Court Case Updates Carroll County
Jefferson County, WV
Impoundment was on appeal. Hearing results in favor of one owner (Xcellent Xander returned) and in favor of Carroll County for remaining 7 horses. Criminal charges pending. (Ultimate Udo, Valiant Victor, Wise Willow, Xcellent Xander, Yellow Yuzu, Zesty Zelda, Aries Astro Angel, Bing Bang Boomer)
Charges pressed. Trial set for end of January. (Glitzy Gemma, Hometown Halsey, Idle Isla, Knightly Knox, Loyal Lance, Jesting Jax)
Cabell County
Owner plead guilty to 2 charges. (Earnest & Frankfurt)
Trial in West Virginia on appeal. Awaiting date to be set in Circuit Court. (Winnifred, Xackery, Yara, Zafrina, Auntie Ann, Billy Bob, Colton's Creed)

Mini Mickjagger “Mick” Meet Mini Mickjagger, DEFHR’s newest ambassador! Mini MickJagger came to DEFHR earlier this year as a neglect case, but rehabbed at DEFHR’s second location. Did you know that Mickjagger is the smallest equine to ever come to DEFHR? At only 26 ½ inches tall, he is VERY petite, but as do most minis, Mickjagger has a BIG personality that definitely outnumbers his size! Mickjagger is currently in training, getting used to daily handling and starting some groundwork training. So far, he loves coming out of his paddock and spending time with people. When you get to interact with Mickjagger, he appreciates it if you occasionally get down to his level, so he does not always have to tilt his head up high to see who you are! He was recently introduced to the main miniature herd (Winnifred, Dorito, and Olivia) and is making friends already! Make sure you say hello to him the next time you are at the farm!

How long have you volunteered with DEFHR? I have been volunteering for a little over two years.

Do you have a favorite DEFHR herd member, past or present? If so, who? No, I don't have a favorite member because I believe everyone at the farm serves a great purpose.
How did you initially find out about us? I was riding my bike one day and saw the horses from the road, the following week I stopped by the office and picked up some information pamphlets, went home and registered for the training and three weeks later I started my journey.
What's your favorite part of volunteering with DEFHR? My favorite part of volunteering is knowing that we are making this world a better place to live one horse at a time.
Did you have any previous equine experience(s) before volunteering with DEFHR? What was it? No, I didn't have previous equine experience.

Education Tour Leaders Visitors love to learn about what we do and see it in action when they come to DEFHR. If you have a good foundation of knowledge about what we do or want to learn more, we'd love your help with 1-hour Education Tours that we host as scheduled here at Main Farm. Event Volunteers Do you enjoy connecting with people? DEFHR frequently invites others to the farm through on-site events like Scout Days, Field Trips, etc. in order to educate about our mission throughout our community. We always need help to call on to man these events! If you are interested, we would love to talk with you further about becoming a part of the Event Volunteer team! Check out page ____ on what we need help with at Santa’s Village on Saturday, December 9th, 2023! Page 11
Volunteer Group Leaders We need help with making sure volunteer groups have a fun, educational and safe time when they visit our farm to help out. Email Mattie at volunteer@defhr.org if you can help!
"FOT" Volunteers As a working farm, there's always something breaking or needing the attention of a fixing hand! Even if you're inexperienced but want to learn more about what it takes to be a "handy (wo)man," consider joining our Facilities Operations Team "FOT"! Overview With the help of our volunteers, DEFHR was able to save more than 50 horses in 2023 (Jan 1 - December 31).
Horses
We started the year with a herd size of 73, and ended the year with a herd size of 75, only 2 additional horses! Our organization facilitated the adoption of 50 horses in 2023! Having saved 55 horses total for the 2023 year, we were almost 1:1 on intakes to adoptions!

Volunteers
It’s amazing how many hours were logged by such a small but dedicated force of volunteers. Combined, over 600 volunteers gave a year total of 30,788 hours towards our cause!! Based on the national calculated hourly value of volunteers 1 in the United States, $31.80/hour, those 30,000+ hours of volunteering equates to OVER 1 MILLION DOLLARS given to DEFHR in 2023!
We’re amazed and ever grateful for the dedication and impact our volunteers have on our mission of ensuring quality care and treatment of horses, helping us in every aspect of our mission from intervention to education, and even helping with outreach. We hope that these numbers continue to grow with your help in 2024! Thank you for all your impact in 2023, and here’s to more lives being saved!
