MAY | JUNE 2017

Scottsdale | Sundays through July 2 TheRailroadPark.com | 480.312.2312 Rock and roll at the Railroad Park! Enjoy free concerts every Sunday evening with a variety of local bands. Recently recognized as one of the best live music venues in Arizona by Best of American Towns. With classic rock, retro 80s, country, rhythm and blues and retro 90s, we’ve got a little something for everyone. The park’s iconic steam engines pull the Paradise & Pacific Railroad – train and carousel ride tickets are available. Food is available for purchase. Bring a blanket or chair and relax in the park!

Roars & Pours Phoenix Zoo | May 18 PhoenixZoo.org| 602.286.3800 Swing by for a happy hour with a wild side! Guests 21 and older can sip and stroll select Zoo trails while enjoying craft brews, wine and food. Enjoy animal encounters, yard games, live music, entertainment and more. We’d be “lion” if we said this event isn’t a roaring good time!

Phoenix Comicon Phoenix Convention Center | May 25-28 PhoenixComicon.com | 602.635.4306 Phoenix Comicon is the signature pop culture experience of the Southwest. It presents the chance for fans to meet with their favorite creators, actors, authors and get their autograph (and have a photo taken with them!). Comicon brings out the top comic book writers and artists in the industry, features many genres from pop culture (anime, authors, horror, and steampunk) and presents a full weekend of events and activities for you and your family.

Songs From The B-Side – Lunch Time Theater Herberger Theater | June 5 HerbergerTheater.org | 602.254.7399 Once upon a time, record labels released prospective hit songs as singles on 45-rpm vinyl. On the A-side was the hit, and the B-side, not a hit – often a throwaway track from the concurrent album. This show is about great songs that were never hits, but maybe should’ve been.

Julianne & Derek Hough: Move - Beyond Comerica Theatre | June 10 ComericaTheatre.com | 602.379.2800 Derek and Julianne Hough are dancing their way to Phoenix this summer! The brother and sister ballroom wonders from “Dancing with the Stars” fame are returning to dance together in 2017 with an all-new production following the resounding success of their Move Live tour in 2014 and 2015.

WELLNESS P

eople in the United States spend about 70 percent of their time inside their home. Until recently there has been little attention paid to designing and building with a focus on a resident’s physical and mental health, but the trend of “wellness real estate” is on the rise. Specific attributes of the built environment considered integral to wellness include: water, air quality, light, comfort, nourishment and mind. As such, indoor air quality is central to the vision of a healthy home and focuses on the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are released from building products, furniture, flooring, fabrics and glues. “People are making homes that are healthy homes at all price ranges. Good air quality, no VOCs, all of those things have become so mainstream you don’t have to spend extra money to have those elements, to have a healthy home,” says Phil Kean, a Florida architect and custom home builder. There is a natural affinity between green and wellness, but for most consumers, wellness is more compelling.

“Some people don’t care about saving energy, but everybody wants a house that is healthy,” adds Kean. Healthier, affordable products and systems have found their way into the mainstream. For example, Columbia Forest Products’ PureBond engineered wood products made with soy-based glue are now pervasive. Formaldehyde-free fiberglass insulation, introduced in 2009, has become the norm. More manufacturers are also working to develop building products that promote good air quality with flooring, paint and even drywall that improves air quality. New homes today include other features and floorplans that promote a sense of wellbeing. One of the strongest trends in home design is a connection with the outdoors. Being able to be inside while bringing the outside in has an innate wellness aspect to it. Equally important is the amount of natural light new home designs bring to interiors. In addition, developers are focusing on community features that promote healthy living and social connection. Paul Scialla, founder of Delos, writes about the future of sustainability and wellness in the real estate market. Delos is a pioneer of the concept of Wellness Real Estate, and has founded the WELL Building Standard. He says that the future of real estate will go beyond sustainability, and it will do a more comprehensive job of accounting for the way that both human bodies and minds interact with the built environment.

alling all cruisers! If you’ve done the cruise liner thing and think you’re done with that scene, or you’re just looking for some fresh vacation ideas, perhaps it’s time to explore theme cruises. These destination cruises focus on a specific interest, entertainer, or hobby, such as NASCAR or even the Walking Dead television show (yes, really!). Think of it as a cruise and concert/convention all rolled into one. Of course, there are also more mainstream theme cruises focused on wine regions or recording artists who perform live and mingle with the passengers. These tailor-made voyages provide a unique and relaxing way to enjoy whatever it is you’re into with likeminded friends on board a luxury ship. Here are some additional theme offerings: Carnival hosts Latin dance, Salsa, and Celtic themed cruises. Royal Caribbean Cruises offers a Jamrock Reggae cruise, Middle Eastern stars cruises, and Rock Legends cruises – this year featuring Sammy Hagar, with live entertainment and dancing late into the night. MSC Cruises offers guests a Winery at Sea voyage during which oenophiles can sip and savor an array of tasty wines without having to worry about who’s driving home. MSC also hosts a Baseball Greats cruise for those looking to rub elbows with some former famous sluggers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers up AMC’s The Walking Dead cruise – called Walker Stalker – complete with its TV stars, zombie dancing,

IN GOOD TASTE

and of course full-makeup walking dead costumes. And for the kids? Disney Cruise Lines are always Disney themed, of course, but certain cruises also have a Star Wars Day at Sea and a Marvel Day at Sea, sure to be an extra cool bonus for the little ones (and not so little ones, too) who would love to soak up some sun with Darth Vader or Captain America. Themed cruises have become so popular that some charter lines cater specifically to this growing trend. Entertainment Cruise Productions, for example, is a niche-market cruise line that solely offers music and entertainment-themed cruises. They recently hosted the aforementioned NASCAR cruise, where racing fans were treated to Caribbean views alongside Dale Earnhardt Jr. while listening to the Beach Boys live. For diehard fans, it doesn’t get much better than that! Upcoming events include an 80s music cruise featuring Rick Springfield, a Smooth Jazz voyage, and a Star Trek cruise. With this many options, we’re sure that there’s high sea adventures for everyone. Bon voyage!
