We were tasked with reimagining the Harrye B. Lyons Design Library as a vibrant, collaborative hub that meets the diverse needs of students, faculty, staff, and the greater community.

Our proposals focus on cultivating spaces that foster connection, inspiration, wellness, and learning, and positioning the library as the heart of the College of Design and a destination for wider audiences.

Visual Identity

Our primary motif is inspired by the decorative symbols that can be found on the
domed ceilings of the Design Library. It’s an ode to the natural light that the library
is known for as well as the newer, more expansive offerings of the library.

The yellow, orange, and aqua colors from our primary palette are sourced from the NC State color palette. The purple is our addition to represent the College of Design’s unique identity.

Our secondary color palette is constructed with pastel tints of our primary colors.

Roboto Roboto Slab

Our typefaces are Roboto Slab and Roboto. These fonts match NC State’s official branding guide, creating an association between the Design Library and the larger NC State identity. Roboto Slab is to be used for signage and headings, as seen on our signs and in our logo. Roboto should be used for all other secondary or body text.

Dynamic Branding

We have designed a dynamic branding system that has the ability to adapt to different viewing contexts. Instead of pasting an identical logo onto every piece of branded material, we carry the main logo icon, color palette, and typefaces of our visual identity through all of our branded materials and apply the same style.

The allows the library’s visual identity to be flexible yet distinct with uniting consistent core elements.

We want it to feel less like a traditional library and more like the design experience it is.
