Honouring Shared Sacrifice: AN Commemoration at the Anzac Jawa

A moving tribute in Cherrybrook remembers ANZAC soldiers of Indian origin and strengthens Australia–India bonds Under the calm beauty of an autumn sky, the Anzac Jawan Cenotaph in Cherrybrook transformed into a powerful space of remembrance and unity on ANZAC Day. Hosted by the Australia

India Cenotaph Committee, a project of the Hindu Council of Australia, the ceremony honoured the brave ANZAC soldiers of Indian origin who served during World War I—a group often overlooked in traditional narratives of the ANZAC legacy. Organized in partnership with the

Hornsby RSL Sub-Branch, 202 ACU Blacktown Army Cadet Unit, and the Hornsby Shire Council, the event brought together a broad cross-section of the community. Ex-servicemen, community leaders, students, officials, and families all stood side-by-side in solemn tribute, underscoring the shared heritage and mutual respect between Australia and India. The commemoration began with an Acknowledgment of Country, followed by traditional ceremonial proceedings, including the Mounting of the Guard and the Lowering of the Flags—poignant gestures of military honour. An emotional prologue delivered by Mr. George Main, Vice President of the Hornsby RSL SubBranch, set a reflective tone for the event. NZAC Day wan Cenotaph from Cherrybrook Technology High School, reflecting the deeply spiritual and multicultural essence of the commemoration. The crowd joined in singing the cherished hymn “Abide with Me”, creating a powerful moment of collective reflection and reverence. A Chorus of Voices and Honour Keynote addresses by esteemed dignitaries lent further significance to the ceremony. Speakers included Mr. Surinder Jain (National Vice President, Hindu Council of Australia), Colonel Virender Sahni, Dr. S. Janakiraman (Consul General of India, Sydney), Mr. Darren Bark (Co-Chair of Faith NSW), Federal MP Mr. Julian Leeser, State MPs Mr. James Wallace and Mr. Mark Hodges, and Hon. Warren Waddell, Mayor of Hornsby Shire. Local councillors Clr. Reena Jethi and Clr. Sreeni Pillamarri also offered their support and presence. A highlight of the ceremony was the laying of wreaths—a symbolic act performed by ex-servicemen, Army Cadets, community leaders, students, and members of the public. Each wreath represented a heartfelt tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the ANZAC soldiers of Indian descent. Adding a sacred dimension, Hindu prayers were led by Mr. Jagdish Trivedi of the Gujarati Samaj, creating a spiritual rhythm that echoed the themes of honour and peace. In a historic step forward for multicultural Australia, the Hindu community of New South Wales has celebrated the launch of a long-awaited cultural and spiritual centre in the heart of Western Sydney.

The event was a powerful reflection of unity and shared purpose, graced by the Premier of NSW Chris Minns, Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper, and Member for Parramatta Donna Davis, among other respected Members of Parliament and community leaders. rom April 18 to 20, 2025, Sydney became the proud host of one of the most significant and vibrant multicultural sporting events in Australia—the 37th Australian Sikh Games. Held at the Crest Sporting Complex in Bass Hill, in the heart of the Bankstown region, the Games brought together tens of thousands of individuals in a dazzling celebration of sport, Sikh culture, and community spirit. This year’s Games were truly historic, drawing over 200,000 spectators across the Easter long weekend and registering more than 7,000 athletes from across Australia and overseas. With participants competing across more than 15 major sports—including cricket, kabaddi, basketball, netball, hockey, powerlifting, and touch football—the scale and professionalism of the event reflected the incredible growth and stature the Sikh Games have achieved over nearly four decades. More than just a sporting event, the Games served as a dynamic celebration of Sikh heritage. From dawn till dusk, the venue was alive

