et’s face it: The days of wall-to-wall carpeting are pretty much gone for good, except for perhaps upstairs bedrooms or a cozy family room. When it comes to flooring options for your home, hard surfaces are always the preferred pick. After all, beautiful tile, natural stone, and glistening hardwood floors offer so many benefits. These long-living options are cool to your feet (ideal during the summer heat), easy to clean and maintain, and provide a hypoallergenic living environment for allergy sufferers. And if you have dogs or cats, hard floors are almost a necessity.
Home to the State Capitol, Honolulu is the vibrant epicenter of Hawaii. Here you’ll find everything from historic landmarks and treasured monuments to world-class shopping and a flourishing arts and culture scene. Home to the majority of Oahu’s population, the sprawling city of Honolulu spreads throughout the southeastern shores of Oahu, from Pearl Harbor to Makapuu Point, encompassing world famous Waikiki. Honolulu has it all. This is the home of some of Hawaii’s most historic places from Iolani Palace, the Kawaiahao Church, the Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archive and the treasured artifacts of the Bishop Museum to iconic landmarks like the Aloha Tower, the King Kamehameha I Statue, the Duke Kahanamoku Statue and the historic Hawaii Theatre. Honolulu is also Hawaii’s hot spot for arts, culture and entertainment. From the night life, live music and fine dining of Waikiki to the art galleries and underground bars of the Chinatown arts district. Whether you’re looking for Hawaii’s finest museums, or Hawaii’s finest Hawaii Regional Cuisine chefs, the best resorts, festivals, and events, or just some fun things to do, you’ll find it all in Honolulu. Of course, one other great thing about hard flooring is the chance to personalize and update the look of a room with fun and funky rug options, without having to spend a ton of cash. Not only do area rugs soften and personalize a room, but they can also provide a focal point, essential for creating cozy and inviting sitting, entertaining, and dining spaces. You can even swap them out seasonally, or if they were truly inexpensive, toss them when you’re tired of them.
COOL TREATS N
othing says summer more than a long line outside the local ice cream shop. After all, who can resist a sweet and cooling treat after a long day in the sun? Lucky for us, today’s frozen desserts come in many varieties, from fancy Italianstyle gelatos to healthy frozen yogurts. And don’t forget fruity sorbets and sherbets. But what exactly is the difference between all these tasty treats? Here’s a quick guide to summer’s favorite frozen delights. Gelato is one sweet treat that seems to be popping up all over. But how does this European-style sweet stuff differ from Americanstyle ice cream? There are three main distinctions: Gelato is made with less fat, isn’t churned as much, and is stored and served at a warmer temperature, all of which gives it its silky mouth feel. Ice cream, on the other hand, is made with cream rather than lower-
The good news about choosing area rugs today is that almost any look goes. Perhaps you prefer a geometric patterned rug full of shapes and colors to freshen up your living room for the summer. Pair it with accessories in the same bright hues to give your home a bright and fun summer look. We’re thinking bright lime greens or shiny lemon yellows. Or maybe you like a more rustic-looking leather rug, in natural ombre coloring to give your home a subdued and hip vibe. It all works in today’s modern homes. And don’t de afraid to play with textures (after all you aren’t married to an inexpensive area rug). Shag area rugs give a truly cozy look to a room, inviting homeowners to lounge around with kids or read a good book. Materials can vary from sheepskin and leather (faux varieties are also available) to wool or recycled plastic, which can be used indoors or out (and can even be hosed off for easy cleaning!). Gone are the days of ultra-expensive Oriental rugs that have to be sent out to the dry cleaners for a million bucks! Bottom line: Spend your money on the amazing array of hardwood flooring options out there, then dress up your rooms with less expensive and easyto-swap out area rugs. They’re going to feel great underfoot!

fat milk, and is churned at a very high speed, giving it a much airier texture. Both of course are equally delicious!
Another common question: What’s the difference between sorbet and sherbet. Sorbet is made from two main ingredients: Fruit and sugar. It does not contain milk, making it the perfect option for dairy allergy folks. It’s light and refreshing and ideal for anyone not wanting that full feeling you can get from other desserts. Sherbet, on the other hand, contains a little milk and sometimes eggs or gelatin. The result is creamier than sorbet, but not as creamy as ice cream. You’ve probably also heard of crystal-like granita. This dairy-free dish is similar to sorbet, but instead of churning it slightly, it’s frozen and scraped into icy pieces. Kind of like a chunky grownup snow cone. Yum! Last but not least is frozen yogurt, which in recent years has gained in popularity, with yogurt chains popping up in almost every shopping center around the country. Frozen yogurt is a combination of milk containing those healthy active and live cultures, sugar, flavors, and other stabilizing ingredients. The result is healthier, with most servings of frozen yogurt offering less fat and more protein, plus the good-for-you active yogurt cultures. The only trouble with frozen yogurt these days? Deciding which yogurt shop and which flavors—or mix of complementary flavors—to try out first. No matter which spot you choose, we’re sure all those tempting toppings will make your experience a highlight of the summer.
