An update on Cool Chex
HORSE SPOTLIGHT
Our dear Chex had surgery in late July to remove a squamous cell carcinoma from his left eye. We are very fortunate to have the services of Dr. Nunnery, a boardcertified equine ophthalmologist, whose goal was to remove all of the tumor without having to remove Chex’s eye. The surgery was a success; Dr. Nunnery installed a ‘subpalpebral lavage system’ – a fancy name for a silicone catheter that was placed in Chex’s lower eyelid, enabling us to dispense five types of medications, four times a day and night, to prevent infection, keep the pupil functioning, and keep the eye clean. Staff and interns have worked twelvehour days, alternate shifts, and evening hours to accommodate the 8 am, 12 pm, 4 pm, and 8 pm schedule. Chex’s pain has been managed with various medications and dosages, and he’s been on antibiotics for an unexpected infection of his jugular vein (thrombosis). He's received close monitoring by our veterinarians at Monocacy Equine, along with Dr. Nunnery, through exams every two weeks, and more frequently by calls and texts.
Cool Chex Chex steals the hearts of everyone he meets!
We have made it through the initial, more intense aspects of Chex’s recovery, and his eye is slowly healing. Truthfully, this process has taken longer than even Dr. Nunnery anticipated. Through it all, though, Chex has remained his kind, engaging, patient, and lovely self. He continues to love meeting new people and greeting his staff friends. Each week we are seeing improvement in his eye’s healing. We are asked often if Chex will be able to see out of his eye when this is all done. Dr. Nunnery believes he may be able to see shadows, light, and blurry images, which is more than he could see when the tumor was present. It's been a tremendous labor of love to get Chex to this point. We are grateful for every improvement and will continue to take it one day at a time. He continues to remind us why we do what we do.
