EXPERIENCE & CONNECTION Nature is a constant presence in our lives and the cornerstone of wellbeing. Spending time outside in nature offers us an opportunity to connect with each other and the wider world. With the changing seasons our time outside can be cut short, curtailed to only daylight hours. There are a lucky few of us who have not experienced the dark winter commutes and the effect it can have on our physical and mental health. Artificial light offers an opportunity to extend the available time within a space, providing a safe and welcoming oasis of revitalisation and community togetherness that would otherwise be lost or forced inside. These opportunities for longer use of spaces provide not just the place but also allow individuality to shine through the visual language employed within the landscape. The initial lighting for wayfinding and guidance opens doors to art, connection, play and lived experience for all people in all walks of life.

Sensitive and Innovative Design We design lighting installations that work in harmony with people and nature, protecting the natural world and opening up spaces to everyone. Like this beach resort with a resident sea turtle population. With their nesting grounds present within the site, we designed a groundbreaking control and colour system that works to protect the turtles whilst maintaining a safe place for people. 6

Invested in Detail We take the time to consider the nuanced elements of a project, right down to wayfinding and palettes of light fittings that complement each other and the location. Where 3D mock-ups or renders are available, we regularly incorporate these into visualisations to help show our intentions for the space and to promote discussion with the wider design teams and clients.

The Process Building a landscape lighting design involves an understanding of light, people and the wider environment as a foundation for creating an experience within a space. DESIGN LANGUAGE The identity of the space is carved out through careful selection of ideal shapes, forms, materials and colour palettes.

CALCULATIONS AND PLANS Once a direction is decided, we can build calculations that provide the right level of light, at the right time ,in the right place while creating a beautiful and unique space. 10

Modelling Calculation models offer opportunities to visualise how light works in specific scenarios and to test strategies for design or mitigation. The models below show a set of options for lighting the structure. Various techniques are used, which highlight different parts of the shape and create visually stunning textures. The realistic model (left) also shows how colour temperature can change the feel of a space as a result of tiny changes in the quantity of blue or red wavelengths in the light spectrum.

Invested in Detail Landscape lighting is a critical yet often underestimated component of a city’s infrastructure. It operates at the intersection of engineering, urban design, and human experience, supporting not only visibility and safety, but also identity, usability, and environmental performance within dense urban environments. Parks, pathways, plazas, and transitional spaces between buildings require clear, consistent illumination so people can navigate confidently after dark. Well-designed lighting reduces accidents by revealing changes in level, edges, and obstacles, while also discouraging antisocial behavior by increasing visibility. Beyond safety, landscape lighting extends the functional life of urban spaces. Cities do not shut down at sunset, public life increasingly continues into the evening. Thoughtful illumination allows parks and outdoor areas to remain active, supporting recreation, social interaction, and local economies. A well-lit square or riverside walk becomes an asset rather than a void after dark, contributing to the overall vibrancy and inclusivity of the city. Equally important is the environmental dimension. Poorly designed lighting contributes to light pollution, energy waste, and ecological disruption. Directional fixtures, appropriate brightness levels, and timed or sensor-based systems help minimize unnecessary spill light, protecting nocturnal wildlife and restoring a degree of balance to the urban night.

Roof Terraces Roof terrace lighting in a city environment sits at the intersection of atmosphere, usability, and safety. Done well, it transforms an exposed, often overlooked space into a functional extension of indoor living, responding to the rhythms of urban living. When thoughtfully designed, lighting turns a rooftop into a space that feels both connected to and removed from the city below.

From Day to Night As day transitions to darkness, so too does the way our eyes sense light in our environment. During the day, vision operates primarily in photopic conditions, where the eye is highly responsive to brightness, colour, and detail. At night, vision shifts toward scotopic conditions, where the eye becomes more sensitive to contrast, movement, and shorter blue wavelengths, while colour perception reduces. Between these two states lies mesopic vision, the transitional condition experienced during dusk, dawn, and many artificially lit outdoor environments. These shifts in perception mean exterior lighting should respond to human adaptation rather than simply replicating daytime brightness levels. Lighting controls play an essential role in managing changing exterior conditions throughout the evening, night, and across different seasons. Systems such as dimming, programmable scenes, occupancy sensing, and daylight-responsive controls allow lighting to gradually adapt as natural light levels change, supporting smoother visual transitions and reducing unnecessary energy use. It is also common for exterior lighting schemes to include a range of tailored lighting scenes for different ambient light conditions, times of day, activities, or occupancy levels. These scenes can be carefully adjusted to provide appropriate brightness, atmosphere, and wayfinding while avoiding excessive illumination and maintaining a more balanced night-time environment.
