Im Jahre 1897 unternahm Adolf Erman den Versuch, die meroitische Schriftsprache zu entziffern. Sein Versuch war nicht von Erfolg gekrönt, da er nicht erkannte, dass es sich um eine afrikanische Sprache handelte, die mit dem Ägyptischen nicht verwandt ist, obwohl Texte mit Hieroglyphen geschrieben sind. Das Buch präsentiert den heutigen Kenntnisstand dieser Sprache nach der erfolgreichen Entschlüsselung durch Francis Llewellyn Griffith 1909. Jochen Hallof, Dresden, Germany.

Das ‚lange 19. Jahrhundert‘ sah drei Gesamtübersetzungen der Schriften des Lukian aus Samosata: Wieland (1788/89), Pauly (1827–1832) und Fischer (1886/87). Die Neuübersetzung, nach Werkgruppen gegliedert, bezieht ihre Berechtigung aus Wielands Feststellung, große Texte müssten alle 30 bis 40 Jahre neu übersetzt werden, um den Veränderungen der Sprache Rechnung zu tragen. In seinem Steinbuch beschreibt Marbod von Rennes die medizinischen und magischen Wirkkräfte von sechzig Heil- und Zaubersteinen. Das um 1100 entstandene Lehrgedicht war das meistgelesene mineralogische Kompendium des Mittelalters und wurde vielfach abgeschrieben und nachgedichtet. Der Band bietet erstmals eine vollständige lateinisch-deutsche Ausgabe und erschließt Autor, Werk und Gattung in ausführlichen Erläuterungen. Zusammen mit Aristoteles arbeitete Theophrast von Eresos (ca. 371–287 v. Chr.) an einem umfassenden Programm der Wissenschaften. Während sich jener vornehmlich der Zoologie widmete, befasste sich Theophrast mit der Botanik, als deren Begründer er gilt. Die neun Bücher umfassende Pflanzenkunde ist ein Grundtext der Biologie, der hier in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe mit allgemeinverständlichen Anmerkungen erschlossen wird. This book examines the experience of time when learning to write in Mesopotamia. The basis for this study is Syllable Alphabet B, a simple cuneiform sign list that was copied as an elementary exercise by Mesopotamian scribal pupils beginning to learn to write. It is also the first publication and analysis of a list that is foundational for studying the acquisition of literacy in the ancient world.

Do tomb decorations reflect seasonal awareness or do they present idealised scenes? This study examines avian iconography in Old and Middle Kingdom tomb decorations of ancient Egypt depicting natural environments and subsistence activities. By investigating whether portrayed bird species could have seasonally coexisted and comparing these with human activities, it evaluates how accurately natural temporality was represented in funerary contexts.
