Ride share sign-ups hit 500 More than 500 people have signed up for the AT Local Ride Share AP as of Tuesday morning as the Flagstaff went to press. In the week to Tuesday there had been 132 rides, an AT spokesman said. “The number is growing, yesterday alone
there was 42 rides,” he told the Flagstaff on Tuesday. “Word of mouth will be a big driver, and it’s only been going for about two weeks,” the spokesman said. The ride share scheme is under trial for one year.

With electric cars and vans now being trialled as subsidised public transport, electric ferries are perhaps the face of the future. Electric ferries are being increasingly used overseas, but generally on short trips due to limited horsepower and battery life. Auckland Transport (AT) group manager marketing and engagement Kevin Leith said the leaps in electric-transport technology had been massive over the last few years, and would continue. “It’s certainly going in that direction [electric or renewable transport options],” Leith said. AT is using three electric cars and three electric vans in its ride-share trial in Devonport. However, the number of vans it could choose from to operate its new service was limited, “although firms were telling us this would change over the next 12 months with more offerings coming on the market.” In terms of electric ferry fleets, durability and battery life are still an issue.
For example, an electric-ferry service at La Rochelle in France had two vessels – one crossing the estuary and the other charging. The logistics and cost of having one ferry sitting around, would be cost-prohibitive at the moment, Leith said.

Christmas lunch Holy Trinity style A free Christmas lunch is on offer at Holy Trinity Church again this year. Last year, more than 80 people of all ages and faiths sat down to a free Christmas lunch at the church. Dressed ham, desserts, starters, punch and even champagne were on the menu, which had been prepared by the church community. The lunch is the idea of local resident and churchgoer, Emily Morrow. She envisaged a lunch for those who were away from friends and family at Christmas. But word got around, and by the time Christmas Day arrived, it didn’t matter whether you had friends and family nearby or not. The lunch evolved into a lively and fun celebration of togetherness and community. UV SunSmart trial launches at Stanley Bay School

Over several days, all of the school’s 245 students went through the programme, which aims to teach primary and secondary school children about the risks of solar UV radiation and to discover for themselves the SunSmart strategies that can cut harmful UV exposure. Originally developed at the University of
Southern California, the approach is being trialled in New Zealand by Associate Professor Martin Allen from the University of Canterbury. Stanley Bay pupils were taken through the priniciples of ‘slip slop slap’ and the importance of shade, with the help of students from Takapuna Grammar and UV ‘dosimeters’, designed by Allen to gauge levels of harmful sun exposure.

DevonportProperty.nz Report — November 2018 A challenging property market heading into summer How the property market has turned in the past three months has caught many buyers and sellers by surprise. The traditionally hectic period leading up to Christmas sees a flood of new listings, and this year it was huge, with 82 properties listed in just three months, compared to 73 last year” that should say three months not five months. However, sales activity has not risen to meet this surge of new listings. In the past three months there were just 40 property sales as compared to 66 for the same time last year. This has resulted in the highest inventory of properties for sale with over 60 during November. Clearly, with this situation of an abundance of listings and slow sales, the market benefits buyers over sellers. This is flowing through to prices, which have slowed throughout 2018 and are now showing a 13% year-on-year decline.

The median price for houses sold in Devonport over the past three months was $1,607,500, that’s a 7% decline, representing a fall of $118,000 as compared to the same time last year, as sales volumes of traditional homes are down 18% over the same period. This somewhat more subdued market report to close off 2018 is a reflection of the fact that property markets regularly readjust both sales volume and price
levels as growth rates become unsustainable. Compared to five years ago, the median sale price of a Devonport house was $1.25m, and three years ago in 2015 it was $1.55m. The fact is that property prices had got ahead of themselves and this rebalancing in 2018 is healthy as it avoids the bursting of a property bubble. As to 2019, the key driver of the market will remain the cost of finance, which remains low. Access to finance remains tight, although recently announced changes to LVR rules will assist. The economy and immigration levels are likely to continue to push demand, but overall the market, is likely to start the new year much as it closes off the old year – with buyers in the driving seat. So club members were shocked to find it was stolen last month – most likely overnight on Saturday 24 November. Club Captain Allister Irving said the theft of the defibrillator was deeply disappointing, “especially with its history”. “It could be needed at any time, we just don’t know.” Irving, and club maintenance officer Hamish Walsh, suspect kids may have been responsible, as there doesn’t appear to be a market for stolen defibrillators. However, after a few days and searches near the club failed to turn up the device, after the club reported the theft to police last Wednesday. If anyone sees the defibrillator, or knows where it might be, contact the club on 0800 105 228.

