Complete Solution Protect+ enclosures are easily configured and suitable for both new build homes and the upgrade/refurbishment of existing properties. All enclosures now come with a factory fitted Type 2 SPD to protect electronic equipment connected within the property from transient over voltages. Main Switch enclosures fitted with RCBOs and AFDDs on individual circuits provide superior protection, convenience and flexibility for occupants. High Integrity enclosures incorporating a 100A main switch plus 2 no 100A 30mA Type A RCDs provide a cost effective solution where budget dictates.

Surge Protection Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) redirect transient overvoltages, protecting valuable electronic devices and appliances from premature aging, damage or destruction. The SPD is factory fitted after the main switch and fed with a standard busbar with Neutral and Earth cables connected. Each device is rated at 100A and incorporates a visual indication window for normal operation or fault status. Taking up only one module, the SPD does not require a separate MCB for protection, relying on the upstream DNO fuse.

Enclosure Configurations Mains Switch Enclosures Depending on the enclosure size chosen, allows from 5 up to a maximum of 19 independent cicruits to be connected. Intended for use with RCBOs and/or AFDD/RCBOs, each circuit is individually protected against both overload and earth leakage to prevent nuisance tripping originating from other circuits, providing the safest circuit protection solution. A 100A rated Type 2 SPD is factory fitted and utilises the standard busbar terminal connection as all other devices.

High Integrity Enclosures Depending on the enclosure size chosen a number of independent circuits can be accommodated after the Main Switch with remaining circuits protected by two 100A 30mA Type A RCDs and MCBs. Enclosures are easily configured by sliding RCDs along the DIN rail depending on installation requirements. A 100A rated Type 2 SPD is factory fitted and utilises the standard busbar terminal connection as all other devices. Independent circuits using RCBOs or AFDD/RCBOs lend themselves to safety critical (e.g. safety alarms) and high risk (e.g. EV Charge Points) circuits, avoiding nuisance tripping whilst maximising protection. Circuits protected by MCBs should be distributed across the two RCDs evenly with consideration given to circuit design. For example, downstairs and upstairs lighting circuits should be controlled by different RCDs to avoid a complete lighting outage if an earth leakage fault trips the connected RCD, cutting the supply to all the other connected circuits.

*

* Max independent devices using standard supplied busbar.

MCBs Miniature Circuit Breakers protect domestic circuits against overloads and short circuits. B curve devices are traditionally more suited to domestic installations where switching surges are low or non existant and trip between 3 and 5 times full load current. C curve devices have become more relevant for some modern appliances/fittings where greater switching circuits may be present and will trip between 5 and 10 times full load current. • • •

18th Edition Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2018+A2:2022

Surge Protection Devices Reg 443.4.1

Protection against transient over voltages shall be provided where the consequence caused by the over voltage could result in: •

Serious injury to, or loss of human life

•

Significant financial or data loss

For all other cases, SPDs shall be provided unless the owner of the installation declares it is not required due to any loss or damage being tolerable, and they accept the risk of damage to equipment and any consequential loss.

RCD & RCBO Selection Reg 531.3.2/3

UNWANTED TRIPPING Residual current protective devices shall be selected and erected such as to limit the risk of unwanted tripping. The following should be considered: (ii) The use of RCBOs for individual final circuits in residential premises. (iii) In order to avoid unwanted tripping by protective conductor currents and/or earth leakage currents, the accumulation of such currents downstream of the RCD shall not be more than 30% of the rated residual operating current.

RCD TYPE RCD type AC shall only be used to serve fixed equipment, where it is known that the load current contains no DC components.

NOTE: Examples of fixed equipment with a load current containing no DC components include but not limited to electric heating appliances, and/or simple filament lighting neither containing electronic components.

14

t: 01582 544 544 | e: sales.ce@deta.co.uk | w: deta.co.uk

Arc Fault Detection Devices Reg 421.1.7

Arc fault detection devices (AFDD) conforming to BS EN 62606 shall be provided for single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket-outlets with a rated current not exceeding 32A in: •

Higher Risk Residential Buildings (HRRB)

•

Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO)

•

Purpose-built student accomodation

•

Care Homes

For all other premises, the use of AFDDs conforming to BS EN 62606 is recommended for single-phase AC final circuits supplying socket-outlets not exceeding 32A. Where used, AFDDs shall be placed at the origin of the circuit to be protected. The use of AFDDs does not obviate the need to apply one or more measures provided in other clauses in BS7671.

RCD Testing Reg 543.8

Previously, effectiveness under 643.7 and 643.8 was verified where the RCD disconnects within 40ms when tested at a current equal to or higher than five times its rated residual operating current. This has now been aligned with 643.7 and 643.8 and the new regulations are as follows: The verification of the effectiveness of the measures applied for additional protection is fulfilled by visual inspection and testing. Where RCDs are required for additional protection, the effectiveness of automatic disconnection of supply by RCDs shall be verified using suitable test equipment according to BS EN 61557-6 (see Regulations 643.1) to confirm that the relevant requirements of Chapter 41 are met. NOTE: Regardless of RCD Type, effectiveness is deemed to have been verified where an RCD disconnects within the time stated below with an alternating current tested at rated residual operating current (lΔn): •

For general non delay type, 300ms maximum

•

For delay ‘S’ type RCD, between 130ms minimum and 500ms maximum

RCD Protection Reg 411.3.3/4

Exceptions are now detailed requiring a risk assessment so certain socket circuits can be excluded, i.e. freezers, IT server rooms and control rooms. Outdoor lighting accessible by the public should have RCD protection. Reference is now made to where ‘ordinary persons’ having access to sockets, these shall be RCD protected. Where ‘competent/trained personnel’ are the only people accessing an area, i.e. control room, then RCDs can be omitted.
