Årdal nasjonalparkkommune

Årdal kommune ligg plassert mellom den mektige Sognefjorden og Vest-Jotunheimen, med bratte fjell og djupe dalar og fjordar. Årdal National Park municipality

Årdal municipality is located between the mighty Sognefjord and West-Jotunheimen, with steep mountains and deep valleys and fjords. Årdal is one of two main gateways into Jotunheimen National Park and parts of the protected area lies within the municipality borders. In 2020, Årdal received status as a National Park municipality. Being an official National Park municipality, Årdal is committed to cater for visitors wanting to experience Jotunheimen and surrounding areas, and at the same time protect the nature and values that follows the Norwegian Environmental Agency recommendations.

Jotunheimen National Park is home to the tallest mountains in Norway – with Galdhøpiggen as the highest peak. The National Park is known as a popular destination for traditional outdoor recreation, hiking, mountain climbs, fishing, and hunting. Tindevegen

Tindevegen is the mountain road between Årdal and Turtagrø (32 km) and the shortest route when travelling between Bergen and Trondheim. This tourist road links Årdal to Luster and the Sognefjell National Tourist Route.

Tindevegen is usually open from May to mid-October, depending on the weather and driving conditions.

The mountain road takes you through some magnificent scenery between the beautiful peaks of Jotunheimen, offering many fine viewpoints. Just a short walk from the road, you get a panoramic view of the Hurrungane peaks and the Store Skagastøls-tind Mountain in the east, and the inner reaches of the Sognefjord and Skjolden in the west.

Tindevegen is a toll road, admitting private cars, camper vans and caravans (max length: 10 m).

Utladalen

- a treasure trove of nature trails for those who enjoy walking/hiking

Experience cascading waterfalls and picturesque mountain farms. Visit the Utladalen nasjonalparksenter in Skåri, where coffee and waffles are on offer while you take in the drama of the unique landscape.

You can visit the centre’s exhibition and view a film to learn about the valley’s history and adventurous climbs in the past.

If you wish to experience the valleys of Western Norway, from the valley floor down below to the highest mountain peaks, Årdal has much to offer. Both Årdal Trekking Association and the Norwegian Trekking Association offer a network of well-marked trails, colour-coded according to the level of difficulty. You are sure to find a trail that suits you. You can enjoy a simple walk to, for example, Vetti farm, or you can choose longer hikes and even climb the highest peak to get a bird’s eye view of the magnificent Sognefjord.

The mountains increase in height as you approach Jotunheimen in the east. By using Årdal or Utladalen as a base, you will have many options to explore some wonderful trails. En route, you will definitely find it worth your while to visit Utladalen nasjonalparksenter, to view the exhibitions and learn about the natural environment and the cultural history of Western Jotunheimen.

In Utladalen, you have the option of following short or long trails, covering the whole distance or walking only part of the trail. The possibilities are endless! Some of the walks are suitable for the whole family, for example the walk up to Avdalen farm.

Those wanting more of a challenge in Årdal can walk to Kvitingsmorki or Kvernli, or take the Hjelledal valley walk. These walks take you through some steep terrain and require that you are physically fit and have some experience of mountain walking.

I Utladalen kan du gå korte og lange turar, eller delar av ein lang tur om du ynskjer det. Mulegheitene er mange! Det finst óg fleire turar for heile familien, for eksempel opp til Avdalen Gard.

Ynskjer du litt meir utfordring, kan du ta turen til Kvitingsmorki, Kvernli eller gå Hjelledalsrunden. Dette er turar med nokså bratt terreng som krev litt meir erfaring og god fysisk form.

Avdalen Mountain Farm is beautifully situated in the valley of Utladalen, above the majestick Avdal waterfall. The farm and the cultural landscape has been restored in later years.

Avdal Farm has a cafè and offers summer accommodation, breakfast and dinner. 30 beds, shower and drying-room.

Avdalen fjellgard ligg vakkert til i Utladalen, like ovanfor den storslagne Avdalsfossen. Fråflytta i 1962 og resturert frå 1991 i regi av Årdal Turlag.

I dag framstår garden som flott restaurert av alle hus og kulturlandskapet. Vert drifta av eiga stifting.

The Vettisfossen waterfall & viewpoint

Vettifossen is the tallest protected waterfall in Northern Europe with a free fall of 275 metres. Vettifossen has been named as Norway’s most beautiful waterfall, and for good reason! The most common way of reaching the waterfall is by travelling to Vetti Farm via “Folkevegen”, which translates as the Road of the People and is named as such due to it having been built by “the people” on a voluntary basis. From Vetti Farm a path will take you the rest of the way to the waterfall.

