ANTHONY FIUMARA WELLE OF MERCY 4 MARIAN ANTIPHONS FOR MIXED CHOIR (SATB) AND STRING ORCHESTRA 2010/2018
WELLE OF MERCY Welle of Mercy was originally commissioned by the Dutch Gregorian Festival in 2010 and written for Schola Maastricht and the Lundi Bleu string orchestra. In 2018 I made a new version for mixed choir (SATB), commissioned by Anthony Zielhorst and Chamber Choir Ad Parnassum, with a number of revisions.
Musically, Welle of Mercy largely speaks for itself but I want to amplify on two of the antiphons. The second part, Regina Caeli, could not have been composed without Blue Lines by Massive Attack. It is a tribute to the producer of that album, Jonathan Peter Sharp (Jonny Dollar) who died far too young. Bizarrely, we share our birth date.
In addition to the text of the Marian antiphon in the fourth part I have included a fragment of The Canterbury Tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer. One of his stories, The Prioress’s Tale, features a little boy who sings Alma Redemptoris Mater every day on his way home from school. During one of those homeward walks the boy is done in by a Non-Christian. When his mother finds his lifeless body it miraculously starts to sing the Alma Redemptoris Mater. He tells that Mary appeared to him in a vision, put a grain on his tongue and that he will continue to sing until it is removed:
“My throte is kut unto my nekke boon,” “My throat is cut unto my neck bone,” Seyde this child, “and as by wey of kynde Said this child, “and in the natural course of events I sholde have dyed, ye, longe tyme agon. I should have died, yea, a long time ago. But Jesu Crist, as ye in bookes fynde, But Jesus Christ, as you find in books, Wil that his glorie laste and be in mynde, Desires that his glory should last and be in mind, And for the worship of his Mooder deere, And for the worship of his Mother dear This welle of mercy, This welle of mercy, Yet may I synge O Alma loude and cleere.” Yet can I sing O Alma loud and clear.”
“My throte is kut unto my nekke boon,” “Mijn nek is doorgesneden tot aan mijn nekwervel,” Seyde this child, “and as by wey of kynde Zei het kind, “en normaal gesproken I sholde have dyed, ye, longe tyme agon. Zou ik al lang geleden gestorven zijn. But Jesu Crist, as ye in bookes fynde, Maar Jezus Christus, zoals je in boeken kunt lezen, Wil that his glorie laste and be in mynde, Wil dat zijn glorie voortduurt en herinnerd wordt And for the worship of his Mooder deere, En ter aanbidding van zijn dierbare Moeder, This welle of mercy, Die bron van genade, Yet may I synge O Alma loude and cleere.”
