Answers to Chapter Discussion Questions
1. Several practice-specific quality metrics can be used to identify outcomes of APN practice. Examples include the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections after anAPN-led initiative to reduce use of unnecessary catheter use; clinic wait time after initiative of anAPN
urgent care clinic; or daily lab use after implementation of a Choosing Wisely® initiative to reduce the use of unnecessary lab testing in hospitalized patients.
2. Practice-specific quality metrics can be used to identify the impact ofAPN care by monitoring changes in metrics after implementation of anAPN-led initiative. Dashboards can be used to measure practice-specific quality metrics such as wait times for new appointments, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores, unexpected hospital readmissions, pressure ulcer incidence, discharges by 11 a.m., or adherence to a diabetes mellitus order set, for example. Practice-specific metrics can be used to define the impact of the APN role through identifying outcome metrics that are directly impacted by theAPN role.
3. Strategies that can be used to measureAPRN impact include establishing role-specific metrics, planning for outcome evaluation when any new role is established and building in outcomes as a part of the ongoing professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) processes of an institution’s overall strategic plan to identify impact of theAPN role.