Devonport medical movements The old Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) building in Victoria Rd is being lined up for a new medical centre. It is understood Anne St Medical had wanted to move into the BNZ premises and now Green Cross Health a major healthcare provider has also been looking at the site. If Green Cross were to move in, it would be making a substantial investment including
a new pharmacy. The Flagstaff has been told by a patient that Anne St Medical was expanding, and potentially moving to the former BNZ building. When contacted on Monday an Anne St spokesperson said: “We are hoping to move yes, we are hoping to expand yes…but nothing has been confirmed yet.” • Meanwhile, long-time Devonport GP Grant Smith has sold his interest in Devonport Family Medicine to Dr Pieter Veenhuijsen. Smith will continue as a GP in the meantime.

Wynard St changes unnecessary
Just what is going on with the mess at the top of Wynyard St? Is it another waste of ratepayers’ money in making an unneeded pedestrian crossing as Mary Taylor suggests (Flagstaff 30 November) or has somebody – AT? – decided to make the street one-way? If so, who was informed? Where was the due process? A one-way system would be an unmitigated disaster and create further congestion at all the

I was looking forward to using the new 807 bus, from Devonport Wharf to Cheltenham, when coming home from the city. But instead of meeting the ferry from Auckland, it is scheduled to depart just before the boat gets in. No wonder there are hardly any passengers on it.

Jingo! Buzzword Bingo spells out school lingo Belmont Intermediate teacher Jo Hilario’s YouTube videos have been used across the country to break down the communication barrier between teachers and parents. Buzz Word Bingo is a YouTube channel, set up by Hilario, dedicated to explaining ‘teacher jargon’ in a series of two-minute videos. “The idea primarily came about from parent-teacher talks about learning,” says Hilario. “I saw how busy parents were, so getting everyone together in a room was kind of impossible. I thought, how could I make this accessible?” Hilario created her first video, explaining teacher judgements, and shared it on the NZ Teachers (Primary) Facebook page. In just 24 hours the video had more than 1,000 views. “I started receiving suggestions and positive feedback and thought hey, this is going pretty well. I decided to keep it going for 12 months, and will post a video every or every other week,” says Hilario. The channel has three videos so far and Hilario has received a range of positive feedback not only from parents and teachers within the local community, but also across the country. Chalk and Cheese
By their own admission, Julie and Ian Williams were going around in circles trying to find inspiration for their new kitchen; that was until they came across the team at Kitchens By Design. Then everything became clear. Could you tell me a little about you and your family, and also about your home – in particular, describe the existing kitchen before the makeover? The existing kitchen was the original in a 80s-style house that we’d been living in for two years. We always knew a new kitchen was on the shopping list, and we’d got to the point where it was looking old, and our girls were getting bigger – we weren’t a family with little kids any more. We needed to do something; the kitchen wasn’t working for us, but we didn’t know what we wanted or where to go.
How did you come across Kitchens By Design, and why did you choose them to design your new kitchen? We found them online, but it was their showroom that clinched it for us. It was very impressive – chalk and cheese compared to the others we visited. We started speaking to Jane [Fergusson], one of the designers there, and she immediately got who we were and what we were trying to achieve. We clicked straight away. Jane made it easy for us to visualise what our new kitchen could look like. What was your brief to the designer, and how did it evolve? There wasn’t much of a brief, really (laughs). We told her that we liked open shelving, and that we wanted a bit of wood in the new kitchen, and also somewhere to have a casual meal. Jane then asked us lots of question about how we lived, cooked and used the kitchen. She was the only one who did that of all the people we spoke to. Jane then came up with three different concepts – one was the original footprint, upgraded, the other was a partial change, the third was a complete change with all the bells and whistles… and that’s the one we went for. What are the most memorable moments of the process? Seeing the mood board for the first time, with all the samples of colours and materials, that was exciting. Also, choosing the benchtop material, then selecting each slab individually before they were templated, so we could see where the veining would appear on the final benchtop. That was a special service.
What are your favourite parts of the new kitchen? We both really love the bamboo breakfast bar – that was Jane’s choice. We never thought of using bamboo, but it gave us the touch of wood we asked for. It’s also a very durable and hard-wearing material, which is ideal for the counter top. The window seat is wonderful (Julie). It’s completely changed how I use the kitchen, because I can now lounge in the kitchen. Our daughters can hang out there, too. It’s great in the morning because it catches all the sun. We also love our new scullery.
How did you find the experience of working with Kitchens By Design? In a word… easy. Jane was great to communicate with, and she listened and ran with any ideas we had. Everything was so well planned out – she just instinctively knew where everything should go. Also, the whole team at Kitchens By Design fought our corner through the whole process, ensuring everything was done properly and we got exactly what we wanted, which saved us time and energy. They were definitely value for money. In the end it comes down to trust. We trusted Jane and went with what she recommended, and it worked out really well. The kitchen speaks for itself, just look at it!

