How to Say No F
rom virtual cocktail parties with coworkers to Facetime dates with friends, it’s hard to know how to say “no” to things you don’t have the time, energy, or desire for – especially when your go-to excuses are no longer viable. Of course, we all want to support each other and stay in touch, but it’s perfectly okay to know your limits and set boundaries. Learning when it’s appropriate to say “no” in a way that’s friendly but firm can help you reclaim your time and peace of mind. The best part? No excuses necessary.
looks featured in interior design blogs and at the home goods stores around town, you will soon. From patterned comforters and striped cushions to octagonal tiles and angled coffee tables, geometric patterns are having a major design moment. And why not? After years of natural and organic trends, geometric patterns lend a contemporary, sophisticated vibe to more traditional and neutral schemes, even if just used sparingly. You can’t escape shapes in interior design right now. Some spots it’s most popular: Wall and floor tiles, naturally. From small hexagon tiles for the bathroom and large rectangles for the kitchen backsplash to black-and-white motif entry hall floors, geometric tiles are fresh, elegant, and clean looking. Of course, geometric design has never gone out of style, which is why homeowners aren’t afraid to commit to the look in such a permanent way. And don’t forget about your walls. Geometric patterned and repetitive wallpaper is a bold look that is fresh, powerful, and always elegant when done right. Even
lighting and cabinet hardware are seeing signs of the geometric revival, with angular metal lighting fixtures adding an edge to dining rooms and hexagonal drawer pulls popping up in kitchen showrooms. Looking for a quick linear fix? Geometric patterned textiles are an easy way to get the look without going overboard … or over budget. Look for bright patterned bed linens and throw pillows, which provide pops of energy and color in otherwise neutral design schemes. Rugs with geometric shapes are also dominating the carpet scene right now, offering an easier and less expensive way to embrace this trend. Consider geometric wallpaper in one room, rather than several, or opt for geometric artwork to adorn your wall, much less of a commitment. Or try selecting just one oversized piece of geometric furniture or a rug to be the focal point of a room. The math trend is even evident in the kitchen on everything from placemats and table runners to crocks and cups and saucers. Again, a little touch may be all you need to make an all-white classic kitchen seem suddenly a bit more chic. Something about the structure of lines and repetition of patterns lends a feeling of order and continuity to our spaces, something we may all feel the need for now.
First, experts recommend prioritizing. To help, make a list of things that are truly important to you. For example, getting in touch with close family or attending important job events that will help you to succeed. Calling a friend who always makes you feel great. And volunteering at the food pantry, which helps you feel positive about your community. But there are also things we say yes to knowing we really don’t have the energy for these commitments. If these meet-ups aren’t on your “must-do” list, it’s time to opt out. So now you know what isn’t on your mandatory list. It’s time to create a script so you know exactly what you’re going to say next time you’re asked to do something you can’t or don’t want to do. Try, “Thanks so much for the invite, but I don’t have time right now.” Period. Or, “Sorry, but I’m not able to help out right now. Thanks for thinking of me.” And that’s all you need to say. Period. Practice these lines so you are ready when the invitations pop up. And finally, be firm. We all have friends who will try to twist our arm even after you’ve said no. There’s also that voice in your head that says, “I should do [insert commitment here].” Be firm in saying no to them and yourself. After you’ve had more time to consider, if you feel you can be a part of the committee or you can join that virtual playgroup for your kids, get in touch and see if it’s still a possibility. In the end, you will find time to connect with people and help out others without feeling frenzied from saying yes to everything. It will also feel great to say yes to the things that are truly important to you.
