The saving of the Christchurch Arts Centre, one of the country’s most famous restorations, is the subject of the next Devonport Heritage night on 29 November. Local heritage architect Dave Pearson is the conservation consultant for the giant restoration project, which is expected to cost $290 million and be completed in two to three years. The 23 stone buildings that make up the complex were severely damaged in the Christchurch earthquakes. The subsequent restoration is one of the largest of its types in the world and has received a number of awards, including one from UNESCO. With a local architect so closely involved, Devonport Heritage felt it was a great opportunity to hear about the epic restoration. Pearson will outline the scale of the destruction and the mammoth job the engineers and architects faced when starting the project. Back in Devonport, Bernice Beachman will look at St Leonards Rd, as part of the ‘Streets Where We Live’ series. Laughter can be the best medicine Comedians David Downs and Willy de Wit are back on stage together for the first time in 20 years – with stories of comedy and pathos. For A Limited Time, a live comedy show that will debut at The Vic theatre on 8 December, brings the pair together to reflect on life after serious illness. They have respectively had, as they put it, a mild touch of cancer and a stroke (of genius). According to Downs, working with de Wit again “is like finding a favourite pair of pants down the back of the wardrobe. They still fit, they are comfortable and familiar, but you’ll only know if they’re still fashionable once you wear them outside”. De Wit concurs. “Working with David is… gosh, only 53 days until Christmas.” Downs, now a senior manager at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, survived cancer by undertaking a ground-breaking treatment in the United States called CAR T-cell therapy; de Wit suffered a stroke in April 2016 and has been recovering for the last two years. For both, it’s their first return to the stage since being faced with their own mortality. For A Limited Time will also feature de Wit’s daughter Miriana McGechie and Downs’ son Joshua Downs. David Downs, who co-founded the Classic Comedy Club and was in TV3’s 1990s show Away Laughing, had been told he had less than a year to live before he got onto a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy earlier this year. It saved his life. The treatment harnesses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer, and is recognised as opening a new frontier for treatment. During his treatment and recovery, he wrote for Stuff and was featured on TV3’s The Project and in the Flagstaff. De Wit was a high-profile comedian during the 1990s and a member of the comedy troupe Funny Business, which had its own sketch show in the late ’80s. He was also a Radio Hauraki host for 12 years. De Wit was in a wheelchair as he recovered from the stroke, but is now able to walk with a stick. The pair have known each other for more than two decades. Downs even married his wife, Katherine, in de Wit’s Devonport Bond St home in 1995. The idea for the joint show was hatched at de Wit’s birthday party in 2017. Downs had just been given the diagnosis that he had terminal cancer. de Wit wanted his old friend to hang around a bit. “I am so blessed to have the love and care of this galoot,” de Wit, says of Downs, 25 years since they were last on stage together. “We made a kind of pact. ‘I said, ‘David you can’t die, you’ve got to go on stage with me’. It’s a reward for sticking around.” The show will be in a sense “cathartic”, says de Wit. “It will address our mortality,” but through a comedic lens. Stand-up comedy, “although I can’t stand-up”

Janayah wins a solo spot at Christmas in the Park

Reaching for the stars… Janayah Wadsworth’s stellar 2018 continues Thirteen-year-old Janayah Wadsworth will sing solo at this year’s Coca Cola Christmas in the Park at the Auckland Domain on 8 December, topping off a stellar year for the Takapuna Grammar School (TGS) student. In her first year at high school she has been awarded the 2018 North Harbour Club AIMES (Arts, Innovation, Music, Education, Sport and Service to the Community) Junior Excellence Award for arts and won the TGS Talent Show. Being selected to perform at Christmas in the Park is the cream on the cake, and something she is “very excited about”. Janayah has previously featured in the

Flagstaff as a two-years-in-a-row Belmont Intermediate School Idol winner. She has had vocal lessons with well-known singer and vocal coach Suzanne Lynch since she was nine years old. Lynch, one half of the legendary duo The Chicks, has also taught her vocal technique and performance skills, and mentored her as she makes her way into the entertainment industry. DevonportProperty.nz Report — October 2018 Buyers in the driving seat as listings flood the market Spring is the most active period of the property year and no single month is more active than October. This year is no different, with a flood of new listings. What is unusual, and significant, is the slowdown in sales volumes. This situation now places the local Devonport market firmly in the category of a ‘buyer market’. There’s ample choice for buyers, who now wield power to select and negotiate; this presents a significant challenge for sellers as the competition for buyer attention is tough and their negotiation power is slipping away. In just the past three months, 77 new properties have come onto the market. Meanwhile, just 40 properties have been sold, pushing available inventory to a record high of 57 properties. By comparison, at this time last year buyers had just 37 properties to choose from. Sales volumes, which had held up well through the winter months, have

median price of $1,600,000 identical to this time last year.

