The gifting of architecture during the Cold War was a spectacular means for socialist countries to manifest a new vision of international relations for the decolonizing world. Soviet, Eastern European, Chinese, and Cuban institutions donated factories, schools, hospitals, and housing to newly independent states in Africa and Asia, transforming cities and landscapes in Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Mongolia, Vietnam, and elsewhere. Konrad Wachsmann’s Local Orientation Manipulator (LOM) was a visionary step toward the automation of architectural construction. Developed in 1969 with John Bollinger and Xavier Mendoza at the University of Southern California, the LOM was conceived as a mechanical system capable of positioning and orienting building components freely in space, enabling their precise assembly.

Following economic reform in 1978 and continuing until 1992, modern lay-built houses emerged in rural regions and villages of the People’s Republic of China. The one-to-fourstory structures were constructed from reused materials salvaged from disassembled traditional houses, with timber framing and masonry infill rearranged within a new concrete frame. Bas Princen, explores, through photography, explores the image itself, focusing on how photographs influence and define the ways in which space and landscape are perceived, represented, and reproduced. Sociologist Lucius Burckhardt and architect Walter Maria Förderer may seem an unlikely pair, yet their 1968 book Bauen ein Prozess reveals a shared vision: architecture as an ongoing political, and cultural negotiation. By shifting attention to the phases before construction and after completion, they challenge the idea of new buildings as “clean solutions” and highlight flexibility, conflict, and user agency. In ten concise chapters, they question preservation dogmas and argue for hybrid, adaptable architectures. Lucius Burckhardt, (1925–2003), Dr. phil., Basel, worked from 1955 as a research associate at the Social Research Center of the University of Münster in Dortmund. After a visiting lectureship at the Ulm School of Design in 1959, he held teaching appointments and later visiting professorships in sociology at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich from 1961 to 1973. At the same time, he served as editor-in-chief of the journal Werk from 1962 to 1972. From 1976 to 1983, Burckhardt was Chair of the Deutscher Werkbund. He is regarded as the founder of promenadology. He was a corresponding member of the German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning, a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, a member of the founding advisory board of the Saar College of Fine Arts (1987–1989), and Founding Dean of the Faculty of Design at Bauhaus University Weimar (1992–1994). His work was recognized with the Hessian Culture Prize (1994) for outstanding achievements in the fields of science, ecology and aesthetics, with the German Design Promotion Award (1995), and the Swiss Design Prize (2001). Lucius Burckhardt died in Basel in 2003. Annemarie Burckhardt, whom he married in 1955 and with whom he collaborated closely, died on July 15, 2012. Their joint work was featured at documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens in 2017.

Walter Maria Förderer (1928–2006) was a Swiss architect, sculptor, academic, and politician. His buildings include the Rosenberg Campus of the University of St. Gallen and the Church of St. Nicolas in Valais.

How can the transition to circular construction be organized at the territorial scale?

Focusing on the Eurodelta region, which spans parts of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, the book examines how cities, regions, and infrastructure systems can collaborate to support the circular transformation of the built environment. Based on the findings of the ASSET project, it demonstrates how spatial planning, policy, and infrastructure can reduce waste, reuse materials, and rethink urban development. Addressing both opportunities and limitations, the volume provides insights into real-world challenges such as housing demand, resource scarcity, and fragmented governance. Rather than offering one-sizefits-all solutions, it promotes practical, place-based approaches to circularity.