New Wynyard St intersection raises eyebrows The new Wynyard/Clarence Sts upgrade generated numerous calls of complaint to the Flagstaff and local body politicians. Many people were worried that Wynyard St is being turned into a oneway street. Plans seen by the Flagstaff show there is no one-way planned, but turning in and out will need to be undertaken with care. Devonport-Takapuna Local Board member Grant Gillon said: “It does seem a bit tight. But then the ‘stop’ for northbound/eastbound on Wynyard is back from the crossing, so cars shouldn’t be blocking the exit/entrance where it intersects with Clarence. But I wonder if they will stop that far back in practice. “It seems as if the pedestrian island is so wide as to protect parked cars. “I wonder if the width is a problem, and if a narrower pedestrian island and the removal of one of the carpark spaces might make turning from Clarence into Wynyard a little safer,” Gillon said.

Kāinga Pāho Tēnā koutou katoa The festive season is upon us and that’s always a good time to reflect on the year that’s been. 2018 has been very eventful for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei on the North Shore, with work getting underway on our housing developments. The preparatory earthworks are coming to an end on both Roberts Avenue and stage one of Hillary Crescent, and we are continuing to move the old Defence Force houses off-site. In readiness for the next stage of Hillary, we will take possession of another 40 Navy houses on 1 February 2019. Most of them are two-bedroom homes and we have started offering these for sale to give people

Drone infringement sparks military police call-out A drone spotted flying over Devonport Naval Base sparked a call-out from the military police. A defence spokesman said: “ There was a recent case of an RPAS [Remotely piloted aircraft system] flown over a New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) area at the North Yard at Devonport Naval Base. “Military police located the pilot of the RPAS and explained that NZDF areas are
restricted areas and entry is prohibited unless authority is given by the commanding officer. As such, it is unlawful for such aircraft to fly over NZDF property.” It is also unlawful to take photographs on NZDF property without permission, the defence spokesman said. “Remotely piloted aircraft systems, or drones, are becoming an increasingly popular pastime for aviation enthusiasts. Devonstock set to rock Windsor Reserve again Local band Masonic Silk is one of six acts to play at the Devonstock music festival on December 9. Other bands include SKILAA, Munkhouse, Daffodils, and solo artists Ben Glanfield and Gretel. Organised by the Devonport Youth Forum, Devonstock has been going for more than 10 years. The free festival takes place from 2pm to 6pm.
ThE NAVy COmmuNiTy NEwSLETTER Change and growth for our Navy in 2018 2018 saw the decommissioning of two vessels, HMNZS Endeavour and HMNZS Manawanui, both successfully sold, and the departure of HMNZS Te Kaha to Canada to start her Frigate Systems Upgrade. Meanwhile, construction is proceeding steadily on Aotearoa, the Navy’s largest-ever ship, due to be launched in April next year in Korea. The design of her badge was turned into a very successful competition for the public. The Navy is looking forward to the arrival next year of the new Dive and Hydrographic vessel (also to be called Manawanui), and Te Kaha’s return from Canada. Te Kaha’s upgrade meant frigate HMNZS Te Mana effectively became the champion of naval combat culture this year, and under Commander Lisa Hunn she embraced that mission with a passion, building up to her six-month international deployment. Her ship and crew were crowned “Top Gun” for the most accurate gunnery at the world’s largest maritime exercise, Rim of the Pacific – a first for a New Zealand ship. For the second year running, New Zealand supported Fiji in protecting its Exclusive Economic Zones, sending HMNZS Taupo and HMNZS Otago to patrol its waters with Fijian fisheries officers. Otago continued its good works across the Western Pacific, supporting other small nations with fisheries protection. This year, we dedicated a Seasprite helicopter to a six-day, 18-school tour, introducing over 13,000 students to the career of Naval Aviation. We hosted the Minister of Conservation, Eugenie Sage, to the sub-Antarctic Islands this year as HMNZS Wellington supported scientists and ecologists in their conservation efforts on these remote islands. It included an emergency dash to rescue an ill conservation worker from Campbell Island. We also assisted GNS

Science with volcanic surveys around White Island, and a variety of Government partners and universities in ongoing scientific and conservation work on the Kermadec Islands. At Devonport, we opened our Seamanship Training Aid Facility over the water. The floating barge, fitted with cranes, decks, rails, lines and ladders, provides real on-the-water training for our sailors, before they post to ships. We recruited, trained and graduated 250 young New Zealanders for a career in the Navy. And this month, Devonport Naval Base welcomed Chief of Navy Rear Admiral David Proctor, reporting for duty, and farewelled Rear Admiral John Martin following his three-year term. Roll on 2019.
