The numbersofFraser River sockeye this yearare huge,in themillions.
YetLadnercommercialfisher Paul Kershaw, will have only a minisculeshareofwhat could be anhistoric run.
Kershaw, who saidit’s been six years sincethe last commercial sockeye fishery onthe Fraser, islimited to only235 sockeye, froma runthat he says isnowpredicted to be 10million sockeye, and climbing.
“It’s basicallynothing,” Kershaw said Tuesday.
That works out to about $4,500,headded.
During previous large runs, each boat wouldtake about 3,000 sockeye, headded.
Kershaw saiddespitethe huge numbers, Fisheriesand Oceans Canada onlyallotted 45,000 sockeye fortheentire commercialfleet.
He saidthe governmentis managingthefisheryasifthefleet was largerthanitis.
He said Tuesdaymorningthat he hasn’t seen twootherfishing boatsontheFraser River.
“It’sthebiggest joke There’s
nobodyfishingandthey’ve got 10millionfish.. .”
He addedthat the governmentis managingitasifthe run size will be 2.7million sockeye.
Peoplecould be making good money,he said.
“There’s good food that could be onthetable, butinstead, in basically twomonthsit will all be rottenonthe river bank, up river somewhere,” said Kershaw.” We maynever see a sockeye runofthisextraordinary magnitude againin our
lifetime.”
Whilethe runoriginally was predicted at 2.7million sockeye, Kershaw says that number has already swam past Missionas of Aug. 13, withanother30 to 40 daysto go.
“It’s going to exceed any of theirexpectations. It’s only a matterofhow much.”
Kershaw has beenfishingfor 53 years.
It’s been six years sincethe last commercial sockeyefishery ontheFraser River.
“Theproblem is not nativefishing, whodo have apriority, it’s the exclusionofall other stakeholderswhose share can’t possibly be zero on a runofthis magnitude,” Kershaw says.
He adds Fisheries and Oceans Canada draggeditsfeetin July when record numbers of sockeye were showingup in the test fisheriesandnow hasno plan to manage such numbers.
According to the Pacific Salmon Foundation, asof July 29,734,400 sockeyealready had passed throughthelowerFraser River, ontheir1,200-kmtrip up to Fort St James.
That compares to last year whenonly26 early Stuart sockeye spawned becauseofthe Big Bar landslide.
Butthefoundationcitesthe Pacific Salmon Commission whichestimatesthat 65 percent ofthosecoulddie before spawning, because oflow water flows andhigh water temperatures.
However, thefoundation said
that this year’s early Stuart run is the largest since1997and representsproductivity similar to that fromthe1970s.
Reasonsfortheincrease couldincludecooler ocean temperaturesorthe removal offishfarms in theDiscovery Islands, onthe sockeye’s migration route.
The Pacific Salmon Foundationalso says this year’s totalFraser River sockeye run is stillonlyexpected at three million, belowthe averageofeight million.
It alsoaddsthat the temperature of theFraser Riveris 1.9 C warmerthan average.
But Kershaw says a newsletterfromthe Pacific Salmon Commission says that spawning sockeye are arriving northwest ofPrince George in overall good condition. “Ifthere was major mortalityproblem, it should have shown itself,” he said.
He saidthat permittingthe entire run to move upthe river to spawn, doesn’tmean record returnsinfour years.
“Allowing millions of surplus fish to the spawninggrounds doesnotlead to future good returns, It’s called over-spawning,”he said.

