the essentials are not obvious, so if you have any questions or would like to discuss training for your team, please get in touch with Jane Hames. jane@glidetraining.com