now slowed significantly with a fall of 9% compared to the same time last year. HOUSE SALES Sales of family homes are down 6% with just 29 sales in the last three months. Compare that to the figure of 51 sales heading into winter, clearly showing how much the market has slowed. As sales have slowed, the heat has come out of price inflation with the current

UNIT SALES The market for units continues to weaken with sales down 11% and the median price down 16%. This segment is now entering its 15th month of consecutive declines with just eight sales in the past three months. With 14 new listings, the market is not denuded of stock, however buyer interest is cautious. The median price over the past three months, at $730,000, is down by a whopping $170,000, as compared to the peak of the market back in 2016, and at this time shows little signs of appreciating anytime soon. He was a member of the Devonport Silver Band and his first military remembrance engagement was in 1964, at the Takapuna Grammar School Anzac Day service. He is a member of the Territorial Force and since 1989 has played in the Band of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery, which is involved in Anzac Day services and performs regularly at Ryman Healthcare villages. Salmond wins prestigious award for a lifetime’s work Devonport architect Jeremy Salmond has been awarded the 2018 New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) Gold Medal in recognition of an outstanding career in heritage and conservation architecture. Over the last 30 years, Salmond has worked on many of New Zealand’s most significant heritage buildings. Those include the Stone Store in Kerikeri and Pompallier House in Russell; Auckland’s former Chief Post Office, War Memorial Museum and Art Gallery;

Ride-share scheme with million-dollar budget

Auckland Transport (AT) with help from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is funding a one-year trial of the EV ride-share scheme, as part of efforts to reduce traffic on Lake Rd running in and out of Devonport. The scheme was originally due to start in November, but no date has been set yet. Testing of the app used to book and deliver the service is still underway, an AT spokesman said. AT has received $1million from NZTA to fund the project. The ride-share shuttle would use three electric cars, which are already in AT’s fleet. In addition, AT has bought three vans at a cost of $80,000 each. AT will have to fund the costs of the project if it goes north of the $1 million mark. It is difficult to know how much the project would actually cost as it depended on “how

Devonport was regarded as the perfect place to trial the technology as there are only two ways out of the area – via the very congested Lake Road or on the ferry. “We [AT] also expect that by getting more people onto the ferry, we can reduce congestion in the area; and by giving people an alternative to driving to the terminal, we can free up parking spaces in the [Devonport] town centre.” Residents within three kilometres of the ferry terminal will be able nominate a pick-up spot for the on-demand service, using the AT Local app. Board member Mike Sheehy said: “Where it all comes unstuck is that each ride is subsidised by $14 per ride. If the ride-share works at its optimum, the subsidy will be $19,600.00 per week.”

I’ve interviewed a few 100-year-old Devonport residents over the years and, without fail, at some stage they offer their lengthy memories of shops and retailers that have come and gone in the village. ‘Remember when we had a Farmers in the main street?’ ‘What about the CD shop?’ Others recall the days when we had our own council offices. Many services have been lost in the name of progress or due to commercial changes such as the rise of malls and online shopping. The latest casualty is the Devonport Copy Shoppe, which operated in the main street for more than two decades, and was run for almost 20 years by Matt and Lynn Walker. Matt and Lynn are both at retirement age and facing health problems, but it’s sad that they have had to close the shop – its margins having grown so small they felt it was a waste of time trying to sell it. Over the years, home printers and the use of PDFs (which cut down the need for printing) have reduced the traffic at the shop. Matt likened the demise to the Post Office, which simply lost its core reason to be. Just as people are sending less mail, they are printing less. It’s still a great shame that another service has gone from

Yachtswoman goes solo in Coastal Classic Tamsin Worsley is an experienced yachtie, but took on a new challenge when she decided to sail the annual Auckland to Bay of Islands race single-handed. She tells Helen Vause about her 26 hours at the helm.

about being the first woman to do it. It was an individual challenge for me. “It was all about self-reliance and confidence in myself. It would be all up to me.” Worsley has spent hundreds of hours on the harbour and the Hauraki Gulf, and she’s crewed many times on the overnight haul to Russell. Her husband Phil has learned to sail under her guidance, and her 15-year-old son Josh has made many trips to Great Barrier Island under sail with his mum. No one doubted she could do it, but her solo sail in this year’s Coastal Classic was set to be a different sort of adventure. To find a suitable boat to race, Worsley turned to boat-sharing company YachtShare and chose Ora Rosa, a 36-foot J112 for her solo voyage. Her race preparations began many months in advance of the event. Looking back, she says there was more work involved than she’d anticipated: fitness training at the gym was essential in boosting strength and balance; getting safety gear and preparations sorted was a painstaking exercise, more so obviously for a solo sailor who needs to be attached to the boat all the way.

