The RCMP’s BC Highway Patrol is still investigating a serious crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV on Hwy. 17 in Tsawwassen, Saturday. Police are looking for more witnesses and dash-camera video to determine exactly what happened. According to BC Highway Patrol, on July 12, around 11:15 a.m., a black Harley Davidson motorcycle collided with a dark, green Toyota SUV on Hwy. 17 and Tsawwassen Drive. A second SUV, a grey Honda, was damaged by debris from the initial collision. “The minutes leading up to the collision, and the moments before the collision, are crucially important to the inves-

Michael McLaughlin. “If you were in the area and saw these vehicles, or have dash camera footage, you could really help police by sharing what you saw.” The motorcyclist, a 37-yearold man from Port Alberni, is expected to survive but may

have life-altering injuries. Nobody else was hurt and all drivers stayed on scene and have been cooperative with police. The highway was closed, with traffic to and from the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal impacted for hours. Delta police are urging

motorcyclists and drivers to be extra cautious after two other serious motorcycle collisions on the weekend. “These incidents serve as a stark reminder that motorcycle season is in full swing, and with that, comes an increased risk on our roadways,” said Staff Sgt. Mike Whiteley.

On Nordel Way, in North Delta, a motorcyclist riding in a group, lost control and struck a concrete divider. The motorcycle caught fire and was destroyed. Fortunately, the rider sustained only minor injuries. Early indicators suggest rider inexperience and speed may have been factors. On Admiral Boulevard, in Ladner, a single-vehicle crash occurred when a motorcyclist lost control and hit two parked cars. The rider was taken to hospital in critical condition. Investigators believe speed and potential impairment may have contributed to the incident. “We want to emphasize the importance of shared responsibility,” added Whiteley. “Motorcyclists must ride within their skill level, avoid speeding or riding impaired, and wear proper protective gear. “Drivers must also stay alert, double-check blind spots, and yield appropriately — especially when turning.”
