Welcome to our second home game of the season against Holywell Town.
After playing our last ‘home’ game at Maes Tegid, Bala, this time we’re having to host the game here at Colwyn Bay’s Blue Turtle Arena this evening as our pitch and facilities at Central Park are undergoing some huge alterations, as many of you will be aware.
We’d like to thank Colwyn Bay FC for agreeing to let us play here tonight, and I’d like to welcome the players, management teams, committee members and supporters of both teams to the Blue Turtle Arena tonight.
Work at Central Park continues at a pace as we strive to have work in place for our planned first home game of the season on Friday, 5th September It’s a tight schedule, although I am confident that we will make it in time
It has been a logistical nightmare having to rearrange fixtures so that we can host our games at venues such as Bala and Colwyn Bay. In years gone by, we would have asked that we simply switch our fixtures so that we play our first few games away from home, but the FAW now insist that we have so many games at home and so many away and that these are spread evenly throughout the season
Financially, we lose out, as our gate income is likely to be down on these ‘home’ games that we play away from Central Park. We also lose out on our bar and kitchen incomes for these games, as it is only fair that Bala and Colwyn Bay take the revenue from these sources. We are also having to pay rent to hire the grounds for these games
So, it is vital for the running of the Club that we return to Central Park as soon as possible, and I would like to thank all our supporters for bearing with us over the start of the season. It will be worth the wait as we will have a superb facility at Central Park once all the work is completed. We are charging admission to our ‘home’ games away from Central Park at £7 adults, £5 concessions, and £2 for Under 16s unaccompanied by an adult This is the same price as our admission prices to Central Park last season
We are also issuing Season Tickets at £75 for adults, £50 for concessions and £20 for under 16s. These offer admission to our First Team, Reserves and Ladies home games. These are the same prices as last season, and already there has been a good take-up as people look to support the Club, and I’d like to think these Season Tickets represent excellent value for money
When we return to Central Park admission prices for First Team games will be increased slightly to £8 adults, £6 concessions and £2 for under 16s unaccompanied by an adult. This is very similar to admission prices charged by other Clubs across the JD Cymru North
Focus now turns to tonight’s game against Holywell, who have had a good start to the season with two wins out of two games. – one Cup and one League. They are always tough opponents and will be aiming once again to be one of the front-runners in the League this season.
We ourselves have had three wins so far – two Cup and one League – and Dewi has strengthened the squad over the last fortnight with some new additions It bodes for a fascinating evening
Enjoy the game.
Good evening and a warm welcome to our home for the evening – the Blue Turtle Arena here at Colwyn Bay. Many thanks to all the Colwyn Bay officials for helping us out by allowing us to play tonight’s league game here against Holywell.
We’ve now played three games this season and won all three which is obviously what we wanted. Nevertheless, I don’t think we are where we want to be in terms of match performances Within the last three games we’ve had good spells of possession and been able to dictate games but this needs to be better as we want to be in control for a lot longer periods and make our games easier.
Last weekend at Rhyl 1879 in the Nathaniel MG Cup was a decent team performance on a good Belle Vue pitch, albeit a little hard due to the time of year It was an even game in a cagey first half with neither side making any real inroads The second half we played better as we became more forceful and increased the tempo of our play.
Nathan Brown gave us the lead with a superb strike after some great work from Tom Weir When they went down to ten men after a sending off, we should have dealt better with us having the extra man. However, we allowed them to come back into the game as they equalised with a first class free kick Our second goal was something else with some great one touch football between Tom Weir and Keelan Williams as they linked up quickly for Keelan to break into the penalty area and blast home.
But then our game management went to pieces as we allowed them to equalise in the last minute and so force the game to penalties. I have stressed to the lads that if we are leading by a goal and the game is almost over, we must retain possession of the ball. Don’t allow them an opportunity to equalise
The penalty shoot-out was something else Has anyone ever experienced anything like that – I certainly haven’t. Fair play to our debutant keeper Cameron Darling for his vital saves as we came out winners 11-10.
