ANTHONY FIUMARA SOULING FOR CARILLON 2015

The carillon is an instrument of the street. For centuries, high in their towers carilloneurs have been playing the bells that could be heard by all residents of the city.
Het carillon is het instrument van de straat. Hoog in hun torens bespelen beiaardiers al eeuwenlang de klokken die voor alle bewoners van de stad hoorbaar zijn.
It was this street music I was thinking about, while composing Souling for Joost van Balkom and Bosch Requiem 2015. What kind of music would have been sounding centuries ago, in the short days of November around All Saints’ Day and All Souls?
Aan die straatmuziek dacht ik toen ik Souling componeerde voor Joost van Balkom en Bosch Requiem 2015. Wat voor muziek zou er eeuwen geleden geklonken hebben, in de korte novemberdagen rond Allerheiligen en Allerzielen?
Since the early Middle Ages it used to be customary to ring bells on the night of All Saints: those sounds were thought to bring joy to the poor souls in purgatory.
Sinds de vroege Middeleeuwen was het de gewoonte klokken te luiden in de nacht van Allerheiligen: die klanken zouden de arme zielen in het vagevuur vreugde brengen.
Also linked to purgatory was the tradition of ‘souling’, in which the poor of the city walked the streets during All Souls. They would sing ‘souling songs’ for the souls of the dead, in exchange for ‘soul cakes’ — alms, specially baked for the occasion. Each piece of bread helped to buy the dead a bit of respite from the suffering of purgatory.
Ook met het vagevuur verbonden was de traditie van ‘souling’, waarbij de armen van de stad tijdens Allerzielen door de straten trokken. Zij zongen dan ‘souling songs’ voor het het zielenheil van de doden, in ruil voor ‘soul cakes’ — speciaal voor die gelegenheid gebakken aalmoezen. Voor elk stuk brood aan de armen werd een ziel verlost uit het vuur van de hel.
The stretched out bass line in Souling might stem from that distant past, while you could hear the agile voice above it as a continuous litany.
De langgerekte baslijn in Souling zou zomaar uit dat verre verleden kunnen komen, terwijl je de beweeglijke stem daarboven zou kunnen horen als een onafgebroken litanie. Anthony Fiumara, 16 mei 2015
