A big thank you to Vito's Italian Restaurant for providing the perfect space for our cover photoshoot.

The Food & Wine Issue

Hello! It's that time of year for blessings and two of life’s many blessings are food and wine. Our November issue featured partner The Coastal Home Group has a special treat for our readers with their favorite local Italian restaurants. These ladies are foodies who love discovering new restaurants and sharing their finds with friends and clients. They believe that food is a powerful way to connect and they can often be found exploring the local food scene, taking photos, and making suggestions about the best places to dine in our community. Enjoy our Go-To Guide to New Restaurants in northern St. Johns, and we are excited to say there are quite a few! The Coastal Home Group’s Favorite Pizza Places will help you find the perfect slice or pie in town. My Wandering Fork has a few fun reviews in this special issue, including Valley Smoke and Nineteen at TPC Sawgrass. Congratulations to The Cycle Bar on their Grand Opening this month! As always, St. Johns Magazine is committed to connecting the growing communities of northern St. Johns by celebrating the people, places, and events that make it an amazing place to live! Please let our partners know you found them here! Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Each woman brings empathy, respect, and compassion to the table as well as the crucial ability to multi-task.

Group ladies absolutely LOVE their Italian meals together. They also love supporting and promoting local businesses, and dining at favorite restaurants while holding business meetings, or simply celebrating after a successful closing or two. Eleven years ago, Nikki Holm dabbled in culinary management, as her dream was to open an Italian wine bistro one day. Luckily for St. Johns families looking for the perfect home, she left the kitchen and pursued real estate.

In this year’s Food and Wine issue, The Coastal Home Group focused on their favorite Italian restaurants & pizza joints in St. Johns and the surrounding area. All the girls love discovering new restaurants and sharing their findings with the community. They believe that food is a powerful way to connect and can often be found exploring the local food scene, taking photos, and making suggestions about the best places to dine in and around Saint

As the leader of this all-female team, The Coastal Home Group, Nikki surrounds herself with a collaborative group of realtors who are focused on delivering high-level client satisfaction. Each woman brings empathy, respect, and compassion to the table as well as the crucial ability to multi-task. The result is a heart-centered and dynamic team clients love

Top 5 Best Italian Restaurants

NIKKI-LYN HOLM Jenn

Sherri

Favorite: Vito's Italian Restaurant Nikki: Hand’s down, it’s Vito’s Italian Restaurant in Fruit Cove. This spot is the go-to celebration place for her family. One of the reasons this authentic, organic, and delicious food resonates with her, is both the owner and her grandfather are Sicilian. The sauce is very nostalgic to that which she grew up eating. Nikki’s Go-To Dishes are Vito’s salad, Chicken Ala Rosa, or Filet Mignon with a merlot sauce on the side, and fettuccini. (Not exactly how it comes, but that’s how Nikki orders….her way) Why We Love Vito's? “The piano bar offers a more casual and lighthearted place to dine. The owner Giulio is the most caring, fun, consistent, and personable chef in town. He always walks around and checks on his patrons. Consistently ranked as the BEST Italian restaurant in the area, year after year. Giulio says he makes “friends” not customers…. Friends are for life!” Nikki-Lyn

JENN BOLOGNESE

Tara

Favorite: Catullo's Italian Catullo's Italian restaurant in Nocatee is one of my favorite places to dine. I love the fresh-from-scratch ingredients, family recipes, and the clean, yet modern aesthetic of the interior. The wait staff and service are always exceptional, and the food...well the food speaks for itself. The Tortellacci di Ricotta e Spinaci - incredible. I promise you, your meal is worth the wait. (Nikki’s fave here: Pear Gnocchi) Originally from Rhode Island, Jenn’s journey in real estate began over 10 years ago as a licensed agent, however, her true calling lies in the intricate world of operations where she showcases organizational skills and a passion for optimizing processes. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jennifer is a dedicated wife and mother, with a beautiful family of six children, and one grandchild.

