FROM THE CORNER OFFICE

RED MEAT YIELD

by Harold Bertz, AGA Executive Director

T

here has been a large movement in the beef industry to study the effectiveness of the current United States Department of Agriculture Yield Grade system, propose a more accurate measure and implement a process to absolutely measure carcass composition. Why the need to change the yield grade system? It no longer reflects value to the producer, processor or consumer. Implemented in 1965, the current USDA Yield Grade equation was based on research done in 1960 at Texas A&M University. A group of scientists fabricated 162 beef carcasses to predict the percentage of closely trimmed retail cuts from the round, loin, rib and chuck primals. This research landed on a model that included four factors: a single measurement of external fat thickness, surface area of the ribeye, hot carcass weight, and percentage of kidney, pelvic, and heart (KPH) fat. While beef quality grades like USDA Prime and USDA Choice are well understood across beef industry segments and our customers, yield grades are not well understood by industry participants and not understood at all by consumers. Value-based grid marketing systems have been an important factor in improving carcass quality, increasing profit opportunities for finished cattle owners and improved consumer eating experience. These things have pushed beef demand to the levels we are currently enjoying today. Unfortunately, yield grade plays a limited or nonexistent role in determining true carcass value. Studies have shown that up to 50% of the variation in red meat yield is accounted for by factors not used in the current yield grade equation.

4 | GELBVIEH WORLD

Cattle have also changed since the yield grade system was adopted in 1965. At that time, the primary market were all British-origin breeds. With the introduction of continental breeds in the 1970s, cattle became larger and faster growing. During the past 20 years, a major focus has been on improving quality and consumer experience. An average beef animal today possesses more marbling and is heavier than they have ever been. Carcass weight has increased over five pounds year over year for the past 60 years. Genetic tools for selection and growthpromoting technologies have improved and had a profound impact on animal performance and carcass composition. Genomic selection for quality, increased performance and carcass composition have accelerated red meat yield. Couple these with the advancements in hormonal implants and beta-agonists, and we have seen universally larger carcass weights and muscle mass again producing more red meat yield. Grid-based marketing systems have worked extremely well. Through monetary incentive for carcass quality, we have genetically improved carcass quality to a high level. Conversely, some cattle now carry more fat and have less true muscle and thus, less red meat yield. The highest value cuts have traditionally been from the middle meats, loin and rib, therefore less emphasis has been placed on highly developed round and chuck primals. Considering the entire red meat yield of an animal more accurately captures the value of the entire carcass and better captures the value of previously undervalued primals. What does red meat yield mean for Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle? Gelbvieh cattle have always been known for their muscle shape and carcass weight,

traits that correlate highly with red meat yield. Over the past five years, steers in the Scale & Rail Steer Testing Contest sponsored by the American Gelbvieh Foundation, have averaged an amazing 64.1% dressing percentage. This reinforces that Gelbvieh-influenced cattle will be competitive in a pricing formula that involves total carcass composition as well as quality grade. The value of the Gelbvieh female’s ability to add 22.7 pounds of weaning weight to her calf is quickly becoming the talk of the industry. More research is ongoing for more fitness traits that Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle are noted for, like heifer pregnancy, fertility, and longevity. The opportunity for a commercial cattle producer to use Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls that result in increased weaning weights, replacement females with improved fertility and longevity, and increased red meat yield of steer calves puts this breed in very rarified air. There are more steps necessary to revamp the yield grade system, but research is moving this objective forward quickly. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is active in supporting and assisting in this process. It is good for AGA members; it is good for the industry. More information will be published in the coming months, and I encourage you to study it and discover how to incorporate it into increasing your ranch’s profitability. The cattle AGA members have been improving for decades are the future of the industry. I look forward to seeing you down the road.F

COMMUNICATIONS MESSAGE

PROUD OF THE BREED YOU’VE BUILT by Megan Underwood, AGA Communications Coordinator