Følg Folkevegen innover Utladalen frå parkeringa på Hjelle heilt til du kjem til Vetti Gard. Vegen kryssar elva Utla fleire stader, og det er mange fossar og flott kulturlandskap å sjå heile vegen innover dalen. Vettisfossen med sine 275 meter i fritt fall vart kåra til Noregs vakraste foss for nokre år sidan, og har vore verna sidan 1924. Fossen er eit imponerande syn! Når du kjem til Vetti Gard får du to val: anten å gå til toppen av fossen ved å følgja stien til høgre i stiskiljet, eller du kan gå inn til foten av fossen ved å følgja stien til venstre.

Deep in the wild and beautiful landscape of Utladalen you will find the Utladalen National Park Centre – the only national park visitor centre in Norway located inside a protected area. This is where your journey into Utladalen and Jotunheimen begins. In June 2025, a new exhibition opens in the old barn, offering engaging nature interpretation for all ages, with a focus on conservation, cultural landscapes, and biodiversity. What makes this valley unique is the gradient stretching from the highest alpine peaks of Jotunheimen, down through glaciers and rivers, all the way to the Sognefjord. You are in the “valley of waterfalls,” where the mighty Vettisfossen plunges from the mountainside. But remember – you are a guest in nature: Keep your dog on a leash, respect the wildlife and leave no trace.

Midt inne i det ville og vakre landskapet i Utladalen finn du Utladalen nasjonalparksenter – det einaste besøkssenteret for nasjonalpark i landet som ligg inne i sjølve verneområdet. Her startar du turen inn i Utladalen og Jotunheimen. I 2025 opna ei ny utstilling for store og små inne i den gamle fjøsen, med naturformidling, kulturlandskap og biologisk mangfald i fokus. Det som er spesielt i dette dalføret er gradienten som strekker seg heilt frå dei høgste, alpine toppane i Jotunheimen, nedover brefalla og elvene som renn nedover til Sognefjorden. Du er i “fossane sin dal” her, der mektige Vettisfossen kastar seg utfor fjellsida. Men hugs – her er du gjest i naturen: Hald difor hunden din i band, vis omsyn til dyrelivet og rydd opp etter deg.

Take your family to Dagsturhytta in Årdal

Familietur til Dagsturhytta i Årdal

Moakamben with Dagsturhytta cabin is an accessible hiking destination for the whole family. Årdal got its own «day trip cabin» in 2019, and the hike to get there is especially popular for families with children. The local library has organized a library inside the cabin, with books about nature and children`s books. Everything is in place for the whole family to enjoy a great day outdoors. The view from the cabin is also very nice, with Årdalsvatnet and Bøttejuv to look at.

Moakamben med Dagsturhytta er eit lett tilgjengeleg turmål for heile familien. Årdal fekk si eiga dagsturhytte i 2019, og turen dit er spesielt populær for barnefamiliar. Årdal bibliotek har laga til eit bibliotek inni hytta, med både naturbøker og barnebøker.

Alt ligg til rette for at heile familien får ein fin dag på tur. Utsynet frå hytta kan ein heller ikkje klaga på, med Årdalsvatnet og Bøttejuv rett i glaninga.

The historic road from Sletterust to Tusenmeteren, also known as Tunnelvegen, is a spectacular cycling route. Located over 1000 meters above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Hurrungane peaks, Bøttejuvet gorge, and the Utladalen valley before plunging down toward Øvre Årdal in a thrilling descent with several sharp hairpin turns. This is an adventure for experienced cyclists seeking a truly unique ride.

The road is narrow and unsecured, with a rough surface and a dark tunnel – a bike light is recommended. Keep close to the mountainside, and walk your bike if you feel unsafe. The route is prone to rockfall and is not maintained, so proceed with caution, especially in wet conditions.

Den historiske vegen frå Sletterust til Tusenmeteren, også kalla Tunnelvegen, er ei spektakulær sykkelrute. Vegen ligg på over 1000 moh og byr på panoramautsikt mot Hurrungane, Bøttejuvet og Utladalen, før den knekk nedover mot Øvre Årdal med ei utforkøyring for minneboka med fleire krappe hårnålsvingar. Dette er ei oppleving for erfarne syklistar som er ute etter ei heilt spesiell oppleving.

Vegen er smal og usikra, med grov overflate og ein mørk tunnel – lykt er anbefalt. Hald deg gjerne inn mot fjellet, og gå av sykkelen der du ikkje føler deg trygg. Vegen kan vera utsett for steinsprang og blir ikkje vedlikehalden, så ver varsam, spesielt ved nedbør.

The small fjord community of Indre (inner) Ofredal was a busy place between the early parts of the 19th century and the Second World War, where the water powered both the mill and the sawmill. The woods of Ofredal were, and remain, very high quality. Ytre (outer) Ofredal had a stone quarry, and white granite from that quarry is today found at the Grand Hotel in Oslo. The products of the sawmill in Indre Ofredal were transported to Bergen on a local version of a sloop, the Sognejekt. On the return journey they brought groceries that were sold on to the people of Sogn (Sogningar), who arrived in their rowboats to shop and get their grains ground. The old wooden mill still stands today, and you can hire both the boathouse and farmhouse for accommodation or a get together.