While Delta policeencourage speedy e-cyclists to be safe, local cyclingadvocate Neil Pope sayssignsand signals and road markings can be alow-cost way ofensuring rulesarefollowed.
One simple stepis to ensure bi-directional, multi-use pathsin Delta have yellowlinesdown themiddle, just so peopleknowthey have to stay ontheir sideofthe path.
“It willhelpdelineateit. It will decrease that risk andit’s almost no cost, just alittlebitof paint,” Pope said.
Delta Police Department recently responded to complaintsin Tsawwassen aboute-bikes speeding along streets.
“Everybody’strying to share the roadways, the sidewalks, the paths, thedike access. We’re trying to educate people sothat everybodythat’s outthere stays safe,” S/Sgt. Michael Whiteley said.
Ratherthantaking anenforcement approach, policeare reminding cyclists that they must followthe rulesof the road, includingobeying signs, signals andyielding to pedestrians.
Addingmore cycling lanes can get peopleoffthe sidewalks, said Pope, who’sonthe Deltalocalcommittee withHUB Cycling.
“You just can’tsharea sidewalk, even though we are, withe-scooters,e-bikes, some regularbikes…anold person, and maybea personinawheelchair.
“They’reallusingthat same little sidewalkandit’s not working.”
Pope says alle-vehicle ridersshould be onthe road, rather thanthe sidewalk, withtheoneexceptionof young children. He saidhe canunderstand small kidsonwheelson the sidewalk.
“You’ve gotnine-year-oldson e-scooters, unsupervised,”he said.
Ifthey were one-scooters,he can understandthemon the sidewalk, insteadofthe roadinthemiddleof a lanetrying to avoid vehicledoorsopening, adding that he’s notadvocatingfor cyclingon sidewalks.

“Nobody withabike or e-anything, should be on a sidewalk, whenthere’s a cycling lane,” he said. Ridingonthe sidewalkalso canlead to crashes with cars backing out ofdriveways, he added.
“Sotheyshould be inthe cycling lane, ifthereisone, becausethey’re farther away from the driveway, butthe issueis we don’t have cycling lanesin a lotoftheplaces.”
Cyclistsore-cyclists can’t rideon sidewalksunlessa sign orotherdeviceallows

HUB’s positionisthat micromobility vehicles be allowedin cycle lanes.
Pope added many people can’tafford cars so they’reusinge-vehiclesfor basic transportation.

Anew masterplanfor theEast Ladner park was quietly put back onthe agendafor the parksand recreationdepartment two years ago.
It wouldn’t be the first timethe20-hectare(50acre) park was eyed for majoradditions overthe years.
More than 20 years ago, the city madeadeal withthe Ex-Britannia RugbyAssociationfor the park whichincluded new fieldsand restoring the historic John Oliver Barn.
While somefield improvements wererealized, the rebuildingofthe barn was laterdeemed
notfeasibleonceit was dismantled.
In 2008, thecity announcedit was workingonan agreement withthe Vancouver Whitecaps, a $31millionplanthat included a clubhousefor national andprofessionalplayers, atrainingfacility and severalfields. Delta would payforthenecessary roadway improvements to the park.
Thecity wouldalso providea60-year-lease forthe Whitecapsfor a portionofthe park that would be used by the soccer club.
During theprovincialelection campaign in2009,thenpremier Gordon Campbell made a stopin South Delta pledging$17.5millionfor theproject.
Theproposal,however,
fell apartwhen Deltaand the soccer clubcould not comeup withan agreementonhow much communityusage would be given.
In 2011, theprovincial government’s reluctance to allow John Oliver Park to have anewentrance proved to be a giant stumblingblock for improvements to the site.
Delta at thetime had been workingonanother masterplan sincethe partnership withthe Whitecapsfellthrough. That year, boards highlightingaproposed newplan were displayed at civicfacilities The municipality had already acquired four smalleradjacent parcels to increase the park’s footprintandallowfor greater sportsfielddevelopment.

B.C. must defendtheprovince’s longstanding systemofprivate land ownershipand cannot allow fortheuncertainty left by anew B.C. Supreme Court rulingon aboriginal rights andtitle, says the attorney general.

Additionally, thiscouncil unanimously approved anOfficial Community Plan(OCP) thatanticipated development such as thisin our maincorridorareasandproximity to the towncentre.
On socialmedia, you wouldthink that the folks who sufferfrom acrophobia in ourcommunity would have embraced thisoffering.
But, ofcourse,that wasnot to be.
Again, parking, traffic anddistance fromthe towncentre (if you can believe that one), were the lament. What will satisfythecoalition of no in Tsawwassen?
Fromwhat Iunderstand, satisfaction willonly be achieved if some crucialcriteriaare met. Some, but not
allofthesecriteria include:thehousing choiceis varied, comesin buildings six storeysorless, contains large suite sizesintheplus-1,000 sq.ft. range, have at least two parking stalls per unit, at least one guest parking spot per unit, maintainsexistingcommunity “character”anddoesnotcontribute to increasedtrafficcongestion. Oh ..andthey must be “affordable”and close to publicopen spaceandcommunityamenities.
In other words, a lovely butimpossiblevision.
Thecoalitionofno claims to represent the majority of Delta, when that is simply notthe case They don’t even representthe majority of South Deltans.
“Housing Our Future”--the very mandateembodiedinthe OCP, will requirea mayorandcouncilmoreconcerned aboutdoingtheir jobs, rather thanlosingthem, election in 2026or not.

