Our unique composer showcase of original music from this season’s most celebrated TV shows

Welcome back to another edition of Deadline’s Sound & Screen showcase event, where we bring into focus one of the most vital and yet often unseen elements of storytelling: music. From sweeping, orchestral themes to more intimate, character-driven pieces, a project’s score and songs are integral parts of the puzzle when it comes to shaping how audiences connect with what they see on screen.

Sound & Screen has quickly become one of Deadline’s most popular events and we’re delighted to be returning to Royce Hall for another fantastic lineup of talented musicians and their scores for this year’s most striking television offerings.

This year’s roster is an excellent one. We’ve got Jeff Russo, a founder of Tonic and previous member of Low Stars, who is the composer behind FX’s Alien: Earth as well as Emmy-winning composer and musician Amanda Jones, who is behind the sound of Apple TV’s Murderbot. Siddhartha Khosla will also join us on stage to showcase his score for Imperfect Women, starring Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington and Kate Mara.

Renowned composer Jeff Beal, whose credits include House of Cards and The Newsroom, is also in the building, where he’ll walk us through the process of writing the music for Peacock’s hit series All Her Fault starring Sarah Snook and Dakota Fanning. Meanwhile, Christopher Lennertz and Matt Bowen are returning this year to talk about their approach to composing the score for Prime Video’s wild superhero series The Boys, while Tyler Strickland will walk us through the emotional journey of scoring John Candy: I Like Me, which explores the life and legacy of the iconic Canadian funnyman.

Breton Vivian, who earned an Emmy-nomination for his prominent work on Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, is also returning to the Royce Hall this year to talk composing Paramount+ series The Madison. HBO Max series The Pitt is coming off the back of winning

the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series and Gavin Brivik and Andrew Bird will be here to breakdown making the show’s Original Song “Need Someone”.

Netflix is in the house with two shows: Beef and Wednesday Finneas O’Connell, who has already won two Oscars, two Golden Globes and 11 Grammys, is the mastermind behind the score for the much anticipated second season of Beef and he’ll outline his approach for us today. Meanwhile, two-time Emmy nominee Chris Bacon, whose credits include Source Code, Heretic and Alpha and Omega, will talk how he’s built on the show’s gothic score for the latest season of Wednesday

And last, but certainly not least, David Archuleta, Sophie Rose and Michael Blum, are here to talk about their original song “Wish That You Were Me” for Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

Chris Bacon is a Grammy and four-time Emmy–nominated composer known for blending orchestral scale with modern, kinetic energy. He first broke through with his propulsive score for Source Code and has since built a body of work that moves seamlessly between psychological thrillers, large-scale studio films, and character-driven television. He has received Emmy nominations for his scores to Wednesday, Bates Motel and Smash, along with a nomination for

his main title theme for The Tick. His recent work includes Season 2 of Wednesday and

the action thriller M3GAN 2.0. His film credits include Heretic, 65, Men in Black: International, Sherlock Gnomes, Being Charlie, Snatched and Gnomeo & Juliet

He has collaborated with notable directors including Tim Burton, Barry Sonnenfeld and Rob Reiner, as well as Gerard Johnstone, Duncan Jones and the filmmaking team of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. Bacon began his career working closely with James Newton Howard, an experience that taught him what it truly means to be an artist and a professional. He has since worked alongside iconic composers including Danny Elfman, Alan Menken and Harry Gregson-Williams, while developing his own voice across film, television, global ad campaigns and theme park attractions.

A, Frank Marshall’s Rather and dramatic scores for HBO’s Rome, Carnivàle, The Newsroom, USA’s Monk, Netflix’s House of Cards, and Apple TV’s Raymond & Ray have shown him to be one of the most distinctive and recognizable composers working today.

In addition to his distinguished scoring career, Beal is a prolific composer of concert music. His latest recording, New York Études, is a collection of solo piano works, and has already had 3 million streams on Apple Classical.

