he Sonoran Desert, spanning more than 120,000 square miles, is home to a large number of diverse and extraordinary animal species. These creatures are often considered exotic and enchanting. How many of these desert beauties have you seen in the wild?
Known as “Charleston’s Beach Town,” Folly invites visitors to slow down, relax, and stay a while. This barrier island is only 12 square miles but is chock-full with a variety of fun activities. Six miles are dedicated to wide, sandy beaches perfect for leisure and play. Visitors can try biking, kayaking, boating, fishing, and eco-tours. The island also is home to a number of endangered species and wildlife including logger head turtles, dolphins, and bald eagles. You may not realize it, but there are 350 types of unique birds in the Sonoran Desert. The Gambel’s Quail, one of the most identifiable species due to its comma-shaped topknot of black feathers atop its head, is known to travel in groups called coveys. Another fascinating bird found in the Sonoran Desert is the Roadrunner (beep, beep!). This long-legged, long-tailed bird is incredibly fast on land for a flying bird, running at speeds up to 26 miles per hour. Another desert native is the Cactus Wren, with white and black spots covering its body and long white eyebrows. Birds are not the only interesting wildlife found in this desert. The Long-nosed Leopard Lizard shows color changes during its dark and light phases. For example, during the light phase, this lizard displays its leopard pattern in a wide range of colors, and in the dark phase, it has light rows across its body. Another, more dangerous lizard in the region is the Gila Monster, which can be identified by its large, stocky body and the bumps on its skin in a range of brown to pink hues. Interestingly, this species is the root of many legends that the lizard can control the weather or even has healing powers. But what other animals make the desert such a fascinating place? The Sonoran Desert is not just home to birds and lizards, but to species from every kingdom. The Antelope Jackrabbit, for example, has distinctive markings, so if you are searching for it, look for its large ears bordered with a white halo and its white underside against its tan backside. Another animal to keep an eye out for is the Collared Peccary, also known as javelina, which resembles a small pig with dark gray and brown fur. Despite common belief, they are an intelligent and emotional species. You may be fortunate enough to visit the Sonoran Desert and enjoy spotting the wildlife and taking in the breathtaking views. We often take for granted the beauty in nature, so it is important to appreciate and admire the world around us.

CAST IRON PLANT – This houseplant is just as tough as its name suggests. The lush, long leaves aren’t particular about their light environment and can withstand a missed watering or two without withering. Insects and disease rarely bother at this plant, making this one of the most stress-free plants to put in your home. PEACE LILY – These flowers flourish in summer but produce lovely white blossoms year-round. You’ll only need to tend to them about once a week. They give great visual cues to the care they need, wilting when they want water and perking right up when they receive it. Medium to bright light is best, but Peace Lilies also can tolerate low-light environments.
PETITE ORCHID – An orchid in bloom makes a stunning statement. Although they look impressive, they are relatively low maintenance. You’ll only need to water it every few weeks and find it a home in bright but indirect sunlight. The orchid will reward you with colorful blossoms once a year that can last up to three months. SUCCULENTS AND CACTI – As a desert-dweller, you’re probably familiar with succulents and cacti common to the area. But small versions can make ideal indoor plants. Able to withstand harsh desert conditions in nature, these plants won’t be hurt by heat, strong light, or little water.
PILEA PEPEROMIOIDES – If you like the look of lily pads, this plant is for you. The tropical, leafy plant is not only pretty but easy to care for. The soil requires time to dry between waterings and can be tested quickly with your finger. When it’s healthy, the pilea peperomioides will self-propagate and you’ll see small leaves popping out around the main plant. Plus, this houseplant is non-toxic, making it safe for the pets in your home.

Water

Warm Corn Tortillas
3 cloves
Garlic, Peeled
5 to 6
Shredded Chicken Breasts
4 tsp
Chicken Flavor Bouillon
DIRECTIONS Place 3 cups cilantro, media crema, water, garlic, and bouillon in blender; cover. Blend until smooth. Melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Stir in cilantro mixture. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil and thickens slightly. Season with ground black pepper, if desired. Pour sauce over chicken breasts. Serve with warm corn tortillas, diced tomatoes, onions, green bell peppers and chopped cilantro.