I

t’s officially fall and with the changing of the leaves comes fall calves, harvest and of course, football season. Some of you may be cheering for your alma maters every Saturday, your favorite NFL team on Sundays, or even making the role of head coach of your fantasy football team your entire personality. For me, I will be proudly wearing my purple and cheering for the Kansas State University Wildcats in a sea of people wearing blue and cheering for the other (Kentucky) wildcats. Having been an out-of-state student at K-State, I didn’t grow up hearing the stories of how K-State football grew from bad to great under the leadership of coach Bill Snyder, but I did get to experience the last year of the Synder era. Later in my college experience, I would learn that the song, “Proud of the House We Built” by Brooks and Dunn was played at each game as a testament to the growth in the K-State football program under coach Snyder’s leadership and truly being proud of what the football

6 | GELBVIEH WORLD

program has built for the university. Just like K-State worked hard to make a name for themselves and gain their loyal fanbase, the American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) has experience much of the same growth over the last 55 years. Gelbvieh breeders have worked hard to improve the breed they love and should be proud of the breed they’ve built. Now, it’s time for the beef industry to recognize the breed and with that I am excited to launch the brand-new AGA logo suite and enter a new era of growth, awareness and recognition. The new AGA logo was designed to give the association and breed an image that individuals can associate with the breed while speaking to its strength. Staying true to the green roots of the AGA, the new logo has a modern look with a female included to recognize the maternal strengths of the breed. This new logo will be used to create growth of breed awareness and recognition, as we continue to work to spread the Gelbvieh

message within the beef industry. The logo suite was designed to include multiple icons and color schemes so the logo can be used on every social media post, marketing handout, and in apparel to create strong brand recognition Creating the new logo suite was a group effort, and I am thankful for the input I received from the AGA board of directors, breed promotion committee, and staff, to direct the development of the logo. Additionally, I want to thank Cheyenne Swoope Good with Half Cent Designs for making our vision come to life. AGA members and stakeholders should be proud of the breed they have built and are sure to remain forever loyal and true to what the breed has to offer. The new AGA logo was designed to share this message and will be utilized to create breed awareness, growth and recognition, as we enter the next era of the AGA with an exciting new look.F

INTRODUCING AMNESTY MONTH – FEBRUARY 2027

Amnesty Month gives members an opportunity to reactive eligible registered Gelbvieh and Balancer females for the 2027 production year without paying previously missed herd assessments. Program Rules: • Any Gelbvieh or Balancer registered female requiring a 2027 herd assessment is eligible to receive the 2027 assessment without penalty of previously missed assessments. Whether the female’s last assessment was completed in 2015 or 2025, she may be reactivated for the 2027 production year by paying only the 2027 herd assessment fee. • The female will receive only a 2027 herd assessment credit, which allows the member to register one natural born 2027 calf or set of twins, submit performance data for the 2027 calf, and complete an ownership transfer for the female sold in 2027. • This program does not cover missed herd assessments from prior years. Reactivation through Amnesty Month applies only to the 2027 production year and does not bring the female current for previous years. • If a member wishes to register calves from prior years, all applicable fees must be paid according to the current amnesty rules (last herd assessment applied in 2023 or before). • Foundation females, AMXX commercial females, and registration of ET calves are not eligible under this program.

FALL HARVEST: A SEASON OF WORK, WONDER, AND WATCHING CALVES GROW by Teagan Butterfield, AGJA President

F

all arrives quietly on the plains, slipping in with crisp mornings, golden light, and the familiar hum of harvest equipment rolling across fields. For many people, autumn is about pumpkins, sweaters, and warm drinks. But for those of us rooted in agriculture, fall is something deeper. It’s the season where hard work meets reward, where the year’s efforts finally come full circle, and where the ranch comes alive with

a kind of magic you can only feel when you’re out among the cattle.

Harvest is more than gathering crops, it’s gathering moments. The long days in the field, the dust hanging in the air, the steady rhythm of machinery, and the satisfaction of seeing grain pour into the truck remind us all why we do what we do. There’s pride in knowing the land has given back after months of care and patience. There’s comfort in the traditions that repeat year after year. And there’s excitement in the small things that For all your AI needs: make fall special.

