Welcome back to football in the JD Cymru North with our first home game of the season against Caersws.
We’re having to host the game here at Bala’s Maes Tegid ground this evening as our pitch and facilities at Central Park are undergoing some huge alterations, as many of you will be aware
We’d like to thank Bala Town FC for agreeing to let us play here tonight, and I’d like to welcome the players, management teams, committee members and supporters of both teams to Maes Tegid tonight The close season has seen a huge amount of work being carried out at Central Park.
Our pitch has had to be lengthened to tie in with UEFA regulations to allow us to host Internationals at the UEFA Euro Under 19s tournament to be held in North Wales in June 2026 We are one of five grounds in North Wales that will hold games in this most prestigious tournament, along with Wrexham, Bangor, Colwyn Bay and Caernarfon
Not only has our pitch had to be lengthened, it has also had to have its width narrowed. In lengthening the pitch we have had to buy additional land off Denbighshire County Council, and tons and tons of soil have had to be removed from the ground to facilitate this lengthening of the pitch We are having an additional four floodlights alongside our existing eight and these will all be LED lights and having the required electrical needs for the tournament.
Two extra 50-seat stands are in the process of being built to be placed on the dugout side of the ground, with new 22-seater dugouts being installed A TV gantry and VAR room will also be in situ by the time the tournament starts
Our new community facility is almost completed and is a most impressive structure It holds four changing rooms and a large kitchen area downstairs. Upstairs is a large function room/meeting place with a bar, together with doors opening onto a balcony area, giving superb views of the pitch and the Vale of Clwyd
We, as a Club, are so excited about this project, and we aim to host our first home game on 5th September against Buckley Town.
We could not have done any of this work without the substantial financial help provided by the FAW. They have been so supportive of the work we are carrying out and we are so grateful for their assistance.Further financial help has been provided by Cronfa Wind Farms, Denbighshire County Council, Freeman Evans Trust and the National Lottery We have been so fortunate to have had support from all these organisations are we will be forever in gratitude to them
We have endeavoured to have as much of the work carried out by local tradesmen as well as having materials bought from local suppliers.
We cannot wait to hold our first game at the improved ground, but tonight, concentration has to be here at Bala
Let’s hope Dewi and the lads get off to a winning start. Enjoy the game and have a safe journey home
Good evening and a warm welcome to our home for the evening – Bala Town’s Maes Tegid. Many thanks to Nigel, Ruth and the Bala Town Committee for helping us out by allowing us to play tonight’s League game here against Caersws.
It’s good to get back to the business of football again after one of the longest close seasons we’ve had for many years, with our last competitive game of last season being the 3-3 draw away to Gresford on April 12th. Since then, we’ve made a few additions to the squad with a couple of players moving on.
We’ve had a mixed pre-season Three of our original seven planned friendlies were cancelled due to various reasons by opposition teams Our first outing at Llannefydd ended in a 1-1 draw, followed by a 2-1 win at Llay Welfare, a ground where we have not won for several seasons
A 1-1 draw against a TNS XI was followed by a 9-2 loss to Connah's Quay Nomads. This loss obviously sounds bad, but this was a game played on a baking hot July night We had eight players who played the full 90 minutes, whereas Nomads used the game to field two different sides, playing ten outfield players in the first half and changing these ten for fresh legs in the second half We were in the game up until the 75th minute, having scored two second-half goals before Nomads’ fresh legs meant their fitness was better for the last fifteen minutes and this allowed them to score another four goals. Despite the result, we were not too despondent.
We played Nomads U21s a few days later to win 3-2 and then had our first competitive game last Friday at Prestatyn when we beat Flint Mountain 3-1 in the Nathaniel MG Cup We were not at our best in the first half as we battled to compete on what must have been one of the worst pitches I’ve ever seen for the first game of a season. The goalmouth resembled a field where my cows had spent a week grazing – it was awful.
The second half was a much better display, and we commanded the latter part of the game despite Flint Mountain giving us a few scares An equaliser from a typical Matty Worrall touch, a great leap from Ben Lockley to head home our second, was followed quickly by Nathan Brown drilling home our third which gave us a win meaning we face Rhyl 1879 in the next round.
The additions to the squad have all contributed during preseason Dan Flanders, who was on loan last season with us from Nomads, has now signed formally for us and is proving a valuable asset in defence Luke Johnston is a busy, skilful midfielder who joins us from TNS, having been on loan at Flint Mountain last season whilst up front Jacob Duffy, a promising young striker and brother of Sam Duffy, joins us. Tom Weir and Matthew Worrall have both been with us before as strikers, and when I knew they were available I was in touch as I knew of both their goalscoring prowess Finally, defender Owen Payne joins us from Llay, having previously been at Airbus He showed his quality with a worldy of a goal against Nomads when he lobbed the keeper from the halfway line
A word about my mate Matty Jones, who has been my assistant for the last few seasons and a great bloke to have alongside me He leaves to spend more time with his young family and he’s someone I will miss working with as he was always someone I could rely to give an honest opinion on matters on and off the field Good luck in the future, Matty
Tonight, we’re looking to get off to a winning start in the league against Caersws, who we beat at Central Park last season 2-0 and then drew 1-1 at their Recreation Ground. Enjoy the game
Flint Mountain 1-3 Denbigh Town
Denbigh Town’s first competitive game of the season got off to a flyer on Friday night as Dewi Llion’s side safely navigated through in the Nathaniel MG Cup.
