Desert Botanical Gardens Flashlight Tours Phoenix | Saturdays through Aug. 31 DBG.org

T

Summer nights shine at DBG with flashlight tours. All ages will have a blast getting handson during this self-guided nocturnal adventure. Every Saturday night at 7pm, check out the night blooming plants and animals that come out after dark.

he residential and commercial building industry has been familiar with the sustainable movement for years, but we’re now seeing more metaphoric shades of green in home decor and lifestyle as well – and we’re excited! Homeowners are making conscious decisions to acknowledge environmental concerns by making eco-friendly choices in their personal spaces.

Arizona Diamondbacks Phoenix | Games through Sept. 2019 MLB.com/dbacks

Unless, however, you’re ready to go all Swiss Family Robinson and set up quarters in a large tree, sans electricity and running water, here are some ideas to consider when creating a beautiful, yet environmentally responsible living space:

Catch the action as Arizona’s own boys of summer take to the field all season long at air-conditioned Chase Field in Downtown Phoenix. Go Diamondbacks!

Mummies of the World: The Exhibition Phoenix | Daily through Sept. 2 AZScience.org Featuring 40 real human and animal mummies and 85 rare artifacts from across the globe. This exhibition, straight from Budapest, provides a window into the lives of ancient people from every region of the world. Don’t miss this enthralling view to the past!

Rascal Flatts at Ak Chin Pavilion Phoenix | Aug. 3 RascalFlatts.com One band. Ten albums. Sixteen Number One hits. Over 23 million records and 10 million tickets sold. Rascal Flatts is heating up the summer for fans – calling all Flattheads!

Musical Icon: Elvis Phoenix| Aug. 10-11 MIM.org Start off Elvis Week at the Musical Instrument Museum with a closer look at the legacy of the “King of Rock and Roll.” Listen to special talks about his music and watch an iconic Elvis movie before visiting the exhibit.

LET THERE BE LIGHT | In addition to using energy-efficient lighting and timers around your home, there are other less obvious ways to conserve. Painting the walls in lighter hues will reflect the natural light while darker rooms and décor tend to require more artificial lighting. Adopting a more minimalist style – a la the KonMari Method – will reduce clutter as well as your carbon footprint. MATERIAL WORLD | When buying new furniture or home upgrades like countertops and flooring, a little extra online searching will lead you to companies that specifically use sustainable or recycled materials. Experts predict an $80 million market for green goods in the next five years and manufacturers recognize the growing demand for affordable, eco-savvy materials. WATER-WISE | An easy and affordable fix is to replace faucets, toilets and shower heads with new, efficient fixtures that can net as much as 70% less water use. Rolling green lawns are making way for xeriscaping and landscaping with more native plants and drip irrigation, fewer chemicals and less water-waste. YOU HAVE THE POWER | Energy-efficient appliances are a no-brainer when making new purchases, and you may even get money back from your local utility provider when getting rid of the old “garage fridge.” Take advantage of terrific tech advancements that further the planet’s cause like smart thermostats and other remote home efficiency apps. Control your temperature, lights and security from miles away, reducing utility bills along with worries. THE UPSIDE OF RECYCLING | The new word is upcycling and it is not your grandmother’s craft project. A trip through Pinterest and Etsy will open you up to a whole new world of creating beautiful items for the home using someone else’s, um… trash. A coat of paint and modern drawer pulls will bring a dated dresser sharply into the 21st Century. Green manufacturers are producing unique backsplashes with recycled glass. Rethink and repurpose some of the single-use plastic that’s choking our oceans. There are interior designers focusing on this environmentally friendly field who can help make your home one of sustainable beauty, but with a few of these lifestyle changes and affordable choices, you’ll contribute to a healthier planet.

emember when Broadway shows were mostly dusty old remakes from the 1950s? Think Oklahoma! and Guys and Dolls. Sure, those are classic musicals but to a younger audience they don’t rate as super hip. Nowadays, Broadway is anything but old news, with transformation and innovation the key to keeping the Great White Way fresh in the 21st century. Today’s producers, directors, and writers are looking for sure bets that appeal to people of all ages and ethnicities and in turn are often banking on popular movies and books that are transformed into song-anddance shows. And Broadway is booming because of it. Revolutionary shows like Hamilton have also helped introduce a whole new fan base to musicals and now young and old alike are flocking to the Great White Way. With shows continuing to travel the country for years after their New York City debuts, it all ends up spelling big bucks for Broadway and beyond. So just what are some of the latest pop culture hits being transformed into musical theater? How about these popular movies that are currently playing or are in the works to be on Broadway: Beetlejuice, Frozen, King Kong, Heathers, Mean Girls, Pretty Woman, Tootsie, Waitress, Moulin Rouge: The Musical,13 Going On 30, Beaches, The Bodyguard, Bull Durham, The Devil Wears Prada, Diner, The Flamingo Kid,

IN GOOD TASTE

JULY | AUGUST 2019

Magic Mike, Mrs. Doubtfire, and The Preacher’s Wife. Wow, who would have ever imagined Beetlejuice on Broadway? Popular books are also hot for Broadway remakes, including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Secret Garden. Plus, there’s Archie based on the classic comic book character and the whole Riverdale gang. Another on-fire trend? Bio-musicals about well-known singers and their music. For starters, there are the Broadway shows Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, The Cher Show, Tina (about the life of Tina Turner), Jagged Little Pill (based on the songs of Alanis Morissette), Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough (a biomusical based on the songs of Michael Jackson), and Once Upon a One More Time (based on the songs of Britney Spears). There’s even an as yet untitled show based on the songs of Pat Benatar in the works. And not to be forgotten are several remakes of hit television shows now being repolished as Broadway musicals, including Soul Train and The Honeymooners. The bottom line? Anything goes on Broadway today … and people are loving it!