Jenna

SHERRI FAY Favorite: Enza’s Italian Restaurant Enza’s is Sherri Fay’s go-to Italian Restaurant. The food is authentic, fresh, and delicious! Her go-to meal for starters is the handmade meatball for the table. It is served with dollops of ricotta and marinara sauce. For the main course, it will almost always be the Chicken Marsala. This dish is made with the best marsala wine and mushrooms. It always leaves her entirely too full

but she cannot leave without having the homemade Cannoli! Some of the Fay Family favorites are Chicken Parmigiana, Fettuccine Alfredo, Baked Ziti, and Lasagna. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. If you haven't tried Enza’s, she strongly recommends you do and make a reservation. She hopes you enjoy it as much as they do! Sherri was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. When she was 19 she moved to Virginia Beach where she lived until she moved to Saint Johns County in 2017. She is a mom of 5, with three in college and two in high school. She has been a Realtor for 7 years and started her love for the industry in property management. It brings her great joy serving the community, providing expert advice in real estate, getting to know families on a personal level, and making lifelong connections.

TARA MASTERS Favorite: Al Dente's Ristorante Italiano Tara enjoys the small, family owned atmosphere at Al Dente’s. It is a favorite dining spot during her work week. Whether you are going for happy hour, appetizers, or a full pasta dish, there is something for everyone. Seafood is normally not on the top of her list to order at an Italian restaurant, but at Al Dente’s… they do it right! The garlic shrimp is one of her favorite appetizers. What she really craves though is the Penne Al Vodka with Shrimp. She will even smother the sauce over steamed broccoli. It’s so good she could drink it with a straw! Mangiamo! Tara has been in the Saint Johns area for the past 24 years. She moved here from Ormond Beach to attend The University of North Florida. She has always had a heart to help and serve people. Building relationships and having good communication is of utmost importance to her. She also helps her husband run Masters Finishings, a painting and custom trim carpentry company. She does all of this while raising five kids and spending time with her grandson any chance she gets.

JENNA BARLEY Favorite: Pizza Time Jenna was born in Connecticut and raised in Pennsylvania. She met her college sweetheart at Penn State University. 5 years ago, her family decided to move to Florida. They have been enjoying the Florida sun more than imagined! The Barley’s have two fun-loving boys and just celebrated their 17-year anniversary. In addition to her wonderful family, Jenna loves carbs! Whenever she goes to downtown Saint Augustine, Pizza time is one of her favorite stops! The giant New York style slices of deliciousness and the garlic knots are beyond amazing! Anytime her family and friends visit from out of town, Pizza time is always a huge hit!

That's right the new updated and sought-after experience is open to the public. NINETEEN TPC Sawgrass has rejuvenated the country club dining experience with not only their fresh al fresco dining with panoramic views of the 18th hole but with their new drink and dining menus that are so great that I am sure that they will have you wanting to come back for more! You will find at this luxurious establishment that the most defining characteristic of Nineteen is its back-to-basics simplicity which lets you enjoy the high quality of the food, highly trained friendly staff, and top-notch but relaxed experience! First of all, for fun, you gotta have a pretzel. The presentation is amazing! It's a giant pretzel propped up on two golf clubs with golf tees on a TPC Sawgrass branded base. Not only is it a fun showstopper, but it tasted wonderful too. Warm with great texture and gooey cheese dipping sauce. Wash it down with the Sundance Kid - Datil pepper infused Maestro Dobel Reposado Tequila, pineapple (anyone who knows me knows I love a pineapple back with tequila), red pepper, Cilantro and Lime! Meanwhile enjoying a warm afternoon on the Veranda..does it get any better??

Did someone say a $100 egg?? What in the world is a $100 egg? Let me share with you. This is probably one of the most decadent, exquisite mouthfuls of food you can imagine. The chef takes 30g of Osetra Caviar (some of the best!) puts it on top of the creamiest deviled egg, a little smoked salmon, and savory grit cake all served with the classiest champagne, Moet Imperial bubbles! Cheers to me! I know, I know it is not something you would order every day (or maybe you would?) but why not splurge once in a while? special occasion or not?! I can promise you this though, you won't find this kind of decadence anywhere else around these parts.

