Mary Catherine Alexander Tribute Program

Page 1

Mary Catherine Alexander, born on January 10, 1933, in Houston, Texas, to Harrison Bryant and Mary Louise Francis, was one of two daughters. Tragically, her mother passed away when she was just three years old, her father married Edythe Josphine Boston who raised them.

After graduating from Phyllis Wheatley High School, Mary Catherine moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1950, where she attended the University of Denver (DU) and met her future husband, Lawrence Velton Glover. They were blessed with three children: Lawrence, Lynette, and Sharon.

However, after the passing of her husband at a young age, Mary Catherine was blessed again when she married Reverend Major Warren D. Alexander in April 1962. Reverend Alexander was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base.

Mary Catherine’s professional journey began at Methodist Church headquarters in Denver, where she served as an Administrative Assistant. Later, she joined the University of Denver (DU) as an Administrator in the Vice Chancellor’s office.

In addition to her professional pursuits, Mary Catherine was actively involved in various community organizations. She was a PTA President at her children’s school, Smith Elementary. She led the Junior Girl Scouts Troop, was a member of the Northeast Park Hill Civic Association, and volunteered for the Metro Denver Fair Housing Center. She was also a long-standing member of the Les Bon Ami Social Club, a Silhouette with the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, an Owlet with the Owl Club of Denver, and hosted several Tuskegee Airmen Hooks Jones local chapter meetings in her home.

Throughout her life, Mary Catherine was a devoted wife and mother, taking pride in being the matriarch of her family.

Mary Catherine, a woman of God, and her husband Warren ensured that their children were raised and actively involved in the church. They were members of Park Hill United Methodist Church (PHUMC) and were one of the early African American families to integrate the church.

Mary Catherine is preceded in death by her parents, sister Dorothy, husband Lawrence Velton Glover, husband Warren D. Alexander, and son-in-law Barry Booker. Those left to cherish her memory include her three children, Lawrence (Judith) Alexander, Lynette Alexander Booker, and Sharon Alexander Holt; four grandchildren, Tyree (Stacey) Booker, Jamee Booker, and Sheena Holt; Brandon {Ada} Johnson and nine great-grandchildren, Jayla, Jasmyne, Bryant, Baylen, Carlos (CJ), Josiah, Moriah, Kade and Knox; along with a host of family and friends.
