ABOUT THE SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE
Founded in 1982 by Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale has flourished as one of the longest-running professional music organizations in New Mexico and is among the most distinguished professional chamber choirs in America. Performing in the historic Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe and other treasured venues throughout New Mexico, the Chorale has woven itself into the heart of the region’s cultural life. The organization’s annual Summer Festival has grown into one of the nation’s largest choral events, and thousands of locals and tourists consider the Chorale’s Winter Festival a beloved holiday tradition.
The Desert Chorale brings together 24 exceptional professional singers from across the United States, carefully selected for their artistry and musicianship. The Dallas Morning News referred to the ensemble as “a top-notch, 24-voice group…comprising the crème de la crème of professional choral singers from coast to coast.”
Under the artistic leadership of Joshua Habermann since 2008, the Chorale performs a rich and expansive repertoire spanning seven centuries, from early polyphony to vibrant contemporary works. This distinctive artistic vision has earned recognition from the Santa Fe New Mexican as “a rara avis in the choral music world.”
The ensemble has toured across the nation, performing in major cities including Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The Desert Chorale was honored to headline the 2025 National Conference of the American Choral Directors
Association at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, following a previous appearance at the ACDA National Conference in Salt Lake City in 2015.
The organization is deeply committed to championing contemporary composers. The Chorale has commissioned over 30 new works and premiered numerous additional pieces, fostering the vital creation of new choral music. Through the organization’s Commissioning Club, supporters have the opportunity to help select and fund a new commission annually.
The Desert Chorale’s commercial recording, The Road Home, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Classical Chart. The ensemble is excited to release their new album Roots & Rivers in Summer 2026, featuring works by American composers written especially the Chorale.
While nationally recognized, the organization is dedicated to building meaningful connections within its Northern New Mexican community. Since 2016, the beloved annual Santa Fe Sings! workshop has brought together music enthusiasts of all backgrounds to experience the joy of singing together under Habermann’s direction. Through the Insights & Sounds program, the Chorale offers free mini concerts for children, thought-provoking symposiums exploring choral music, and enriching educational workshops and masterclasses for local high school students.

Tonight’s program, Luminaria, traces the arc of the Christmas story across centuries and continents, moving from the hushed awe of the Nativity to the radiant joy of celebration. We begin with the traditional Irish carol The Darkest Midnight in December, whose haunting modal melody captures the quiet wonder of the longest night of the year. A solo voice opens in stillness, like a candle in the dark, before the full choir joins in radiant affirmation: “with shepherds we are come.” The gentle drone evokes both the sound of traditional folk music and the timeless hum of creation itself.
Jean Mouton’s Nesciens Mater, a masterpiece of Renaissance polyphony, turns the focus inward. Its resplendent counterpoint, woven from just a few phrases that seem to unfold endlessly, celebrates the Virgin Mary’s miraculous motherhood. Each line, perfectly balanced, reflects the serenity and symmetry of divine mystery.
Alexander Campkin’s The Crimson Sun brings us into a more recent era. Richly harmonic and rhythmically fluid, it sets a contemporary text in praise of light, rising to dispel the world’s shadows. Ron Kean’s The Rose that Bare Jesu, by contrast, juxtaposes English poetry from the 15th century with a modern musical language to invite the listener into serene contemplation.
Jonathan Dove’s Ring Out, Wild Bells, excerpted here from his larger work The Passing of the Year, ushers in a new tone of exultation. Tennyson’s poetry calls for renewal and moral clarity, asking us to “ring out the false, ring in the true.” Dove’s setting bursts with rhythmically brilliant piano writing and luminous choral harmonies, ultimately gathering into a simple unison note that embodies the hope and tender promise of a new year.
Fresh from the world premiere of his new commission Two Psalms for the Soul, written for the Desert Chorale 2025 Summer Festival, Cuban-American composer Ernesto Herrera contributes O Magnum Mysterium II, a modern setting of the ancient Christmas text. Herrera’s music shimmers with mystery and reverence, the harmonies expanding like light through stained glass—an echo of Mouton’s Renaissance serenity, refracted through a modern lens.
For the next set, we journey south to Latin America with Ariel Ramírez’s Navidad Nuestra. These folkinspired scenes: La Peregrinación (The Pilgrimage) and El Nacimiento (The Birth), reimagine the Nativity taking place in the Pampas of Argentina. Dancelike rhythms and tuneful melodies also characterize Esta Noche (Alegría) a beloved villancico (Christmas carol) that traces its origins
to Spain. With its festive energy and playful syncopation, it remains a popular tune in the Americas, where it is sung in Hispanic communities from the Caribbean, to Mexico, to here in the Southwest.