November 16, 2018 “Safety is a very big thing and it needs a lot of consideration,” says Worsley. “This is where sailing solo is different – it’s that safety detail. And when you’ve got it all set up you need to be mindful that you need to move around the boat in a very conscious way.” It was all about anticipation, preparation and organisation, she says. But you could throw in a good dollop of courage too. Undeterred by the routine procedures for ‘man overboard’, she laughs: “You just don’t want to fall in.”

“I moved as much as I could. I was in for a big day and really you just have to settle in and enjoy it.” She loved the light, fast boat she would be sailing and she was very confident in her own sailing ability, but she did have one disadvantage. Unlike many of the other boats competing, Worsley had no self-steering gear – the equipment that allows a sailor to set up autopilot and take a break from standing at the wheel. It gave an edge to the challenges that she faced once she was underway. When race day arrived on the Friday morning of Labour Weekend, Worsley was more excited than she was apprehensive. She’d made a number of oversight solo trips on Ora Rosa and she had terrific support from family, friends and sailors. But when she lined up for the start among 165 boats that morning, she was just out of bed and recovering from a chest infection.

“At one point I had thought I might not be going. I certainly was not in top form, but I had my antibiotics to take with me and I decided I was good enough to go.” The fleet took off in a good breeze. “Right from the start I knew the wind conditions were going to make this race much more difficult and a long haul. We were all beating up on the nose through the Tiri Channel and for the first four hours I couldn’t get off the helm at all. I moved as much as I could. I was in for a big day and really you just have to settle in and enjoy it. “It started to get dark as we were crossing Bream Bay. It was a beautiful night with a half moon and shooting stars. It’s different sailing at night, but you have to be paying close attention all the time.” Of course it gets a whole lot colder as night falls too, and hardly letting go of the helm, she wriggled into extra layers and a balaclava. Pretty much everything she needed had to be within reach of the wheel; food, fluids and antibiotics included. “I was very focused on trying to keep up speed and some of the time I was struggling to do that with the wind dropping off.” She wasn’t scared but she was challenged throughout the race. Calls from her husband and her son during that night were a welcome boost to her spirits. And her sister Amanda, a race veteran herself, regularly checked on progress. “D ay b re a k w a s a ve ry w e lc ome psychological lift, for sure”, Worsley says. In the daylight, she rounded the waters of spectacular Cape Brett, through the gap to Percy Island, under full sail with five other boats in sight. “I was needing to put the kite up but there was a really big roll and there was no way I could manage to get it up in the conditions. With the sun now up and beating down on her head, it was time for the very fatigued sailor to wriggle back out of those woollies. Once around the cape, the wind fell right

off. While some of the fleet appeared to be virtually parked by the calm, Worsley made the decision to sail out to the right, hoping to catch some wind. It wasn’t a successful move. The wind shifted, and she was well off course, losing time and losing the wind again. She was disappointed but still felt she’d made the right decision as she moved slowly towards the finish line off Russell – 26 and a half hours after the start gun. Her brother Matt – one of her very supportive advisers – had come in well ahead to win the solo division of the race. Despite the slow last leg, Worsley placed second, even though most, if not all, of her competition had the advantage of self-steering. Waiting at the grand old Duke of Marlborough Hotel on the Russell waterfront was a family group ready to celebrate with Worsley at proud mother Robin’s 84th birthday lunch. Worsley was exhausted mentally and physically, but delighted to have crossed the finish line and taken a top placing. But would she do it again? “I’d need some more time to consider whether I would want to do it again. This was a personal challenge for me. If I did do it, I would have self-steering gear so that I could be more competitive.” In her day job on dry land, Worsley is also very much a one-woman show. She is a performing poet for children, creating her own material and costumes for presentations to school groups. It is like no other job: “Sometimes I dress up like a pirate.” A favourite poem she’s penned is Old Man Wind: she shares with spellbound kids the havoc he can cause as he whistles around. It’s not hard to imagine there could be a few more verses written about the tricks he might be able to play on solo seafaring mothers seeking friendly breezes.