Australian Sikh Games Light Up Sydney with the rhythm of Bhangra and Giddha performances, the aroma of free-flowing langar, and the vibrant displays of Sikh art, turban tying, and cultural education. Attendees were treated to an abundance of traditional food and refreshments chai, pakoras, fruit, and wholesome vegetarian meals, all lovingly prepared and distributed by selfless volunteers. One of the most heartening highlights was the work of Turbans 4 Australia, whose team spent the weekend offering free turbantying experiences to anyone wishing to try a professionally tied turban. Through these interactions, they promoted understanding and pride in the turban as a cultural and spiritual crown of the Sikh identity. The success of the 37th Sikh Games would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Sydney Organising Committee, led by President Dr. Avtar S. Sidhu. Under his stewardship, a dedicated team of

volunteers, coordinators, cultural leads, and medical and logistics staff worked for months to deliver an event that was both professionally executed and warmly received. Their shared vision of service—seva—and excellence created a platform where athletes, families, and communities could connect and celebrate. Narinder Singh, the Transport Coordinator, ensured smooth access and logistics throughout the weekend. Each individual, alongside countless others, contributed to what became a benchmark event in Australia’s multicultural calendar. Equally important were the sports coordinators, whose passion and organisation ensured each game and match ran smoothly. One of this year’s proudest moments was the historic debut of junior kabaddi players, with a youth team from South Australia’s Riverland region taking to the mats for the first time. Their participation not only symbolised the next generation’s interest in traditional Punjabi sports, but also reflected the evolving inclusiveness and dynamism of the Games. Beyond the action on the field, the 2025 Sikh Games were a powerful platform for cultural unity. Organised by the Australian National Sikh Sports and Cultural Council (ANSSACC), the Games continue to embody the values of fair play, community engagement, and multicultural celebration. As Ranjit Singh Khera, one of the event’s cultural coordinators, noted, “The Games have once again demonstrated the strength and unity of our community. It’s heartening to see our youth actively participating and embracing our cultural heritage through sports.” Whether you came to play, volunteer, perform, serve langar, or simply witness the beauty of the Sikh spirit in full bloom, the 37th Australian Sikh Games left an indelible impression on all who attended. International Gita Mahotsav 2025: A Celebra Devotion, and Community Unity in S

he International Gita Mahotsav (IGM) 2025 concluded in Sydney with an overwhelming outpouring of joy, unity, and spiritual reflection. The two-day celebration echoed the timeless wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita across diverse communities and age groups, reinforcing its relevance in modern life. Organised under the divine guidance of Param Pujya Swami Gyananand Ji Maharaj, the event brought together thousands in a shared expression of devotion, culture, and service. A Global Movement with Sacred Roots Originating in Kurukshetra, India—the very land where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna—the Mahotsav has evolved into a global celebration of spiritual philosophy. Inspired by the vision of Gita Manishi Swami Gyananand Ji Maharaj, the festival has reached across borders to countries including the UK, Canada, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and Australia. Following the success of its debut in 2023, IGM returned to Australia with greater momentum. This year’s theme, “From Knowledge to Practice – The Gita in Daily Life,” urged participants not only to study the scripture but to embody its teachings in everyday decisions, actions, and relationships.

Cultural programs featuring Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak, and fusion dances brought the Gita’s stories to life. The evening culminated in a breathtaking Gita Aarti beside the river, with the riverfront aglow in the soft light of thousands of diyas and the sound of collective chants echoing through the night. The event ended with a stunning fireworks display, symbolising the triumph of light over ignorance and community over isolation.

A Celebration Built on Seva and Community Spirit The real power of IGM 2025 lay in its grassroots organisation. Over 65 community and religious organisations—among them the Hindu Council of Australia, VHP, HSS, and BAPS Swaminarayan Temple—worked together in a seamless collaboration. Hundreds of volunteers managed every detail, from stage and AV setup to prasad distribution and guest coordination. Importantly, the event was entirely communityfunded. While financial gaps existed initially, the generosity of donors helped bridge them. A final call was made for continued support to carry the mission of the Gita forward. Looking Ahead: From Mahotsav to Movement Shri Sewa Singh, National President of the

Association of Haryanvis in Australia (AHA), closed the event with a passionate appeal: “This Mahotsav is not the end—it is the beginning of a movement. Rhythm of Bhangra showcased 7 teams, while Jaspreet team Folk & Funk brought 5 energetic performances to the stage, dazzling the audience.

