When it comes to the need for change and modernisation, many city districts face demolition and redevelopment. Contrary to this Edinburgh’s New Town has adapted to suit a variety of different uses and has survived many attitudes towards architecture and urban design. There is no doubt that the New Town is a successful development which is robust enough to withstand time and change. This research is intended to examine the aspects of design within the New Town that contribute to its robustness. Determining these aspects would allow for their inclusion in current development, providing them with a similar robustness.
