Cold comfort shown for divisive Korean statue plan

A bid to erect a controversial statue in the Korean Garden on Barrys Pt Reserve, Takapuna, has been turned down by the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board Plans for the statue, which revived painful memories of the treatment of Korean women during World War II, drew 672 submissions, including near-equal numbers

from Japanese and Korean community members. In all, 57 per cent of individuals and 15 of 20 organisations were against the Korean Garden Trust’s application to install the statue of a Korean “comfort woman” on Auckland Council land it leases. Concerns cited included inflaming community tensions, political interpretations of

history and whether the statue was appropriate in a New Zealand setting, said a report on the submissions tabled by council staff.
