While even the most educated art lover may have strong negative opinions about a piece that involves seemingly random brush strokes or splotches, there is much more than meets the eye behind the most well-known modern artworks. Indeed, there’s a rich history behind the abstract movement that can shed light on the value of this art form, and maybe enhance your appreciation as well.

Abstraction literally means to take something away from and that was the notion inspiring the artists of the late 19th century. The first signs of the movement can be traced to Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Cubism, which all flirted with non-representational art. Expressionists like Henri Mattise focused more on color, shapes, and the emotions they evoked. Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali painted real things and people in an unreal manner. But the artist most associated with the birth of the abstract movement was Wassily Kandinsky.

s an increasing number of natural disasters wreck havoc on our country and our world, it’s the perfect time to applaud organizations that step in and help out when people are in need. One such group that soars above the rest is Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit that helps to build homes for those who are in dire circumstances, such as natural disasters or civil war and unrest. These life up-ending events create millions of displaced people. Through Habitat’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Response program, the organization is able to help with everything from setting up temporary emergency shelter to transitioning back to a renovated home or finding a new one. Of course, this nonprofit doesn’t only help out in times of natural disasters. Its founders Millard and Linda Fuller, as well as countless volunteers, have been helping families in need to build or renovate affordable homes since 1976. The group’s mission is
to help give everyone a decent place to live. And Habitat for Humanity has sure been busy, working in local communities across all 50 states in the United States and in more than 70 countries. You’ve probably seen former U.S. president Jimmy Carter donning a hardhat and holding a hammer working for the group. Since 1984, Carter and his wife Rosalynn have helped build houses and raise awareness for the good works of Habitat for Humanity. Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, and David Letterman all recently helped out building homes in Indiana alongside homeowners who will then take over the affordable mortgages. Recipients of a Habitat home are selected based on these factors: their level of need, their willingness to partner with Habitat, and finally their ability to repay a mortgage through an affordable payment plan. Once selected, the homeowner builds and works alongside volunteers to create their new home. There are many ways you can get involved and help out. First, you can volunteer your time and sweat equity by helping to build or renovate houses. Visit www.habitat.org and enter your zip code to see where projects are occurring in your area. If you aren’t able to physically help build, you can donate nolonger-needed home furnishings to a local Habitat ReStore. These donation centers sell gently used furniture, appliances, building materials, and more at a fraction of the retail price. To find a location, enter your zip code at www.habitat.org. Finally, you can simply make a monetary donation by visiting www.habitat.org.
The commonality of these artists – besides all being male – is that before experimenting with the non-representational, they were accomplished illustrators and painters. They understood perspective and color theory and the golden ratio – a compositional strategy in art. They saw modern art as an emotional response to the fundamental changes in society due to technology, the economy and philosophy. “I don’t know art, but I know what I like.” Few art forms elicit such strong reactions as abstract and contemporary, which is exactly how the original envelope-pushers wanted it. One person examining Bleu II by Joan Miro may see a chain of islands on a serene blue sea, while her companion dismisses it as incoherent blobs and slashes of color. Neither of them would be wrong and that is the beauty of abstract art. Artists throughout the last century continue to be inspired by the early movement and contemporary art certainly isn’t going anywhere – especially with popular and thriving urban centers around the world that are ideal for large, bold statements in paint and sculpture.
