Quake strengthening changes good news for Claystore An estimated $750,000 saving in earthquake strengthening costs has markedly increased the viability of upgrading the heritage Claystore workshop. Options to refurbish the building have been knocked around at Auckland Council for more than a decade and at one stage included a lift and expensive earth-

quake strengthening works on the building and its wall abutting Abbotsford Lane. But the lowering of earthquake-risk levels on many structures in the government’s new National Building Standards meant some expensive work was no longer required, said Claystore trustee and treasurer Martin Ford. Council had around $1 million budgeted

for the upgrade. The latest updates and options for the building are expected go before Devonport-Takapuna Local Board members at a workshop on 12 May. If given board sign-off, Claystore members hoped work would start this financial year, Ford said.
