At the beginning of 2022, I was approached by NTR Saturday Matinee for a short composition piece in honor of the 750th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam. During the past two years I focused on my work process and found different ways to explore the city and its story. Although I studied in Amsterdam for a year, it did not feel familiar anymore. So, for inspiration, I observed Amsterdam once more in three ways: - Visual: what does the city look like? Amsterdam is full of beautiful canal houses that were built with a lot of care, love and attention. Although the houses do not look the same, together they perfectly well. The skyline consists of a fascinating variety of alternating shapes and heights. Each building is an individual in its looks, and yet there is harmony. - Sounding: how does the city sound? During my work process I took many walks through the city. One of my conclusions is that you miss a lot of sounds when you are walking and listening at the same time, but when you record the sounds of the streets and listen back, you also hear other sounds you may never noticed during these walks. I was struck by the hustle and bustle on the streets and the different languages that were used: in addition to tourism, the city has 178 nationalities as residents. No nationality and language are the same. I therefore see Amsterdam as a kind of heaven, an ideal world where different people live side by side in harmony. -Content-related Over the centuries, Amsterdam has been a safe haven for many people, especially for artists, writers and philosophers who came from all directions and were embraced by their new city. This assignment also brought me back to my first visit to Amsterdam in November 1998. It was a misty, enchanting autumn day that started for me at the waterside, het IJ. Ships suddenly appeared from the mist, accompanied by the dark sounds of a foghorn. During my walk I got the strong feeling that the air, the atmosphere and the environment were from other times. The hustle and bustle on the streets, the many people walking through the city in amazement and talking to each other, the oasis of the Vondelpark and all that in the middle of a typical canal pattern full of special houses. And then there was the Rijksmuseum. I didn't believe my eyes what I was seeing, as if I went back into history. It was a special building that I had never seen before, and one that certainly could not be fully visited in one day. This discovery was so special for me that I actually did not want to see anything else. The walk suddenly ended for me in a burst of amazement, by this stately national monument. To this day the museum still makes a great impression on me and since I have visited the building several times in recent years. Hence the title ‘rIJks’ which refers to the water ‘IJ’ but also to my first encounter with the Rijksmuseum. The varying font sizes create a shape that resembles the rooftop of a canal house, in addition if you look closely the ‘I’,’J’ and part of the ‘k’ form the letter ‘m’ of Mokum, the nickname for Amsterdam, meaning ‘safe haven’ or ‘city’, derived from the Yiddish language. My aforementioned inspirations can be heard in 'rIJks’, a title that has several meanings for this composition. It is a musical walk-through Amsterdam in which as a common thread I have chosen my own amazement during my first encounter with this metropolis as guideline. I would like to emphasize that the above sources of inspiration are personal, and that music as an abstract form of art leads its own life and can have a different translation or meaning for others.