We then return briefly to quiet contemplation with Richard Rodney Bennett’s Lullay Mine Liking, a delicate cradle song that is at once sophisticated and tender. This leads into Saunder Choi’s arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High, which starts with chant before bursting forth in rhythmic joy.
Irving Berlin’s White Christmas captures the nostalgic warmth of holiday gatherings, leading us into Shawn Kirchner’s O What a Beautiful City. This piece draws inspiration from Orthodox sacred music, marrying it with influences from American gospel music in an inspired vision of heaven. The program closes with a signature Desert Chorale experience as we surround you with the sound of 24 of the nation’s finest vocalists. May the sound of these voices bring you comfort and joy this holiday season.
— Joshua Habermann
A PROGRESSIVE CHURCH FOR ALL SEASONS

The Darkest Midnight in December
The darkest midnight in December, No snow, no hail, no winter storm Shall hinder us for to remember, the Babe that on this night was born. With shepherds we are come to see this lovely infant’s glorious charms. Born of a maid as prophets said, the God of love in Mary’s arms.
— Traditional Irish Carol
Nesciens Mater (sung in Latin)
Jean Mouton (1459-1522)
Nesciens mater virgo virum peperit sine dolore salvatorem sæculorum. Ipsum regem angelorum sola virgo lactabat, ubere de cælo pleno.
— Antiphon for the Octave of Christmas
The Crimson Sun
Alexander Campkin (b. 1984)
When the crimson sun had set Low behind the wintry sea, On the bright And cold midnight Burst a sound of heavenly glee: Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Where the manger crib is laid, In the city fair and free, Hand in hand, This shepherds band Worship Christ on bended knee. Gloria in excelsis Deo!
The Virgin mother, who knew no man, painlessly bore the Saviour of all ages. It was only the Virgin that nursed the King of angels at her breast filled with the milk of heavenly goodness.
Join with us in welcome song, Ye who in Christ’s Home abide, Sing the Love Of God above, Shown at happy Christmas-tide. Gloria in excelsis Deo!
— George P. Grantham (1833-1909)
The
Rose that Bare Jesu
Ron Kean (b. 1951)
There is no rose of such vertu As is the rose that bare Jesu; Alleluia.
For in this rose contained was Heaven and earth in little space; Res miranda (Beautiful).
By that rose we may well see That he is God in persons three. The angels sungen the shepherds to:
Ring Out, Wild Bells from The Passing of the Year
Jonathan Dove (b. 1959)
O Earth, O Earth, return!
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light: The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.
Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true.
Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind.
O Magnum Mysterium II (sung in Latin)
Ernesto Herrera (b. 1988)
O magnum mysterium, et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in praesepio!
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. Alleluia!
— Matins of Christmas
Gloria in excelsis deo: Gaudeamus (Let us rejoice)
Leave we all this worldly mirth, And follow we this joyful birth; Transeamus (Let us cross over).
— Traditional English Carol
Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the time; Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes, But ring the fuller minstrel in.
Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace.
— Alfred Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)
O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger!
Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Christ. Alleluia!
La Peregrinación from Navidad Nuestra (sung in Spanish)
Ariel Ramírez
(1921-2010)
A la huella, a la huella, José y María, Por las pampas heladas, Cardos y ortigas.
A la huella, a la huella, Cortando campo. No hay cobijo, ni fonda. Sigan andando.
— Felix Luna (1925-2009)
Follow the trail, follow the trail, Joseph and Mary, Across the frozen plains, Thistles and nettles.
Follow the trail, follow the trail, Cutting through the fields. There is no shelter, no inn. Keep on walking.
Little flower in the field, Carnation of the air, If no one shelters you, Where will you be born?
Where will you be born, little flower? Now that you are growing, Frightened dove, Sleepless cricket.
Follow the trail, follow the trail, Joseph and Mary, With a hidden god Nobody knew.
Follow the trail, follow the trail. The pilgrims Lend me a humble shelter For my child.
Follow the trail, follow the trail, Suns and moons. Little almond eyes, Olive skin.
Oh, little donkey in the field, Oh, red-grey ox, Oh, my child is coming. Make a place for him.
A thatched hut Is the only shelter I have, Two friendly breaths (the ox and the donkey), The bright moon.
Follow the trail, follow the trail, Joseph and Mary, With a hidden god Nobody knew.
— Felix Luna (1925-2009)
Esta Noche (Alegría) (sung in Spanish) arr. John Rutter (b. 1945)
Refrain
— Traditional Spanish Carol
Lullay Mine Liking
arr. Richard Rodney Bennett (1936-2012)
Lullay mine Liking, my dear Son, my Sweeting; Lullay my dear Heart, mine own dear Darling.