Køyrer du gjennom tunnelen frå Seimsdalen til Ofredalen og følgjer vegen heilt ned til fjorden, så kjem til eit historisk anlegg. Frå tidleg på 18-hundretalet og fram til siste verdskrigen var dette vesle fjordsamfunnet, Indre Ofredal, ein travel stad basert på vatn som drivkraft til mølla og sagbruket. Skogen i Ofredal hadde, og har, god kvalitet. I Ytre Ofredal fanst det eit steinbrot - og kvit granitt frå dette steinbrotet finn du i dag på Grand Hotel i Oslo. Produkta frå sagbruket i Indre Ofredal vart frakta til Bergen med eigen sognejekt og attende hadde ein med kjøpmannsvarer som vart vidareselde til sogningar som kom i robåt for å handla og mala korn. Den gamle mølla, som er laga i tre, kan du framleis sjå den dag i dag. Open somarkafè og hyggeleg vertskap!

The view from Bøttejuvet is one of the wildest things you can experience! With panoramic views to Hurrungane in Jotunheimen, Øvre Årdal and 1,320 meters straight down into the emerald green Årdalsvatnet.

Drive from Årdalstangen further into Seimsdalen. The road eventually turns into a gravel road. The road begins to zig-zag up the end of the valley, followed by a tractor road that goes up on the right side in a bend. This is the startingpoint.

Walking time approx. 3-4 hours, 4.2 km

Utsikta frå Bøttejuvet er noko av det villaste du kan oppleva! Med panoramautsikt til Hurrungane i Jotunheimen, Øvre Årdal og 1320 meter rett ned i det smaragdgrøne Årdalsvatnet.

Kjøyr frå Årdalstangen vidare inn Seimsdalen. Vegen går etter kvart over i ein grusveg.

Etter kvart byrjar grusvegen å kjøyre sikk-sakk opp enden av dalsida, etterkvart ein traktorveg som går opp på høgresida i ein sving. Her kan ein parkere og gå vidare.

To the viewpoint above Brennfjellet

Utsynspunktet ved Brennfjellet

If you ask the locals in Årdal, many will probably mention this particular hike as their favourite both summer and winter. To get to the viewpoint at Brennfjellet, you have to get through a hilly terrain with mixed forest and idyllic small ponds. It can seem as if you are walking on «Årdal`s roof», since the trip offers panoramic views of all the surrounding mountains. The trail is clear and well marked all the way from the starting point at Aosahytta cabin at Seimsåsen ski- og aktivitetssenter. Follow the signs to «Paradisjuv», and you will experience a view of the fjord landscape you will never forget.

Dersom du spør lokalbefolkninga i Årdal, så vil nok mange nemna akkurat denne turen som sin favoritt både sommar og vinter. For å koma til utsynspunktet ved Brennfjellet må du ta deg gjennom eit småkupert terreng med blandingsskog og idylliske småtjern. Det kan virka som om ein går på «Årdal sitt tak», sidan turen byr på panorama-utsyn til alle fjella omkring. Stien er tydeleg og godt merka heile vegen frå startpunktet på Aosahytta ved Seimsåsen Ski- og aktivitetssenter. Følg skilt mot «Paradisjuv», og du vil få oppleva eit utsyn over fjordlandskapet du seint vil gløyma.

Utladalen Camping ligg i inngangspartiet til Jotunheimen på vegen framover til Utladalen, Øvre Årdal. Campingen har 14 vinterisolerte hytter (6m WC/dusj).

Det er også plassar til telt og campingvogner. Utladalen Camping har eit sanitæranlegg med alle mogelegheita, og ein tømmestasjon for toalett. På campinga er det også kiosk og ein liten leikeplass.

In the July of 2026, we can provide tours and accommodations, as well as breakfast and simple meals in Indre Ofredal. Accommodation: 7 rooms (16 beds).

The historic little community, is a small heritage from the time of transition from agriculture to industrial production and it’s also a museum. It includes a mill, a sawmill with a frame saw, which still in the 20th century (70’s) was operational, as well as an old post office and a telegraph, which was closed in 1987.

Directions: Drive to Årdalstangen and follow signs to Ofredal.

Velkommen til Indre Ofredal, ei lita perle ved Sognefjorden. I juli 2026 kan me tilby omvising, overnatting med frukost, samt enkle smårettar. Me har 16 sengeplassar fordelt på 7 rom i hovudhus og sjøbod.

Det historiske vesle samfunnet blei, frå slutten av 1800 talet, ein travel stad basert på vatn som drivkraft til mølle og sagbruk. I vårt museum er mellom anna oppgangssag med 9 blad, stor vassdreven mølle, sjøbod, eldhus, smie med meir.