Alongside Cameron who has joined us form Llandudno, and who did well in his first appearance, we have also added two outfield players to our squad. Bradley Barnes, a young versatile forward joins us on loan from Connah’s Quay Nomads having previously been with Stoke’s academy Aidan Higgins joins us having been at Manchester United’s academy and Swansea City’s academy and made three appearances for Wales U16s. Both lads came on and impressed against Rhyl and are in the squad for this evening
Alfie Vaughan is also due to return from injury having had a wrist operation during the close season. Competition for places within the starting line-up is strong and this bodes well for the season ahead. Tonight, we face a well fancied Holywell who have also got off to a good start They had a great 2-1 win over JD Cymru Premier side Flint Town United last week in the Nathaniel MG Cup and must be on a high after that. We know the style of play that their manager Johnny Haseldin likes to play and it’s up to us to combat this and create as many chances as possible
Thanks for travelling to Colwyn Bay to support us. All the squad and management team really appreciate it.
Denbigh Town are through to the Third Round of the Nathaniel MG Cup following a first shoot-out win in 20 years.
Goals from Nathan Brown and Keelan Williams edged Denbigh in front twice, only for a stoppage time equaliser to send us to spot kicks
After 28 penalties in total in one of the most dramatic shoot-outs you’ll see, it was eventually Denbigh who went through 10-11
It took nine minutes for the first opportunity of the second period as Morgan Murray found himself with space on the edge of the box, but could only fire wide of the mark
Just after the hour mark Higgins made his debut and just a minute later the game sprang to life Tom Weir fed the ball to Brown who at distance smashed the ball into the top left corner of the net for the lead
It sees Town into the Third Round stage for the first time since 2015 where Denbigh went all the way to the Final
Dewi Llion made three changes to the XI that beat Caersws eight days previous as Max Cooke and Owen Payne came in whilst Cameron Darling made his debut in goal. On the bench Brad Barnes featured for the first time whilst Aidan Higgins was announced moments before the teams, having joined the club following his time with Swansea City, Higgins also featured on the bench
On a hot day on the North Wales coast it took eight minutes for the first chance of note when a cross from the right was headed into the side netting by Dylan Proctor Five minutes later Jack Parry almost put the hosts in front when a run from Ben Lawrence to the right of the box saw him square it oto the forward but drag his effort wide
Denbigh’s first chance of note came on 18 minutes when Williams ran down the middle but was hacked down from behind by Rocco Hewitt, with the latter shown a yellow card Brown from the resulting free kick struck it towards goal with ‘keeper Flynn Proctor spilling the ball before it deflected over the bar Brown was involved again just after the half hour mark when Williams’ low cross found him to the left of the box but his half volley was harmless.
Moments later Hewitt was involved when he was adjudged to have fouled Cooke, and shown a second yellow, reducing Rhyl to ten
Despite having a man less Rhyl fought back and Murray stood over a free-kick on 71 minutes He ran up and smashed the ball into the bottom right corner to level the score
With three minutes to play the game was on a knifeedge, and Weir once again as provider played it to Williams who burst through and stabbed the ball into the bottom right corner.
Three minutes into injury time, though there was a chance for a final twist. A long ball into the box was headed on by Paul Fleming and finished by Leo Latter to send us to a shoot-out.
In the chaos of the penalties, both sides took a total of 14 each with Rhyl given the chance to win it on a number of occasions However, in sudden death following Barnes’ conversion, Reece Fairhurst couldn’t follow up and Town head through to Round Three
Subs: Beattie, Beaumont, James, Roberts, J,Duffy, Higgins, Barnes
Referee: Aled Williams
POTM: Max Cooke - An advanced role for the 19-year-old who performed well throughout.
Attendance: 455
Denbigh Town Reserves return to league action in tonight with a trip to NFA.
Just a few miles up the coast Liam Nash’s side will begin the FAW National Reserve League North against Rhyl based NFA with a new-look squad for 2025/26.
Nash has made a number of additions over the summer with the young squad looking to compete in a revamped division.
Fixtures for the opening 15 games of the season have now been revealed with plenty of mouth watering clashes coming up.