SAVE THE DATE! 10 | GELBVIEH WORLD

One of those things, maybe the best thing, is the calves. Fall is the season when the calves start to show who they’re going to be. Their personalities come out. Their structure becomes clearer. Their presence – whether quiet confidence or bold curiosity starts to shine. Walking through

the pasture or checking pairs becomes more than a chore. It becomes a chance to look closely, to study, to imagine what each calf might become. For anyone who loves showing cattle, fall is the beginning of the fun. This is when you start picking favorites, even if you pretend, you’re not. Maybe it’s the heifer with the perfect front end, the bull calf with that stout hip, or the one that always walks right up to you like he already knows he’s special. You watch them grow, compare them, and picture them clipped, fitted, and standing proud in the show ring next summer. There’s something about fall light that makes calves look even better. The sun hits their hair just right, giving them that warm glow that makes you pause and think, “Yep, that one’s going to be something.” And as the leaves change and the air cools, the excitement builds. You’re not just harvesting crops you’re harvesting potential. Fall is a season of gratitude. Gratitude for the land, the livestock, the work, and the moments that remind you why you love this life. Loving fall isn’t just about the beauty of the season. It’s about the calves that make you smile, the future show prospects that spark your imagination, and the feeling of standing in a pasture knowing you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.F

REGISTRY TIPS N’ TRICKS

DNA RESULTS KEY

by Shianna Ocken, AGA Registry Coordinator

A

s preparation for bull sale season is in full swing, members and producers are in the heat of collecting DNA samples, submitting them to the lab and understanding the results that are sent back. The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) hopes that these results prove to be helpful to your operation.

•

•

Here are some helpful tips and information for a successful DNA season.

GENERAL TERMS: •

•

Qualified- Indicates that the parent registration number listed has been confirmed and verified through the DNA parentage test and IS the parent. Qualified = Match Excluded- Indicates that the parent registration number listed does NOT verify through the DNA parentage test. Excluded = NOT a match

EXCLUDED ANIMALS? WHAT TO DO? If the tested animal is excluded in your DNA order, and you have alternate parents to try against the tested animal(s), you can submit alternative options. To do so, please email dna@gelbvieh.org with registration numbers of alternate sires and/or dams and which animals you need them verified to. Please also include the mating for the sire/dam. •

Example: Please try Sires AMGV1234567 (AI), AMGV7654321 (PE) to calf AMGV5678910

Please allow up to 3 business days for retries and allow extra time for weekends, holidays and during busy (spring/fall) seasons.

12 | GELBVIEH WORLD

•

Mating Qualified- Indicates that both the sire and dam registration numbers are qualified, and the mating between the two parents is confirmed. Markers not on FileIndicates that the parent registration number listed does not have DNA on file for parentage comparison at this time. Therefore, the association can NOT confirm nor deny the resulting progeny. If you feel this is incorrect, please reach out to dna@gelbvieh.org. Genetic Defects• Carrier: AMC, NHC, OSC, DDC. Animal has been confirmed and carries the genetic defect listed. Animals that are carriers can still be registered, and results are uploaded to the animal’s pedigree. •

Free: AMF, NHF, OSF, DDF. Animal had been confirmed NOT to carry the genetic defect listed. The animal’s results will be uploaded to the pedigree.

GENOMIC-ENHANCED ANIMALS Genomically-enhanced EPDs will show up in yellow on the Animal’s EPD profile once they are available. This process could take up to two weeks after DNA has been uploaded. Genomic data is applied to the animal’s EPDs with the routine BOLT analysis that runs weekly. For example, the BOLT analysis picks up every Sunday evening, and then it runs for an entire week. After the analysis is completed, the enhanced EPDs will be

posted to the animal’s pedigree the next Tuesday and can be noted with the yellow highlighted EPDs. Please see the timeline below:

FAILED SAMPLES Failed Samples have been run through processing twice to try and achieve a quality data report to you. If you wish to receive results on the animal(s) with a failed sample, you will need to resubmit a new sample. In the case of a failed sample or no result (NR), members are responsible for the cost of the test on a sample resubmission. It is recommended to consider using a different sample type than the one that has previously failed. If your animal had a failed blood card, try a TSU or hair card. Please consider if your animal could be a twin, as blood cards will fail on twin animals.