Beal continues a flourishing career while battling health issues, as he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2006, and these compositions focus on the connection of music-making, wellness and mindfulness. Recent works include: “The Paper Lined Shack” for Leonard Slatkin, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and soprano Hila Plitmann; “Sunrise” for The Los Angeles Master Chorale; a flute concerto for Sharon Bezaly/

Andrew Bird

The Pitt

Andrew Bird is an internationally acclaimed, Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, whistler and songwriter who picked up his first violin at age four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. Since beginning his recording career in 1997, Bird has released 18 studio albums and performed extensively worldwide.

He has been a featured TED Talks presenter, a New Yorker Festival guest, and an op-ed contributor for The New York Times. He has headlined

concerts at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, Disney Hall, Red Rocks and festivals worldwide. Bird’s music has soundtracked hit shows from Orange is the New Black and The Bear to Ted Lasso and Mare of Easttown, and films including Crazy, Stupid, Love and Outside In. He performed as the Whistling Caruso in Disney’s The Muppets and composed the score for the FX series Baskets. Michael Blum is a songwriter and music producer whose work spans pop, screen and musical theater. His career began in pit bands at Dartmouth College, and since then, his songs have appeared everywhere from Billboard charts to feature films and acclaimed television series, amassing hundreds of millions of streams worldwide. Blum has produced and co-written songs with artists including

David Archuleta, oskar med k (“i think i’m addicted”, which spent eight-plus weeks on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and Spotify’s Viral 50 USA), Haley Joelle, Caleb Hearn, Maddie Zahm, Lily Meola, The Reklaws, Girl Named Tom, Abigail Barlow, and yaeow.

A jazz guitarist by training, Blum was named Down Beat Magazine’s Rising Star Guitarist in its Critics Poll and is the inaugural recipient of ASCAP’s Peggy Lee Songwriter Award. He is currently developing an original musical that blends pop and musical theater through a sci-fi lens.

Matt Bowen

The Boys

As a classically trained violinist, a veteran of rock stages and recording studios, and now an LA–based composer for film and television, Matt Bowen builds scores that are raw, rich, and unmistakably handmade. Most recently, he co-scored Prime Video’s dark superhero juggernaut The Boys, as well as its critically-acclaimed spinoff Gen V, alongside Christopher Lennertz. Contrasting the twisted world of The Boys are Bowen’s eccentric scores to Hulu’s gloriously R-rated comedies The Binge, its sequel It’s a Wonderful

Binge and Summer of 69

Some of Bowen’s other varied score credits include his work on the gritty Emmy Awardwinning documentary Blood Road, the raucous Netflix TV series Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever., and episodes of the animated anthology series The Boys Presents: Diabolical.

As a multi-instrumentalist, high school and college bands immersed him in punk, electronica and acoustic rock, he went into recording studios as a band member and came out obsessed with what happens on the other side of the glass. That obsession led him to LA, where he linked

up with record producer Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More) and engineered a string of major-label albums, earning multiple RIAA-certified platinum singles along the way.

Gavin Brivik

Named one of the Society of Composers and Publishers’ Film Composers to Watch, Gavin Brivik has won numerous awards, including the World Soundtrack Award for Best Composition by a Young International Composer, the ASCAP Jimmy Van Heusen Film Composer Award, the Alan Menken Composer Award, and the Elmer Bernstein Film Scoring Award. Brivik recently scored the Golden Globe and Emmy-winning Warner Bros./ HBO Max series The Pitt; Daniel Goldhaber’s Faces of Death; and Russell Goldman’s Sender, which premiered at SXSW in 2026. Other notable credits include Neon’s How to Blow Up a Pipeline, directed by Goldhaber in 2023; Wild Indian, directed by Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr., which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival—the score was nominated for a World Soundtrack Award—A&E’s documentary Series The Secrets of Playboy; Paramount/

Multi-Academy and Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer, Finneas O’Connell has quietly emerged as an unassumingly ubiquitous presence in popular music and culture. He introduced a heartfelt and hypnotic style on 2019’s debut Blood Harmony EP highlighted by the goldcertified “Let’s Fall in Love for the Night.” He unveiled his full-length debut, The Optimist on Interscope Records in 2021,

performing live at festivals such as Coachella.