Deltafirefighter Dave Mason recentlycompetedintheninthBritish Firefighter Challenge that tookplacenorthof London,in July.
That eventdrew teams fromall overthe world andinvolvesfirefighters infull gearcompleting tasks similar to what they wouldfind at real-life emergencies.
Along withanother competitorfrom Ontario, the two were thefirst Canadians to compete in the event.
Withthat event wrappedup, Masonis now focusing onbringing the Canadian versionof thecompetition to Delta next year.

Themonthof August has beenhotfor everyone, and toohotfor many.
It’s hard to geta good night’s sleepinthehigh heat of summer, andit is easy for tempers to flare. Afriendof mine suggested that a good way to cooloffis to go to the grocery storeand stand inthefrozenfood aisle. Anyair-conditioned place willdowhen we need relief, and we have many tochoose fromin Delta.
My thoughts go towardsthosewhoare sufferingand cannot get relief.I refernotonly to the humanswho suffer, butalsothe rest ofthe inhabitantsof Delta:the animals, thetreesand plants, the baking and parched earth.
It is easy forus to forgetthat we arenotalone onthis beautiful, fragile earth– ourislandhome.
“God saw everything that God had madeand indeed,it was very good.”
Theheat anddrought awakenus to the truth that we areinterconnected, not just with humans, but withallofcreation. Theheat anddrought remindusthat what we do,as humans, affects everyoneand everything.
Thequestionforus, andthe challenge for usisthis–howdo we respond? Howdo we adjust ourlivesand actionsforthewholeness of ourplanetandthe bettermentof ourcommunity?

Academicenvironments have undergonequitea change overthe last several decades. Technologicaladvancements have changedthe way educators teach andhow studentslearn, butthere’salso beenanotableshiftinwhat studentsare learning.
Science, technology, engineering, and math(STEM) has becomea point ofemphasisin21stcentury classrooms, andfor good reason.
The valueof STEMisundeniable; however, studentsand parentsalso should recognizethe many ways a wellrounded educationthat includes math and science butalsothe humanitiesand social sciencesfacilitates strong academic performance.
Criticalthinkingskills
A well-rounded education caninstill importantandusefulcriticalthinking skillsin students. When studentsdirect the bulkoftheir attention to a single subjector category of subjects, they’re
lesslikely to understandhowinterconnected coursework, andindeed the world, can be.A well-rounded education caninstillin studentsamore nuanced wayoflooking at problemsand potential solutions. That ability can positively affect students’ personallivesandultimatelytheirprofessionalliveswhen theirformal schooling ends, asthey will be in position to betterassess situations.
Comprehension
Testsaredesigned to gauge students’ graspof material. Students’ ability to comprehendlessonstaughtinthe classroomisabig part ofthat, and a well-rounded educationfosters strong comprehension skills.
A well-rounded education pays severaldividendsfor students. Recognition ofthose benefitsmightcompel parents to supporta curriculum that includes a widearrayof subjectsandacademic disciplines.

Ihavebeen wearingdentures formany years and theyaretothe point that my gumsare extremelysoreand red: whatcan Ido?
Softtissuemanagement is theansweryou areseeking. Rehabilitationofsoft tissues is primary.First, your dentures require cleaning to remove offensiveorganismsthat may becontributingtothe inflammationand edema(swelling). Tissueconditioners (temporary soft liningmaterial)are placedon thetissuefitting surface of your dentures to provideacleanpositiveadaptation to yourgum tissues. Healingbegins and your tissuesarereassessed in aweek to confirmtheprogressof healing. Generallya secondand orthird tissueconditioner mayneed to be appliedbefore proceeding totheconstructionofnew dentures. New denturespromotea healthyclean fittingsurface formany years. If you haveanyquestions regarding this procedureorany other denturerelated subject, pleasebookyourfreeconsultationwith us.