NEED NEW CERTIFICATES PRINTED? Please contact registry@gelbvieh.org for any requests on registration certificates that need reprinted with updated parentage or EPDs. Please include registration numbers on the animals you need.

the customer representatives nor the AGA staff know exactly what caused a sample to fail. Please see the Common Reasons for Failed Samples PDF on our website. Please remember, these samples have completed two rounds of processing (second free of charge to you) to try and achieve results. Q: Where can I view my DNA order results? A: There are multiple ways to view the results of a DNA order. To view results on a specific animal, pull up the Animal Detail Screen of the animal you wish to view results. This screen should display the animal’s info. In the center of the Detail Screen, select the tab labeled “DNA”.

From here, you can see the results of the testing, the test type, conditions results, trait results, and resubmit for additional testing in this page. To view results of the Entire DNA Order,

select the tab labeled “Herd Mgmt” on the left side of the screen. From there, select the tab labeled “DNA”. Q: I selected “AI Sire” or “Donor Dam” on my DNA tests, why doesn’t my animal have a Permit yet? A: Selecting “AI Sire/Donor Dam” on the Reasons portion of the DNA testing is strictly there to help you know what testing is needed for AI Sires and Donor Dams. Once DNA testing is complete, a donor dam permit or AI Sire permit can be purchased on the animal’s detail screen. If the option to purchase a permit is not available, please reach out to registry@gelbvieh.org or dna@gelbvieh.org.F

DNA TESTING DONE RIGHT: BEST PRACTICES FOR SUCCESSFUL RESULTS

W

by Wayde Pickinpaugh, AGA DNA Services Coordinator

ith spring bull sale season just ahead, DNA season is in full swing. As breeders prepare cattle for upcoming sales, now is the time to make sure DNA testing is one of the first items on the checklist, not something left until the last minute. A little preparation can go a long way toward preventing failed samples, delays and unnecessary costs.

Collect samples when cattle are already being worked to save time and labor. Samples can be stored for later submission when properly collected and stored. Below is a tentative calendar with suggested times for testing based on sale dates. It is important to allow extra time for holidays, busy season, mailing times, and even weather.

The American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) DNA team works hard to make the process as smooth as possible. The following best practices can help ensure your next DNA order is successful from start to finish.

DNA TEST EARLY One of the best ways to avoid a lastminute DNA problem is to DNA test animals well before you need the results. Testing early gives you time to address potential issues such as a sample that fails in the laboratory, parentage that does not verify, a sample that is accidentally assigned to the wrong animal, or additional testing that may be required.

14 | GELBVIEH WORLD

Before submitting your DNA request, take the time to double check the animal, registration number, sample barcode, and your DNA request. AGA’s online DNA order form requires the barcode associated with each animal to be entered. AGA recommends having your samples and registration numbers organized so that you can quickly identify the correct barcode for each animal. A DNA result is only useful if it is attached to the correct animal.

SUPPLY ALL POTENTIAL PARENTS WHEN REQUESTING PARENTAGE

ORDER YOUR DNA SUPPLIES BEFORE YOU NEED THEM Don’t wait until cattle are in the chute to realize you don’t have enough tissue sampling units (TSUs) or blood/hair cards. Before your next round of DNA collection, take inventory of your supplies and order what you need by calling the AGA office or sending an email to dna@gelbvieh.org. Pricing for DNA sample supplies includes the cost below plus shipping: • Tissue Sampling Units (TSUs) 10 pack - $27.50 • TSU Applicators - $80 • Blood Cards - $0.75 • Hair Cards - $5.00

DOUBLE-CHECK EVERY ANIMAL AND BARCODE

AVOID FAILED DNA TESTS Before collecting, make sure the area being collected is clean and free of manure, dirt or other material that could interfere with the sample. • TSUs: Make sure the ear is relatively clean before collecting a tissue sample. After collecting the sample, check the tube to make sure the tissue punch dropped into the vial and that it is properly sealed. Before mailing, make sure the vial contains the buffer liquid and is not dry as the sample will be rejected at the lab. • Hair Cards: Pull from a clean area and make sure the hair follicles are free of fecal matter, dirt or other contamination. The lab needs at least 20-30 follicles for testing. • Blood Cards: Allow blood cards to dry completely before storing or mailing. Samples that remain damp can develop mold and may fail testing. Do not submit blood samples on twins, they will fail.