Town will of course face Vale of Clwyd rivals Ruthin with the fixture coming up on November 1 at the Memorial Playing Fields. Meanwhile we’ll also face a newly formed Rhyl 1879 Reserves side at Belle Vue on October 19th. st
In the opening month Town face three away trips including tonight’s clash at Derwen Playing Fields.
In two weeks time the Reserves head to Holywell Town before a clash at Gresford Athletic to close out the opening trio.
For full fixtures for the Reserves check out the website at www.denbightownfc.co.uk.
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1876 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.
The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.
The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s
Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles
After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years.
The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.
In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010 In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television
Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back
Ground: Halkyn Road
Capacity: 2,000
Nickname: The Wellmen
Founded: 1880
2024/25: 3rd
Manager: Johnny Haseldin
Holywell’s first club was initially formed in 1880 before the current iteration was established 66 years later In 1946, former soldiers who had been demobilised and returned home from fighting in World War II established the club at Halkyn Road, where it has played its home games ever since.
It was also around this period that the moniker of The Wellmen was adopted by the club, a nickname which the club still uses to this day After cup successes further achievements came to Holywell when they joined the Welsh League (North) in the 1949–50 season In the 1952–53 season when Holywell Town became the Welsh League (North) champions for the first and only time
Holywell Town maintained their membership of the Welsh League (North) for 17 consecutive seasons from the 1949–50 season until the 1965–66 season, when they finished bottom of the league and just one point behind 14th-placed side Blaenau Ffestiniog Thereafter, Holywell Town left the Welsh League (North) and played in the local football leagues
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Holywell played in the local football league system, most notably in the Clwyd League in the 1986–87 season, the club finally earned some silverware when they won the Clwyd League Premier Division title as well as triumphing in the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup to earn a league and cup double The club continued to earn silverware during that period when they successfully defended their Clwyd League Premier Division title in the following season, winning it for the second time in a row
Holywell Town were selected to become founder members of the Cymru Alliance In spite of Holywell's lowly league placements, they left the Cymru Alliance to ascend to become one of the founding members of the newly created national league - the League of Wales - for the 1992–93 season
Under the management of Glyn Griffiths, aided by the 17 league goals from Ian Howat, and possessing the joint-third best defence in the league with just 48 goals conceded, the club finished the first LoW season in 6th position This made Holywell the best-performing founding member to originate from the Cymru Alliance but were relegated two years later They were promoted back to the top flight a year later but would return to the Cymru Alliance after a season Although they saw an improvement to fortunes under the guidance of Andy Nicholls during the 2004–05 season, by finishing in 9th position, they were eventually relegated to the Welsh Alliance League in the following season when they finished 17th in the league, nine points adrift of safety, and with only their local rival Halkyn United below them Holywell won their first piece of silverware in thirteen years, by beating Conwy United 3–2 in the FAW Trophy at the neutral venue of Belle Vue, Rhyl
For the start of the 2012–13 season, Mike Thomas was replaced as Holywell manager by their club captain, Johnny Haseldin, who adopted a player-manager role After nine years of competing in the Welsh Alliance League, the 2014–15 season became Holywell's time to shine when they finally clinched the Division 1 title As well as claiming the Welsh Alliance League title, Holywell Town also earned themselves further silverware when they won the FAW Trophy and Mawddach Cup The club would drop back into the third tier in 2019
Despite agonisingly suffering relegation from the Cymru Alliance, Holywell Town's hiatus from the second tier would only last a season They managed to clinch the WNL Premier title and gain promotion back to the now-named Cymru North, albeit on a superior points-per-game (PPG) ratio after the Welsh football season was halted and concluded due to the COVID-19 pandemic In their first season back in the Cymru North, Holywell Town finished the 2021-22 campaign in fourth position The 2022–23 season proved to be even more successful for Holywell as the club achieved a second-place finish in the league, their best league performance in the Welsh football pyramid since their last appearance in the League of Wales in the 1998-99 season A year later the Wellmen secured the Cymru North league title