John Candy: I Like Me

Composer Tyler Strickland is an Emmy Award-winning film composer and music producer based in Los Angeles. In the past 15 years, Strickland has

scored more than 80 films and series that have collectively received more than a dozen Emmy nominations and have won numerous awards from the most prestigious film festivals worldwide. Most recently, he composed the score for Amazon MGM’s TIFFpremiered documentary, John Candy: I Like Me, for which he received an HMMA nomination for Best Documentary Score. His project highlights include composing for Stephen King’s Castle Rock for Hulu, Netflix’s Chef’s Table universe, hit truecrime series like Hulu’s The Fox Hollow Murders, Peacock’s John Wayne Gacy: Devil In Disguise, and HBO’s epic sixhour series, Edge Of the Earth Strickland won an Emmy Award for his score to the six-part Netflix series Cat People and another Emmy nomination for HBO’s Navajo Police: Class 57 series.

Other recent releases include Peter Cilella’s sci-fi thriller Descendent starring Ross Marquand and Sarah Bolger, which premiered at SXSW and was released theatrically by IFC. Strickland is currently collaborating with Academy Award winning director Frank Marshall on his next film based on Fleetwood Mac.

Breton Vivian

The Madison

Breton Vivian stands out in today’s field of film and television composers, staking his reputation on music that favors depth over grandstanding and nuance over noise. With an Emmy nomination and prominent work on Taylor Sheridan’s television phenomenon, Yellowstone and its spinoffs, Vivian has emerged as a significant contributor to the tone and atmosphere of contemporary prestige series. Vivian’s musical sensibilities did not grow from the classical conservatory alone. His early years as a guitarist in English punk and metal bands lend his scores a lived-in intensity and an unfussy authenticity, qualities that make his compositions feel rooted and immediate rather than ornamental.

This perspective proved invaluable as he moved into film, notably with his recent work on Guan Hu’s Black Dog, which won Un Certain Regard at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Here, Vivian’s music moved between minimalist unease and understated lyricism, complementing

rather than overpowering the film’s narrative. Vivian works in the service of the story, using his understanding of contemporary and classical forms to reinforce what is already there and to subtly alter the audience’s emotional register, often without their realization.

Imperfect Women

● Annie Weisman is creator, showrunner and executive producer of the drama series Imperfect Women, based on Araminta Hall’s novel of the same name. The series follows three women, who have been friends since college, as they navigate the ups and downs of long-term friendship with secrets and moments of camaraderie. However, everything is uprooted when their friend Nancy (Kate Mara) unexpectedly dies. Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington round out the trio. Joel Kinnaman, Corey Stoll and Leslie Odom Jr., are also included in the cast.

Murderbot

● Based on the first novella in Martha Wells’ book series, Murderbot is a sci-fi

thriller/comedy about a selfhacking security construct, played by Alexander Skarsgård, who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. In Season 1, Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe. In addition to starring in the series, Skarsgård also serves as an executive producer. David Dastmalchian, Noma Dumezweni, John Cho and Clark Gregg also star.

Alien: Earth

● In the year 2120, the Earth is governed by five corporations. In this era, human hybrids with both biological and artificial parts, known as cyborgs, exist alongside humans. But a rift emerges when a second competing corporation unlocks a new technological advancement: humanoid robots infused with human consciousness. The first prototype named Wendy (Sydney Chandler) marks a new evolution in the race for immortality. After a third corporation’s spaceship collides into the city, Wendy and

Scott Gemmill, The Pitt is a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modernday emergency department in Pittsburg. The 15-episode seasons resemble action in realtime over the course of a single 15-hour ED shift. The show stars Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, Patrick Ball and Shawn Hatosy.

● Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, this mysterycomedy revolves around a trio of strangers—Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Martin—who decide to investigate a suspicious death in their apartment building and start a true-crime podcast.