When submitting animals for parent verification, please include additional sires and dams if there are multiple options to speed up the parent verification process. When DNA is completed, results will be uploaded based on the original sire and dam the animal was registered. Please give the DNA team 24 hours to check the provided additional sires and dams.

REQUEST ALL NECESSARY TESTS Before submitting a DNA request, make sure you are requesting all the testing your animal needs. Depending on the animal and its intended use, this may include: • Walking Sires: 100K • A.I. Sires/Donor Dams: 100K, conditions, and parent verification When in doubt, call the AGA office or email dna@gelbvieh.org before submitting your DNA testing requests.F

MARKETING MINUTE

PREMIUM PULSE AWARDS: AGA CARCASS MERIT RECOGNITION PROGRAM

by Tom Strahm, AGA Commercial Marketing Director

T

he Premium Pulse Awards program recognizes producers and feeders who raise and market superior Gelbvieh and Balancer®influenced cattle with exceptional carcass merit. By highlighting cattle that perform well on grid and value-based marketing systems, the program showcases the real-world value of genetics that deliver quality, consistency and profitability. We want to highlight Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics that meet or exceed multiple benchmarks and ultimately produce carcasses with a superior combination of economically relevant traits. The primary value drivers currently include quality grade, yield grade and hot carcass weight. Over the last twenty years, more cattle have achieved USDA Prime while there are fewer cattle grading USDA Select all the time. In 2026, 15% of all fed cattle harvested in the United States are grading USDA Prime and 8% of cattle are grading USDA Select. Consumers have overwhelmingly demonstrated they love well marbled, high-quality beef and that it is their protein of choice. It remains important for cattle producers to maintain genetic selection pressure for increased marbling so that a greater percentage of cattle will have at least a modest amount of marbling at harvest time. A modest degree of marbling is needed to grade average choice. Quality matters and a high degree of marbling is going to continue to be of utmost importance.

16 | GELBVIEH WORLD

The current USDA yield grade equation was developed in the 1960s and it is no longer as accurate as it once was. Current research is leading to the development of tools that will more accurately measure carcass composition of muscle, fat and bone. It’s likely that in the future modern technology will be used to more accurately measure red meat yield and replace USDA yield grade. Gelbvieh cattle continue to excel at producing red meat yield. Muscle matters and it will likely matter more in the future than it has in the past. That being said, we need to produce cattle with a desirable balance of traits. This would include more muscle on average, and carcasses that grade upper 2/3 USDA Choice and USDA Prime without excessive backfat. Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics can be part of the solution to producing high value beef products in a marketplace where both muscle and quality matter. Please submit your entries for the Premium Pulse awards program to the AGA marketing team to be considered for recognition by November 30, 2026, for all cattle harvested in 2026.F

Jeff Loveless

IN THE HEAT OF THE

NIGHT The Widemouth 2 Fire changed everything for the Loveless Gelbvieh herd.

by MEGAN UNDERWOOD, M.S.

18 | GELBVIEH WORLD

L

ife can change in the blink of an eye, and for Jeff Loveless his changed at 4 a.m. on August 2, 2026, when he received a phone call that his forest permit for the entire Loveless Gelbvieh herd was in the Widemouth 2 Fire’s path. Jeff and his ranch hand loaded five horses into the trailer and left Spanish Fork, Utah, to make the 100 mile trip down to Meadow, driving 90 miles an hour down I-15. By the time they arrived, all the land in the Loveless Gelbvieh forest permit was fully engulfed in flames leaving Jeff feeling utterly helpless as all he could do was sit and watch the fire burn everything in its path. The Widemouth 2 Fire originally started by a lightning strike on the ranch of one of Jeff ’s customers and as of July 31, the fire was completely contained and surrounded by a fire line. However, on August 2, at 12:30 a.m. the fire jumped the fire line and by 5 a.m. the fire had moved nine miles. The firefighters on scene had never seen anything like the Widemouth 2 Fire as it is unusual for a fire to move so far and so fast in the middle of the night. This is the third fire that the Lovelesses have experienced on their forest permit in the over 30 years they have ran cattle on it. The other two fires burned through, and they never lost a cow, however, this fire was another story.