Just to stay in this lane a little longer, steak tartare is not something you see on too many menus around here either, but NINETEEN TPC Sawgrass makes theirs with the finest meats, cured and tossed with egg yolk then topped with crispy potato skins that add that little bit of touch of salt. Each bite melts in your mouth. I could eat a bowl full! Something else you may find interesting on their menu is called Hen of the Woods Mushroom. It is this large flutterly-looking cooked mushroom served over an onion cream sauce and crispy chicken skin. Talk about unusual (and no this is not extreme cuisine or bizarre foods) but If you love mushrooms like me, definitely give it a try. Seafood is one of their specialties and they take pride in outsourcing locally and daily to get the freshest there is. I loved the chilled shellfish platter. Sumptuous large shrimp and oysters served with a tangy kumquat mignonette and fresh creamy crab salad. For fish choices, one of my favs is the Phyllocrusted flounder. Delicate white fish mild in flavor, subtly sweet covered in a thin phyllo crust, and baked to perfection. Paired with a Pinot Blanc simply delightful. And if you love pork they have this amazing southern-inspired pork tenderloin, so juicy, served with sweet corn pudding, braised greens, and smoked apple chutney with a little bit of upscale barbeque vibe to it all. So good! So I was one of the lucky ones to participate in what I like to call "a true dining extravaganza" otherwise known as the Salt Baked Prime Rib! The display alone appeared to be a mile long...just kidding but it was huge. I'm talking 7 tomahawks big. That's right a 7 rib (tomahawk) encrusted in a thick salt “housing”. within which the steak can roast. The salt keeps all of the moisture in while also permeating the outside of the meat. The salt makes the meat tender and juicy by softening the protein, keeping the meat from drying out, and seasoning the meat all the way through. Trust me when I say I have had my share of some pretty awesome steaks but this definitely took the cake!I was in total awe of the process and even more in awe of the flavor. Incomparable to anything I have ever tasted. Leave it to Nineteen TPC Sawgrass to bring in the big guns and with such finesse and excellence. So come on by to one of the most famous golf courses in the country and live like the Masters do. Try a nice lunch or enjoy a beautiful sunset at one of the most hippest happy hours or enjoy an extraordinary meal made with only the freshest farm-to-table ingredients served in a warm elegant setting along with some of the most sought-after wines you have ever tasted. Treat yourself and your friends to an amazing brunch with bottomless mimosas or if you are planning a special family meal go all out and order one of their feasts! Choose a suckling pig roast, Low Country boil, Cedar plank Salmon, or the one and only SALT-BAKED Prime Rib! OmG!

Dining in the Valley: Part 3

Palm Valley Fact #3: Prohibition turned some of the valley residents to another source of income – moonshine. The abundant water supply and deep woods areas in the valley were ideal for the concealment of illegal whiskey distilling. The moonshine industry thrived even after the Volstead Act was repealed in 1933, but the rising price of sugar finally brought the illegal whiskey industry to an end. The forest also provided a place to make moonshine. “Palm Valley Shine” was the best that this area had to offer. Some say it was the water. Some say it was the isolation of the swamp that gave shiners time to make their product special. Whatever the reason, it was prized up and down the coast. Some say they still make moonshine in Palm Valley today!

Valley Smoke BBQ Highlights Tucked away in the the valley folds along the river you will find an upscale BBQ that also believes in creating only the best. Valley Smoke BBQ has kept up with the tradition of procuring some of the finest Bourbons and Whiskeys to offer in “the Valley”. The vibrant bar and beautifully decorated Bourbon Library offer a rare selection of these libations. Anyone who knows me knows I love a good Old fashioned and here they have one of the best! Made with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Luxardo cherries, Bittermilk No. 1, and fresh orange. So so smooth....

