Not so fast: AT still keen on wider low-speed zones

Larger low-speed zones around some Devonport peninsula schools are back on Auckland Transport’s agenda. AT wants to impose 40km/h limits in three zones in Stanley Bay-Devonport, Belmont and Hauraki. It was earlier forced to remove 30km/h

zones introduced locally from mid-2022, when, in 2024, the government issued a national directive against blanket speed restrictions around schools. These were replaced with a restricted speed area within 150m of school gates, with 30km/h applying only around school start

and finish times. AT is now revisiting speed zones in Auckland that have previously been through consultation and won local board support. This includes a combined zone for Stanley Bay and St Leo’s Primary schools, and zones To page 11