The event also highlighted educational awareness, with Pioneer Coaching providing insights into early childhood education, and Gobind Singh and Nirmal Kaur Dhillon encouraging children to focus on academics. A special mention went to the tug-of-war team from Jugandeep Singh Jawaharlal’s Macallan College, which took home the victory. Jugandeep Singh also expressed gratitude to the Punjabi Music Association for integrating traditional games into the festival. The fair brought traditional Punjabi games like Bucket races, tug-of-war, and musical chairs to life, capturing the hearts of attendees, especially visiting parents from Punjab who enthusiastically participated. Cultural performances from Rhythm of Bhangra, Kapil Malhotra’s team United Bhangra Champions, Ronka Bhangra,Japan Monty Bhangra and Folk Punjab highlighted diverse Bhangra styles. he NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Prue Carr, has praised the work of the Federation of Community Language Schools which is supported by around 3,500 teachers teaching sixty-one community languages to 36,000 students at 500 schools across the state. The Minister was opening the Federation’s Annual Teachers Conference at Sydney University. Speaking to the conference in a prerecorded video message, Ms Carr, described the organisation as a powerhouse: “The impact you have on children all across the state cannot be underestimated. “You help kids stay connected to who they are, keeping language alive in homes and hearts for generations.

Equal praise is due to dance choreographer and lead singer Bhagirathi Parthiban, who masterfully directed the Koothu performances and contributed greatly to the show’s success. The immense labour of love and discipline behind this production was evident in every scene. The young performers’ untiring efforts and talent deserved constant applause. The production was a tapestry of multitasking, intricate choreography, and language mastery—an achievement that would normally take years to perfect. This production was truly a dream realised for Mavai and his dedicated team. It showcased the immense potential of language schools in Australia to go beyond conventional teaching, embracing art, culture, and heritage with extraordinary success.

Their presence, steeped in heritage and intentional design, turned the red carpet into a canvas of identity, elegance, and reclamation. For a man whose cinematic reach spans continents and generations, the moment was a reminder of how easily global institutions still overlook legends from outside the West. Livestream hosts skimmed past their entrances. Coverage leaned heavily on Western names. Icons like Shah Rukh Khan and Isha Ambani were treated more like anomalies than anchors. This year’s theme, a tribute to Black fashion legacies, rightfully celebrated long-overdue recognition—but it also laid bare how global systems still falter at embracing intersectional, non-Western identities with equal depth. Representation without recognition becomes mere tokenism. A Moment Etched in Gold, Pearls, and Protest The Met Gala is known for drama, but 2025 gave us something more enduring: cultural dignity wrapped in couture. From the return of the Patiala necklace to a cane that declared cinematic royalty, Diljit Dosanjh and Shah Rukh Khan didn’t just walk the carpet but they also rewrote its rules. t just 10 years old, Veer Tangri, a Year 5 student at The King’s School Preparatory, is already exemplifying the school’s values of courage, service, and global citizenship. Through his self-initiated charity, Golden Wickets, Veer has stepped into a leadership role that many aspire to—one of compassion in action. His journey began not in a boardroom or a classroom, but on a dusty football field in India. Where It All Started During a family trip to India, Veer noticed children his age playing football with immense joy, despite lacking the basic gear. No shoes. No uniforms. Just a shared love for the game. In that moment, Veer, who’s used to playing on pristine green fields in the iconic blue of The King’s School, took off his own boots and handed them to one of the boys. That simple act of kindness would become the foundation of Golden Wickets, a charity now focused on collecting and donating pre-loved sports equipment to underprivileged children. But the mission quickly grew—beyond boots, beyond sports, and beyond borders. Why Golden Wickets? In Veer’s own words: “One day, in the holidays, we were in India, and I went to the park to play soccer. I saw

some kids playing with so much happiness, even though they didn’t have proper equipment or even shoes. That made me feel like I wanted to help kids like them.” For Veer, it’s not just about sport—it’s about giving children joy, connection, and confidence. His goal is simple: “I want to build a community where all kids can play and have fun together.” Growing the Mission Veer launched Golden Wickets in 2019 with support from his parents. Together, they reached out to community partners and schools, identifying what each group needed—then rallying support back home in Australia. His classmates and teachers responded generously, often contributing equipment and volunteering during drives and events. Though originally focused on football gear, Golden Wickets now includes donations of books, stationery, food, and other essentials. Veer and his family have also organised friendly matches to foster connection and community among children who otherwise might not have these experiences. A Cricketer With a Cause An accomplished state-level cricketer, Veer is no stranger to competitive sport. He

