Please Do Not Feed Wildlife at Tortolita Preserve Submitted by Jason ‘Jay’ Grodman - Natural Resources Supervisor | Marana Parks and Recreation

The Town of Marana reminds visitors and nearby residents that feeding or placing food out for wildlife within the Tortolita Preserve is not permitted. While it may seem helpful or harmless, feeding wildlife can cause significant problems for both animals and people. Supplemental food can cause wildlife to become dependent on humans, alter their natural behaviors, attract animals into areas where they may be vulnerable to vehicles and other hazards, and increase the spread of disease. Food can also attract rodents, feral animals, and other unwanted species.

Political Election Season Refresher Reprinted and revised from August 2024 Newsletter by Communications Committee

Election season is officially in full swing! Below is a friendly reminder of political sign rules from the state of Arizona that apply to the community:  All political signs must comply with the Arizona State Statute 33-1808 and 16-1019.  Signs are permitted to be placed in the front yard on May 11, 2026 (71 days) before the July 21 Primary Election.  Signs endorsing a defeated candidate must be removed no later than 15 days after the Primary Election.  All signs must be removed no later than 15 days after the November 3, 2026 General Election, so by November 18, 2026.  Political flags are permitted and are considered a “sign per the revised Arizona Revised Statute §331808.  There is no limit to the number of signs – however, the total dimensions of all signs (including any flags) combined must not exceed 9 sq. ft (page 30 of the Design Guidelines).  Example: You could display 3 signs that are each 18” x 24”.  Example: You could display a 2 ft x 3 ft flag and one 18” x 24” sign • Any derogatory or disrespectful signs must be removed at the direction of the Board of Directors, per our Design Guidelines.  Door-to-door political activity cannot be prohibited, per Arizona State Statute.  Arizona Revised Statute 16-1019 states that it is a Class 2 misdemeanor to "knowingly remove, alter, deface or cover any political sign of any candidate for public office or in support of or opposition to any ballot measure...".  A property owner must give permission for signs to be installed on private property.

Wildlife that becomes accustomed to people and human-provided food can become aggressive or lose its natural fear of humans, creating safety concerns for hikers, bicyclists, and other Preserve users. Please help us keep wildlife wild. Enjoy observing animals in their natural habitat, but do not feed them or leave food, water, or other attractants for them. Your cooperation helps protect the health and safety of both wildlife and the people who enjoy the Tortolita Preserve.

Beat the Heat with Mini Workouts - Part 1

Active Aging Specialist

Five simple ways to keep moving and stay strong at home Got ten minutes? Let’s move! It’s still hot in September, and by now maybe you’ve grown a little weary of navigating daily activities and chores through the “dog days of summer.” For some, that may mean workouts have been put on the back burner - or completely ignored. Let’s face it: the Arizona heat can be draining. But there’s a way to keep your body moving in a healthy way without spending hours in the gym, needing lots of equipment, or heading out yet again to another location. Instead, take your workout indoors and break it into short bursts of movement you can fit into your day. Think mini workout, not major production. Ten minutes is enough time to get your muscles working, elevate your heart rate a bit, and break up long periods of sitting. You can do it first thing in the morning, between household chores, during a television break, or whenever you find yourself with ten minutes to spare. And you don’t need much. A sturdy chair or countertop for support is helpful. A pair of light weights is optional - you can even use water bottles or canned food. Your own body provides plenty of resistance to get started. Never Exercised Before? Start Here. If you’ve never had a regular exercise routine, mini workouts can be a great place to begin. Ten minutes of simple, controlled movement is much less intimidating than trying to jump into a full-length workout. Start where you are, learn how your body responds, and gradually build from there. Mini workouts can also be useful on recovery days for those who already exercise regularly. If you’ve had a challenging strength workout or a particularly active day, you don’t always need to do more. A lighter routine can keep you moving without adding another demanding workout to your week.

Here are five simple exercises you can do at home: Think of these five exercises as the first tools in your mini-workout toolbox. You won’t use every tool every day, but the more tools you have, the more options you have for creating a workout that fits your needs, your energy, and your day. And this is just the beginning we’ll be adding more tools in Part 2!

1. March in Place Stand tall and slowly lift one knee at a time as though you’re walking without going anywhere. Keep your posture upright and use a countertop or chair for support if needed. Try: 30–60 seconds.

2. Sit-to-Stands Sit toward the front of a Sturdy chair with your feet about hip-width apart. Lean slightly forward and stand up, using your hands only if needed. Be sure to stand all the way up. Slowly lower yourself back to the chair. Try: 8–12 repetitions. 3. Calf Raises Stand tall behind a sturdy chair or at a countertop for support. Rise onto the balls of your feet, pause briefly, then slowly lower your heels back to the floor. Try: 10–15 repetitions.

The goal isn’t to make every workout hard. The goal is to keep your body moving while giving it what it needs that day. 4. Biceps Curl to Press With or without light weights, start with your arms at your sides. Curl your hands toward your shoulders, then press your arms overhead with your palms facing each other. Lower with control and repeat. Try: 8–12 repetitions.

Courtside Tips

. 5. One-Arm Row Place one hand on a sturdy chair or countertop (not shown) for support. Hinge slightly forward from your hips and let the opposite arm hang toward the floor. Pull your elbow back toward your ribs, then slowly lower your arm. Switch sides. Try: 8 -12 repetitions per side. Make Your Ten Minutes Count You can move through all five exercises once, resting as needed, and you’re done. If you have more time and feel good, repeat the circuit. Mini workouts aren’t meant to replace your regular strength-training sessions. Think of them as a way to add purposeful movement to your day, practice important movement patterns and keep your body active when the heat makes longer workouts less appealing. And don’t underestimate the value of these little bursts of movement. The goal isn’t to spend your entire day exercising. It’s to stop thinking that exercise only counts when you’re dressed for a workout and headed to the gym.

By Rod Dunnett, USPTA Elite Professional

The half volley is a crucial net shot hit right after the ball bounces low at your feet. Master it with compact technique to turn defense into offense. Key Technique Bend your knees deeply to stay low, keeping your racquet head below the ball’s bounce. Use a continental grip, minimal backswing, and punch forward through contact rather than scooping or slicing—aim low over the net with body momentum. Footwork Focus Split-step on arrival, then drive off your front foot (left for forehand, right for backhand if right-handed). Move toward the ball to let it roll onto the strings, finishing high on your target side for control. Practice Drill Stand at the service line; have a partner feed mediumpaced shots to your feet. Take the ball instantly postbounce (“ba-bomp” sound), repeating 20-30 reps per side. Gradually add directional targets. This builds confidence for doubles or serve-volley plays.

The best part? No gym bag, no driving, no sunscreen - and definitely no Arizona heat. Just ten minutes, a little space and a commitment to keep your body moving. This is just the beginning! Watch for Part 2, where we'll add more exercises to your mini-workout toolbox. Mix them with these exercises, substitute them, or create an entirely new ten-minute routine. By Part 3, you'll have enough options to build a mini workout that's right for you. Your Mini-Workout Toolbox Simple exercises. More options. Ten minutes at a time.

Two important things to be cautious About items in the fitness center: dropping dumbbells on the rubber floor can cause damage to the underlying concrete flooring as the current flooring is super thin. Also, dropping the weight stacks on the Life Fitness machines can cause damage to the pulley cables and ultimately the calibration of the machines. Did you know the official bird of Redondo Beach, California, is the Goodyear Blimp?