The fire burned so hot it burned everything in its path right down to the rocks. The next day, Aug. 3, the entire Loveless family arrived down at the ranch to head up the mountain on horseback to locate the cows. The Lovelesses started using virtual fencing collars on all their cows this year and they were very helpful in locating the cattle. With the use of the collars, they knew which cows had been killed in the fire, and which were still alive before they started their climb up the mountain. The virtual map of the cows helped the crew get to the cattle

faster as they were able to show the forest service and firefighters exactly where they were to get permission to enter. The crew was able to get around 30 cows out and down the mountain that day while dodging hotspots on horseback. On Aug. 8, Jeff ’s daughter could still see that there were cows alive near Meadow Creek as their collars were still tracking their every move. They went further up the mountain and found six more cow/calf pairs in the pines that were all burned out. The cattle were burned bad, especially their feet. Loading them on the trailer, wasn’t easy as they were traumatized from the fire and what they had survived. The next day, the crew was able to locate the final nine pairs still alive even higher up the mountain. Unfortunately, around 40% of the Loveless Gelbvieh herd was lost in the Widemouth 2 Fire. The majority of them were found near a water trough where they had bedded down for the night. Some of the cattle had run down the hill toward Meadow Creek, with many of them being killed before making it down the hill or even right in the creek. Overall, they lost around 40 cow/ calf pairs and 10 bred replacement heifers. What makes the loss even more heartbreaking is almost each cow or replacement heifer lost were all carrying A.I. pregnancies which would become the 2027 calf-crop. OCTOBER 2026 | 19

20 | GELBVIEH WORLD

THE AFTERMATH The cattle who survived are currently going through what Jeff calls “Tami Care”. Tami, Jeff ’s wife, is doctoring their hides daily with medication used to treat maggot infestations to aid in their hopeful recovery. Unfortunately, the Lovelesses have lost more through the aftermath as their injuries were too severe to heal. However, the survivors are still not in the clear as the internal impact is still to be revealed. One of the major concerns is their lung health with the amount of smoke and ash they breathed, and if they will regain enough lung strength to ever graze on the mountain again. While the future of the Loveless Gelbvieh herd leaves Jeff and Tami with many decisions, one thing is for certain – they will not give up. Questions surrounding

the health of the herd that remains, where the herd will graze while the permit recovers over the next couple of years, and how will they rebuild, has caused sleepless nights for the Lovelesses. Rebuilding the Loveless Gelbvieh herd will be a unique challenge as they can simply not purchase replacement females from just anywhere. They had built their females for their specific environment and not just any female can reach her full potential. Their females had been developed for high elevation, knew the mountain range and where to find water, and their genetics were from years of selection and hard work to make the herd what it was on the day the fire blazed through. While many ranchers are no strangers to wildfires, the Widemouth 2 Fire coupled

with the unique terrain of the Loveless Gelbvieh forest permit made the fire especially challenging for cattle survival as the cattle are racing against the speed of the fire to make it to safety. However, the Lovelesses herd had to navigate big, very steep mountains that are not easy to navigate on a good day, let alone when the mountain is going up in flames. The Lovelesses and their neighbors have been blessed with great support from family and friends that have been their rocks through some of the worst moments of their lives. They are thankful to have found surviving cows who are making recoveries and will continue to carry on the legacy of Loveless Gelbvieh. While you never know what life has in store, you can always find beauty in the ashes.F

