A NOTE
FROM THE In this, my first annual report as President & CEO of the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), it is my responsibility to give you an accounting of our year…through facts and figures. However, first I want to share the most important takeaway I have learned since joining the DCPA — it is about the people. The artists and their artistry. The students and our educators. The community and its rich culture. It is about you — our guest, our supporter and our partner. Our artists work tirelessly every day to tell stories through incredible artistry. They bring tales both old and new, real and make believe, heart-wrenching and gut-busting to life for your enjoyment. Whether it is stitching a costume, painting a set or rehearsing every scene to perfection, our artisans are committed to their craft. Our educators inspire students in schools, classrooms, libraries, theatres and even in parking lots. They take a blank canvas and mesmerize students, instill confidence, inspire creativity and teach them that they can stand in a spotlight and be worthy of thunderous applause. Our community embraces what we do on our stage, with our students and in our venues with their presence, their gifts and their loyalty. 2016/17 was unprecedented. Residents in the sevencounty metro area overwhelmingly approved a continuation of the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District, ensuring regional funding for the arts and illustrating the community’s ongoing appreciation for culture. Additionally, for the first time in our history, we had more demand for subscriptions than we could fill. In fact, we had 28,364 subscribers and 10,000 on a waiting list. Plus an additional 400,000 individuals who purchased single tickets. They represent a total of 608,870 tickets distributed and an economic impact of $115 million. The following pages give you the facts and figures, but here are just a few of the many highlights you will see. We were delighted to name Martin Semple as the DCPA’s third

Board Chair, to net $1 million at our annual fundraiser, Saturday Night Alive, and to launch Theatre for Young Audiences for PreK through third grade youth. We broadened our access by expanding our $10 program by 28%, welcomed 67% more theatre patrons to our post-show discussions, and added the advancement of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as a core value, which is now reflected in our hiring practices, staff training and programming. Additionally, we established a cross-functional team of employees to determine how we can more fully engage our community. As we closed out the fiscal year, we were working alongside Disney Theatricals on the pre-Broadway debut of Frozen. This multi-year endeavor opened in Denver in Fall 2017 and showcased the importance of our 20-year relationship with Disney. For all of these accomplishments, we thank you. SCFD
ACCESS FOR EVERYONE In 1988, metro area citizens voted to tax themselves 1¢ on $10 to ensure broad access to our area’s cultural attractions. Nearly 40 years later, that tax has become the nation’s strongest example of public funding for the arts. The Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) now draws in more than $56 million a year and, in turn, distributes those funds to 275 organizations. This past fall, voters in the sevencounty metro area were asked to renew their commitment to the SCFD and they did — in an overwhelming show of support. And in return, they’ve made it possible for organizations such as the DCPA to broaden its reach and welcome new audiences through many programs including:
