ou would be hard-pressed to walk down a bustling, business-lined street these days and not see at least one storefront with the letters CBD in their window. So, what exactly is this ubiquitous industry, and did it seemingly grow overnight? WHAT IS CBD?
In 1950, architect Frank Redford designed this attraction as one of just seven motel courts with this unique design. These accommodations are styled after the teepees used by Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. Despite the inspiration, Redford preferred the ring of “Wigwam Village” (another type of dwelling) to “Teepee Village,” and chose the former as the name of his creation. Today, guests can book a stay in one of 15 large “wigwam” lodgings featuring the modern conveniences of a full bathroom, cable TV, heat, and air conditioning.

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound from the plant Cannabis sativa. The cannabis plant is also known as marijuana or hemp, which is made up of CBD and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) – the former a non-psychoactive natural substance and the latter being the ingredient that makes pot so darn popular. Although the federal and state governments have been wrangling for years over the legality of marijuana, the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 officially legalized hemp-derived products. WHAT CBD DOES The elements of CBD have been shown to provide a natural calming effect often associated with cannabis. The FDA has approved a CBD-based medication called Epidiolex for certain types of epilepsy, however other health benefits are primarily anecdotal at this point. Talk to any CBD advocate and they’ll tell you the benefits are plentiful. The oil is known to mellow the nervous system which can aid in both anxiety and pain management. The availability and addition of CBD to a vast array of products from edibles and vape products to tinctures and bath bombs has made it both appealing and accessible to the curious masses. BEFORE YOU BUY & TRY Healthcare professionals remind consumers that the oil is still being researched in numerous markets and shouldn’t be considered a wonder drug. They suggest a few common sense guidelines when you want to know what the buzz is all about: • Buy IRL. Your brick and mortar stores like Whole Foods usually offer more product vetting. • Check the label for lot or batch numbers and third-party testing results. Of course, television has its own history of ups and downs. The first golden era of TV took place from the late 1940s through the late 1950s. TV was relatively new and there wasn’t yet a television set in every home. Shows were comparatively few and far between and they were quite highbrow—think Shakespearean plays, opera, ballet, and the first Walt Disney programs. Musicals such as Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz debuted. It was the kind of programming you gathered the whole family together to tune in to a special show.

In the last several years, with the dawn of streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and more fringe channels all vying for our eyeballs, the viewing options are vast and varied. In fact, between 2011 and 2016 scripted TV shows increased by 71 percent. In 2018, there were 495 original scripted TV shows, compared to only 182 in 2002. It now feels like there’s almost too much content to keep up with (and, of course, not all of it is good). Still, having more choices as we remain increasingly at home is good news we can all use. DIRECTIONS With a sharp knife, make cut-out faces in two tortillas. Brush oil on both sides of all four tortillas. Place the two uncut tortillas on a baking sheet and top with ¼ cup cheese. Top each with one cut-out face tortilla. Bake at 400° F for 5 minutes or until tortillas are golden-brown and cheese is melted. Use olives to decorate eyes