A second-half fightback saw Town come from a goal down to clinch a victory via goals from Matthew Worrall, Ben Lockley and Nathan Brown
Whilst the opening 45 took it’s time to get going, it was full throttle from the off in the second. Dewi Llion made a triple change at the break handed Weir his second debut whilst Dan Flanders and Brown also came on for Payne, Keiron Roberts and Sion Jones
The manager handed three debuts in the starting XI as Owen Payne and Luke Johnston featured for the first time, whilst Worrall made his third debut for the club Meanwhile Tom Weir and Jacob Duffy featured on the bench
It took just three minutes for the first chance to come as Flint as a cross came in and found Owen Cassidy at the back stick, only for Elijah Beattie to make an impressive save. Two minutes later and Town had a chance of their own when Worrall chased down goalkeeper Stephen Bullen, only for his blocked effort to land in the shot stopper’s arms
The opening game on a difficult pitch seemed to limit chances in the first half, taking until eight minutes before the break for anything of note when Worrall ran on to a ball over the top but was denied with his effort one-on-one. The closest chance yet fell to Danny Clarke two minutes before the break when Keelan Williams’ cross found Clarke’s head, but his effort rattled the crossbar.
Just as it looked like Town were in the ascendancy though, it the hosts who found the breakthrough A ball down the left channel was crossed by Cassidy and met the head of debutant Jonny Bravo to hand Flint the lead
Eight minutes into the restart and a ball in from Flanders found the head of Beaumont but it was simple for the keeper, whilst a minute later a Denbigh break led to Brown feeding it to Weir who took his man on and curled an effort that was light work for Bullen Seconds later Mountain up the other end through Bravo saw the forward round Beattie only to find the side netting when he should have doubled the advantage.
The game had really come to life as Bravo was denied low by Beattie before Denbigh went up the other end via Brown who chipped the keeper from range, but it trickled wide Bravo was again involved on 56 minutes when his effort deflected and began to trickle wide only for Jonny O’Sullivan to get there and somehow miss the target from close range
On the hour mark Town came inches away from a leveller when Brown’s free-kick from 25-yards struck the left post, but it felt like something was brewing for the visitors. Finally, with 71 minutes on the clock they did restore parity. Worrall had an effort initially denied before it fell to Brown who directed it back towards goal and Worrall made sure to see it home to reopen his Denbigh account
Now Town had a taste for it and could have led on 78 minutes when Flanders’ ball in found Brown in space on the left of the box, but his volley flew just over
With five minutes to go and penalties a real possibility, Denbigh turned the screw Another ball in from Flanders this time met the head of Lockley who placed it in the top left corner for the lead
Without time to pause for a breath Town put themselves out of sight two minutes later when Weir slotted Brown through to drill the ball into the bottom right corner A milestone goal for the winger who draws level at fifth in the all-time recorded goal scorers for the club
Town saw themselves through comfortably in the final moments and will face a trip to Rhyl 1879 in the Second Round on August 1-2
Denbigh Town: Beattie, S Jones, Lockley, Payne, Beaumont, Williams, Roberts, Johnston, S Duffy, Clarke, Worrall
Subs: Cooke, Flanders, J.Duffy, Weir, Brown
Referee: Adam Herbert
POTM: Luke Johnston - A solid debut in the middle of the park as he covered every blade of grass in a great debut
Denbigh Town Reserves return to league action in August following a busy preseason campaign.
Manager Liam Nash has made a number of additions to the squad including some young talent ahead of life in a revamped Reserves system.
Rhys Lloyd returned to the club 10-months after departing and picking up experience in the Lock Stock Ardal North-West, whilst youngsters Jac Jones, Rowan Maxwell and Harley Walker all bring an injection of youth to the side. Other additions include Joel Duffy - brother to Jacob and Sam, Mackenzie Mallinson, Harry Gomez and Seann McFee - the latter of which has already spent time with the First Team in the summer.
Town began pre-season with a ten goal thriller up in Henllan before beating Rhuddlan Town 5-1 away from home.
Last time out the side took on fourth tier side Llansannan falling to a 6-1 loss but took plenty of positives against a side who will be fighting for a place in the third tier next season.
Nash’s side begin the campaign away to NFA on the weekend of August 8-9.
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1876 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.
The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.
The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s
Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles
After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years.
The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.
In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010 In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television
Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

Although founded in the late 19th century, the club enjoyed little if any success until the 1960s when it won the Mid-Wales League in 1959–60, 1960–61, and 1962–63, and appeared in three Welsh Amateur Cup finals, winning the cup in 1960–61.
They also won the cup (now renamed the Welsh Intermediate Cup) in 1989 In the league, the team's fortunes waned until they won the title again in 1978, and four more times before they were invited to join the Cymru Alliance in 1990. In 1992 they became founder members of the League of Wales.
Caersws won the League Cup in 2000–01 and 2001–02, and played in the Intertoto Cup, being defeated 3–1 on aggregate by PFC Marek Dupnitsa of Bulgaria.
Following relegation from the top flight in 2010 the side remained in the Cymru Alliance until falling to the third tier in 2018, but regained their second tier status via the Lock Stock Ardal North East title in 2023
