SCORING
See the Sky About to Rain was commissioned by philharmonie zuidnederland. First performance by philharmonie zuidnederland and Duncan Ward, conductor, in Theater aan het Vrijthof, Maastricht.
Percussion (3 performers):
My studio is on the top floor of my house. Through the windows I look out over other buildings in the city, but I mainly see the clouds moving through the sky every day. I am always impressed by the constant and steady change of their shapes and colors. The heavy clouds are beautiful, far away and at the same time close, impressive and timeless—every time I look at them. Their silent floating in a motionless firmament seems to be a big part of their strength. To me they represent the passage of time and the unpredictability of the future.

PERCUSSION SET UP The percussion players should be evenly spaced behind the strings, as far apart from each other as possible.
Time passes differently for different beings and things. Like the clouds our lives are short and fleeting. The past months have made that clearer than ever. Yet we always keep hope—as if we are looking at the sky, waiting for the redeeming rain.
TOELICHTING Mijn studio bevindt zich op de bovenste etage van mijn huis. Door de ramen kijk ik uit over andere gebouwen in de stad, maar ik zie iedere dag weer vooral de wolken door de lucht bewegen. Ik ben altijd weer onder de indruk van de voortdurende gestage verandering van hun vormen en kleuren. De zware wolken zijn mooi, ver weg en tegelijkertijd dichtbij, indrukwekkend en tijdloos—iedere keer als ik er naar kijk. Hun stille zweven in een bewegingloos firmament lijkt een groot deel van hun kracht te zijn. Voor mij representeren ze het vertrijken van de tijd en de onvoorspelbaarheid van de toekomst. Tijd verloopt verschillend voor verschillende wezens en dingen. Zoals de wolken zijn onze levens zijn kort en vluchtig. De afgelopen maanden hebben dat meer dan ooit duidelijk gemaakt. Toch houden we altijd weer hoop. Alsof we naar de lucht kijken, wachtend op een verlossende regenbui. Anthony Fiumara August 18, 2020