I saw a fair maiden sitten and sing: She lulled a little Child, a sweete Lording.
That Eternal Lord is he that made alle thing; Of alle Lordes He is Lord, of ev’ry King He’s King.
Night foretold, night of love, God is born, petal and flower, All is silence and serenity, Peace to all men, Christmas is here.
In the manger my redeemer He is the messenger of peace and love, When he smiles there is light And on his arms, a cross grows.
Let angels sing over the portal, God is born, Christmas is here.
This is the night that was promised By God to mankind, and now it has arrived, It’s Christmas Eve, no sleep tonight. God is born, God is here.
Tonight a child is born amidst frost and ice. If only I could, little child dress you up in velvet!
Refrain: Happiness and joy, Happiness and pleasure, Tonight a child is born in a manger in Bethlehem.
The Virgin is washing with a little bar of soap. Her hands are sore, Hands of my heart.
Refrain
There was mickel (much) melody at that Childes birth: Through the song from Heven came, they made mickel mirth.
Angels bright they sang that night and saiden to that Child: “Blessed be Thou and so be she that is both meek and mild.”
Pray we now to that Child as to his Mother dear; To grant them all his blessing that now maken cheer.
— Traditional Medieval Carol
Angels We Have Heard on High (sung in Latin and English)
arr. Saunder Choi (b. 1988)
Angeli canunt praecones nuper natum Dominum Pacem nobis, veniamque erga genus humanum Gentes surgite gaudentes, cum caelicolis canentes Dei Filium, Regem, natum iam in Bethlehem Ecce, canunt angeli gloriam novo Regi! Amen.
Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains, And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heavenly songs? Gloria in excelsis Deo!
See Him in a manger laid, Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth; Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, With us sing our Savior’s birth. Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria in excelsis Deo!
— Traditional French Carol
White Christmas arr. Clay Warnick (1915-1995)
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas Just like the ones I used to know, Where the treetops glisten and children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow.
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write. May your days be merry and bright, And may all your Christmases be white.
— Irving Berlin (1888-1989)
Angels sing news of the newborn Lord
Bringing mercy and peace to all humanity. The nations rejoice, singing with the heavenly host The Son of God, the King, is born in Bethlehem. Behold the angels sing the new glory of the King! Amen.

O What a Beautiful City
arr. Shawn Kirchner (b. 1970)
Refrain:
Halleluia! Oh what a beautiful city!
O what a beautiful city!
O what a beautiful city!
Twelve gates to the city, Halleluia!
Have you heard about the city? The streets are paved with gold! Halleluia!
Refrain
Three gates in the East!
Three gates in the West!
Three gates in the North!
Three gates in the South! Twelve gates to the city, Halleluia!
See those gates of pearl, Open to all the world.
Twelve gates to the city, Halleluia!
Refrain
— Traditional Spiritual
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Elizabeth Poston (1905-1987)
The tree of life my soul hath seen, Laden with fruit and always green: The trees of nature fruitless be Compared with Christ the apple tree.
His beauty doth all things excel: By faith I know, but ne’er can tell The glory which I now can see In Jesus Christ the apple tree.
For happiness I long have sought, And pleasure dearly I have bought: I missed of all; but now I see ‘Tis found in Christ the apple tree.
I’m weary with my former toil, Here I will sit and rest awhile: Under the shadow I will be, Of Jesus Christ the apple tree.
This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, It keeps my dying faith alive; Which makes my soul in haste to be With Jesus Christ the apple tree.
— Traditional English Carol

About the Commissioning Club
Each year, members of the Commissioning Club meet under the guidance of Artistic Director Joshua Habermann to choose an emerging composer who will write a work to be premiered by the Desert Chorale during an upcoming summer season. This important work helps to expand the choral canon for choruses around the world and ensure the legacy of the Desert Chorale as one of the country’s leading chamber choirs. The club builds on the Desert Chorale’s rich history of over 30 commissioned choral works, with the most recent forming the heart of our our upcoming Roots & Rivers album.
Join the Santa Fe Desert Chorale Commissioning Club and become part of choral music history! A $1,000 contribution per person toward the composer’s commissioning fee is all that is required to help bring a new piece of music to life. Club members are invited to attend the dress rehearsal of the new work, enjoy a private meal with the composer, and receive an archival recording and signed score of the commissioned work.
For more information and to join the Commissioning Club, please email commissioningclub@desertchorale.org.
