Verbey wrote this piece after reading Vladimir Nabokov's novel Invitation to a beheading. He said about his piece: "In this short orchestral piece which I wrote after reading the novel, a reserved, somewhat grim tone is dominant. In a slow tempo a melody is brought to it's grave. Shadowy percussion try to delay this process a bit, but it is of no avail; after some last orchestral belches we end up exactly where we started."