Yet he knows his dream is only possible because of the access and support he’s received—something he’s determined to extend to others. “What started as a small act of kindness has now become something much bigger,” Veer shares. “It’s amazing to see so many people come together to help.” The Rewards and the Roadblocks When asked what the most rewarding part of his journey has been, Veer doesn’t hesitate: “Last year I shared my birthday with kids from one of the poorest areas in India. We played maths games and gave out sports gear. I was so happy to be with them.” But the path hasn’t been without challenges. Balancing school, sports, and charity work is a constant juggling act. “Sometimes it’s hard to find time,” he admits. “And getting

in touch with different organisations can be tricky.” Still, the lessons he’s learned are priceless: “Spreading kindness is actually pretty easy. India, bringing supplies and smiles to underprivileged kids in New Delhi. 4 Refugee Outreach through Community Care Inc.: Distributed cricket kits to passionate young players with limited resources. 4 Volunteer Work with The Salvation Army Parramatta: Prepares meals, creates motivational notes, and helps pack care boxes for families in need. Looking Ahead Veer hopes to continue expanding Golden Wickets through bigger donation drives, new partnerships, and more inclusive programs. His long-term vision? A world where every child, no matter where they’re from, has the chance to play, grow, and thrive. His advice to fellow students is both humble and powerful: “Don’t be scared. Just follow your heart and start with small steps. Meenakshi Sethi Motherhood has taught me the true art of unconditional love loving without expectations, just for the joy of seeing my children smile. One moment I’ll never forget is when I was about to start my job with the Railways after my son turned 1.5. I asked if he preferred I work during the day or night, and he said, “Mum, I need you all the time.” My heart melted. My advice to new moms? Don’t stress about being right just enjoy the ride. You grow alongside your child. My favorite mom hack is teaching accountability. Kids learn best through experience and a bit of trial and error. Balancing work and motherhood comes down to prioritizing time, setting boundaries, staying flexible, and making room for “me time.” My role model is my mother a homemaker who cared for everyone and still made time for herself and her friends. She showed me balance with grace and joy.

Kanan Shah Motherhood has taught me that I’m far more patient, resilient, and resourceful than I ever imagined. Raising a 20-year-old son and a 14-yearold daughter has turned me into a therapist, chauffeur, and late-night pep talk expert. I’ve learned to cherish every small moment giggles, cuddles, messy kitchen dances because they’re what matter most. One unforgettable moment? Impossible to pick just one they amaze me daily in the most beautiful ways. My advice to new moms: trust your instincts. You know your child better than anyone. A Mother’s Day Reflection: Loving My Son Through the Storm

hen I became pregnant with my first child, I knew I wanted to go back home. Not just emotionally, but physically I flew across the ocean from California back to my hometown of Sydney, Australia. I wanted my baby to be born where I was born. I wanted my journey into motherhood to begin where my own mother had raised me with eucalyptus trees overhead and the Pacific winds carrying in a sense of belonging. My son was born in Sydney. Ten fingers, ten toes. The softest skin and the deepest eyes I had ever seen. I held him in my arms and whispered the same promises all mothers do: I will protect you. I will never leave you. I will love you, always. I didn’t know then what those promises would truly require of me. Years later, now living in California as a single mother of two, I still whisper those promises. But they sound different now. They sound like me speaking through a locked bathroom door during a meltdown. They sound like whispered instructions to my daughter and elderly parents

