'Kom, over de zeeën' ('Come over the seas' / 'Vem sobre os mares') was commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The Portugese title is a line from a poem by Fernando Pessoa ('Fragment of an Ode') in which the longing for the night is expressed. The work forms a dialogue with countless memories, not just of the three previous orchetral pieces in this quadriptych, but also to other journeys in time.