Obviously, their smoked meats are top-of-the-line. The 3 and 4 choice platters can easily feed 2 if you are willing to share. And they have some very inventive delicious entrees and appetizers. But have you ever tried their Burrata?? It's not a common thing even more so at a BBQ establishment. (Just FYI: burrata's exterior resembles fresh mozzarella, but break into it with a fork, and you'll find a surprise inside: an ooey, gooey mixture of cream and small cheese curds.) Well...Valley Smoke BBQ has stepped this up a notch, alrighty! They have created an Oak Smoked Burrata served over peppery arugula and tangy tomato peach compote drizzled in basil and olive oil. Smear this over a toasty grilled baguette you got yourself a little bit of Italy mixed in with the good ol’ South. So amazing! Enjoy!

PARTNERING

WITH A PURPOSE: First Coast YMCA Collaborates with Third Party Plans To Offer Healthy Living Programs

She lives alone so having staff and resources available at the Y has made a significant impact on her healthy living progress and given her a community of supporters to help her along the way. Peggy’s diagnosis is not unusual here in St. Johns County. According to a recent community health assessment, St. Johns County ranked above the state average in adults with arthritis, cancer, and high blood pressure. These chronic diseases impact seniors especially hard and we want to make sure we’re providing adequate resources to our older members so they don’t have to go through these challenges alone. Programs like Blood Pressure Self Monitoring, Diabetes Prevention, and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA are valuable resources for members to face chronic diseases headon and they all include a group of people who are committed to helping you. A Message From The Vet by Dr. Deckard, DVM, Pets R Family

New Pain INjection for Arthritis in Dogs The truth is that animals age much faster than we do, which means that age related problems that humans encounter are seen much earlier in our pets’ lives. One of the most debilitating progressive painful conditions that they deal with is osteoarthritis pain (OA). There have been some advances over the years to help dogs with pain such as cold laser treatments, Adequan injections, a variety of joint supplements, omega 3 fatty acids, mobility prescription diets, anti-inflammatory medications, and platelet rich plasma injections, just to name a few. These can really help our canine friends move better and can manage their pain for some time, however, these can only help to a certain extent. Dogs suffering from chronic pain become sedentary and overweight, which further leads to joint deterioration. This pain may cause them to stop eating or even become irritable.

Clinical signs of osteoarthritis pain can include: • Abnormalities of movement/lameness • Musculoskeletal deterioration • Anxiety • Loss of vitality, energy, and enthusiasm • Sleep impairment • Cognitive dysfunction These signs can dramatically affect a pet’s quality of life which can lead pet parents to decide to keep them from suffering after exhausting all the available options.

The amazing news is that we now have another option to help dogs with chronic osteoarthritis pain. This new drug, called Librela, has been used in Europe since 2021, and was just approved by the FDA here in the US. It is a monthly injection, given by your veterinarian, that blocks nerve growth factor (NGF) using a newer technology called monoclonal antibodies. These antibodies function like naturally occurring antibodies that are easy on your dog's liver and kidneys. NGF is one of the primary mediators that creates inflammation and pain. Librela binds to NGF and blocks this pain pathway. Librela can be given as an adjunct to other current treatments for chronic OA pain. In many cases, you will no longer need to give other pain medications. It is not labeled to be effective for acute pain and is not a substitute for surgery, if indicated. It is recommended to give 3 monthly injections to determine the full benefit of the product, but you may see results in as soon as 7 days. Because it’s just blocking the pain pathway, you must continue the injection monthly indefinitely to be effective long term. The feline version called Solensia has been available in the US for just over a year and has been used with great success. OA in cats is far less recognized by pet owners since they are much better at hiding their pain. We are all very excited about this new breakthrough in veterinary medicine and look forward to helping many patients get one step closer to improved mobility and comfort. Ask your veterinarian if Librela or Solensia are right for your pet today.