to go to their rooms, just for safety. They sound like pleading prayers in the backyard as my son screams, throws things, and falls apart because the world has become too much for him again. My son is autistic. He is also non-verbal. He is gentle and kind, helpful and funny. He loves music especially Michael Jackson and Taylor Swift and he remembers the lyrics better than most of us. He carries his sister’s backpack to the car and brings his grandmother tissues when she coughs. But he also has days, sometimes weeks, when something deep within him combusts. The world is loud. It is unpredictable. And he doesn’t have the words to explain what he’s feeling so his body becomes his voice. Sometimes that voice shakes the entire house. This Mother’s Day, while social media fills with photos of brunches and flower bouquets, I want to speak to the kind of motherhood that doesn’t always fit neatly on a greeting card. The kind of motherhood that happens behind closed doors. The kind that hurts and heals at the very same time. Because sometimes, being a mother means

having bruises on your arms from the child you’d do anything to protect. It means knowing they didn’t mean it and holding them anyway. It means staying quiet in public, because if you told people what happened last night, they wouldn’t understand. Worse, they might judge him. Or me. Or both. Most days, there is no one else to help. No coparent to “take over.” No strong arms to hold him steady while I soothe the rest of the family. It’s just me. Just Mum. When a meltdown hits, I go into survival mode. I gently, sometimes forcefully, steer my son into the backyard where he can scream and throw things without hurting anyone. My neighbors sometimes look over the fence. Sometimes they call out. Most of the time, they just shut their windows. And honestly, I don’t blame them. The noise is frightening. The chaos is real. But so is the love. After the storm, there are tears. Deep, shuddering sobs from a boy who didn’t mean to break the world around him. I sit with him, hold him, sometimes with my own hands trembling. I say softly, “You’re safe. I’m still here.” And he clings to me, like a sailor clinging to wreckage. I don’t often share these moments. Because I’ve seen the look people give when they hear about aggression in autism. And I can’t bear the thought of them labeling my son as dangerous. He is not. He is confused, overwhelmed, trapped by a body and brain that doesn’t match the world around him. And I’m doing my best. But it’s hard. Support groups help. Hearing from other mothers helps. But even there, I find myself quiet sometimes. Some moms say, “My husband restrains our son while I protect the other kids.” And I nod. But I don’t have that option. I’ve had to build

s a family relationship coach, PoojaBharat have long believed that the strength of a family isn’t measured only by the bonds within its four walls, but by how those bonds inspire action beyond them. And so, an idea was born: to unite families in an act of compassion—to cook and serve food for the homeless in honour of mothers everywhere. This Mother’s Day is not always about the breakfast in bed or bouquet of flowers but it’s about nurturing the spirit of a mum. It was a heartfelt invitation for families to come together in a shared purpose: to teach children empathy not through words, but through action; to model for them what love looks like when it goes beyond the comfort zones. In collaboration with Parramatta Mission, the idea grew into a plan. We called it “A Mother’s Heart: Cooking with Compassion.” Fifteen families volunteered in the event. Each one brought not just ingredients, but intention. From 8 a.m., our community kitchen came alive—with the rhythm of chopping vegetables, the aroma of rajma and rice, the laughter of teenagers folding fairy bread, and parents stirring curry and making those moments as unforgettable memories. Children who often spend Sundays with screens in hand stood beside their parents, learning to cook not just food—but dignity and care. Mothers wore their aprons like capes. Fathers helped serving the meals like

love letters to the forgotten. Teenagers surprised us all by not only showing up, but stepping up—proving that compassion still has a strong pulse in the next generation. Little hands rolled out slices of soft white bread, spreading butter and hundreds and thousands to make fairy bread—a simple treat, but one that brought wide smiles to both the makers and, later, the receivers. That moment—watching children carefully decorate fairy bread for someone they might never meet—was a turning point. In that colourful sprinkle of sugar and effort, you could see the purest form of empathy take shape. No screens, no distractions, just genuine

intention. The kind that mothers across generations have passed down without needing words. By noon, over more than 100 meals were ready and served, And by 3 p.m., the dishes were washed, tables cleared, and hearts undeniably full. We did it together as one team because we as PoojaBharat believe that family is where empathy begins. Because Mother’s Day is not just for receiving—it’s for reflecting on the values our mothers gave us: care, compassion, and community. ewbury Seniors Club in Craigieburn celebrated Vaisakhi festival on 19th of April 2025 in Craigieburn to commemorate the Sikh history. Members from different literary groups were also present there . Mrs Gurdeep Kaur Sandhu was the anchor throughout the entire program. There was a big gathering of more than 225 people all together. Gidha, Bhangda, dance and so many other items were performed in the presence of all the members in the big hall. As a matter of routine, birthday of our five esteemed members was also celebrated. n Saturday, April 12, 2025, the Indo-Australian Welfare Clubgrandly celebrated a culturally rich Vaisakhi Mela in the town of Mickleham, Melbourne (Australia). Around 250 members participated in the event, arriving enthusiastically from various parts of Melbourne. The celebration featured children performing Bhangra, and prominent community members reciting songs and poems related to Vaisakhi. Representatives of the IndoAustralian Welfare Club also shared the historical significance of Vaisakhi. Highlights of the event included an energetic Bhangra performance by the elder men of the club and a vibrant Giddha by senior women. The Giddha performed by young women toward the end added further color and charm to the festivities. A well-organized food and refreshment arrangement was made for the guests in attendance. Sikh migrants, led by the town’s first known settler Sojan Singh, established a thriving local business district in the early 20th century. Their shops and services became part of daily life in Dongara, and their impact continues to be remembered through oral histories.

Community Support and ResearchThe naming initiative was spearheaded by the Irwin District Historical Society (IDHS), which conducted historical research and advocated for official recognition over the past two years. Their shops were bought out and their community slowly disappeared from public consciousness,” he said.

Little Fighter, Big Heart: Mimi Through Illness and H

When Mimi turned one, her parents noticed something unexpected— her soft, baby hair began to fall out. Soon, her eyebrows and eyelashes disappeared too. It was the first sign of something her parents never imagined would lead to a much larger battle. Doctors diagnosed Mimi with alopecia, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss. While the condition itself wasn’t life-threatening, her parents, Mohamad and Fatina, were told her hair might never return.

ut it was during a routine blood test for her alopecia treatment in December 2023 that doctors discovered something far more serious—possible signs of leukaemia. Suddenly, what seemed like a manageable condition became a medical emergency. “She was so full of energy,” Fatina recalls. “She was jumping around, smiling. We couldn’t believe she might be sick.”

The news brought back painful memories for Fatina, who had lost her father to a brain tumour when she was just a child. Now, as a mother herself, she faced the terrifying possibility of losing her own daughter. But hope arrived in the form of a dedicated medical team. One of Mimi’s doctors, Paediatric Oncologist Dr Claudia Toro, comforted the heartbroken parents with words they’ll never forget.

But their worst fears were confirmed at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH). Little Mimi was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a fastprogressing form of childhood cancer.

“She put her hand on my shoulder and said, ‘Don’t worry, we’ve got this.’ And in that moment, I believed her,” Fatina said. Mimi began intensive chemotherapy almost immediately. The first six months were grueling.

“I screamed,” Fatina says quietly. “It was like the world stopped.”

“There were days she couldn’t even open her eyes,” Mohamad shared. “She

mi’s Journey Hope didn’t want to move, to talk, to do anything. It was heartbreaking.” Their home, once filled with Mimi’s laughter, became a place of quiet resilience. Her parents and siblings took turns to lift her spirits on the darkest days. Then came a moment of light: within a month of starting treatment, tests showed no more cancer. Mimi was in remission. “That was the happiest moment of our lives,” Fatina said with a smile. “Every parent waits for that news. I’ll never forget it.”

Mimi’s journey isn’t over yet. She still needs ongoing chemotherapy to ensure the cancer doesn’t return. But her care has transitioned from hospital to home through the RCH Wallaby Program—a service that brings hospital-level care to children in their homes.

“I got goosebumps,” Fatina said, her eyes welling up. “I’ve never had the chance to brush her hair. And now, I will. That’s one of the best things.”

“With five kids, it’s a blessing,” Fatina says. “The nurses come, give medication, change dressings. It takes a lot of pressure off.”

Mimi’s story is one of strength, family, and a community of care that turned fear into hope. In the face of the unimaginable, this brave little girl—and the people who love her— have shown what it means to fight with everything you’ve got.