OVER THE FENCE

WITH ALEX WARSTLER by GRACE SCHULETER, AGA INTERN

A

lex Warstler and his family’s roots in the cattle business run almost a century deep. The multi-generational family operation, located in Riverton, Kansas, began with Alex’s great-grandfather, Ivan Warstler, raising composite Shorthorn cattle in the 1940s. Ivan later left the cattle business, but Alex’s father, Brett Warstler, and grandfather, Vern Warstler, decided to get back into cattle in the 1990s. What started as a serious hobby has since grown into a 400 head commercial cow/calf operation. Alex’s introduction to Gelbvieh came through a lifelong friend, Jerry Wilkins. At just six years old, Alex bought his first Gelbvieh cow from Wilkins, a female that would go on to become the foundation of his future herd. Soon after the operation started heavily breeding their herd, which was predominantly Limousin at the time, with Gelbvieh genetics. Once they had established their Gelbvieh herd, the operation incorporated Red Angus and Black Angus genetics to build its Balancer® program. Seven years ago, the family purchased its first group of Gelbvieh bulls from Judd Ranch Inc. bringing a higher percentage of Gelbvieh genetics back into their Balancer females. They liked what they saw and haven’t looked back since. Today, Gelbvieh genetics remain an important part of Alex’s breeding program as he continues to build a productive,

24 | GELBVIEH WORLD

functional cow herd that will stand the test of time.

WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO GELBVIEH GENETICS AND KEPT YOU COMMITTED OVER TIME?

WHAT ARE YOUR NONNEGOTIABLES WHEN SELECTING HERD SIRES?

When evaluating bulls for our program, one of the very first things I want is to have as much information as possible about his dam. More importantly, is his mother still alive? Is his granddam still Fertility, longevity and docility were alive? What kind of production history the traits that initially drew us toward have those females demonstrated within Gelbvieh genetics, and they are qualities the operation? Because the bull is not we have continued to prioritize in our the final product. Every bloodline, every program. Even as we incorporated a pedigree, old or new, needs to continue to higher percentage of Angus into our have at its core the goal of producing the Balancer cattle, we were intentional functional female: the type of cow that about maintaining at least 25% Gelbvieh is structurally sound, docile, productive, influence. I believe there is something unique about the Gelbvieh female and her and capable of maintaining a successful status quo or pushing the program to the ability to consistently raise a productive next level by producing a better cow or calf and did not want to diminish that in bull than herself. our Balancer females. In my mind, the Gelbvieh female has always been, and will Over the years, I believe that we have continue to be, the kind of mother cow that every breed should strive to emulate. produced sufficient calving ease into our cattle; so now we are looking to add If Gelbvieh breeders continue to produce the phenotypic punch and growth into cattle that are easy fleshing, sound footed, our cattle that only the Gelbvieh breed can produce. However, we do not want adequately milking and docile, I believe there is a tremendous opportunity for the to take that to an extreme. Everything breed to be recognized for the qualities it in moderation. Our ideal mature cow has contributed to the United States cattle weighs around 1,400 pounds. That may be too large for some operations or too small industry since its introduction. Gelbvieh for others, but for our environment in has the ability to serve as a maternal southeast Kansas, I believe a 1,400-pound foundation while adding efficient mature cow is in the ‘Goldilocks zone’ for pounds to commercial cattle, ultimately our program. It is a weight we strive to increasing profitability for the maintain in our program while keeping American rancher. the cattle moderate. Part of that cow

size philosophy comes from living in fescue country, which is unforgiving on the wrong cattle. The cows we raise and the bulls we purchase need to be able to convert endophyte rich fescue into pounds that pay. So, when they are thick, stout and slick haired in our part of the country, that produces a level of confidence and certainty that we are producing cattle that’ll work almost anywhere in the United States. When selecting bulls, both for mature cows and heifers, I am not necessarily chasing the extremes, because I believe our cattle already possess the milk and growth potential we need within their pedigrees. Instead, I am looking for substantial rib and body capacity, along with a large ribeye area. Structural correctness is also extremely important to me, particularly sound feet. If the goal is to produce beef for the consumer, before those cattle ever make it to the table, they have to come from bulls and cows that stay sound, functional and productive on the farm.

HOW DO YOU MARKET YOUR CATTLE? Social media has become an increasingly important part of how we market our cattle and tell the story of our operation. It gives us an opportunity to showcase the cattle we are raising, share what we are doing on the farm and connect with people well beyond our immediate area. In today’s cattle industry, having a strong social media presence allows potential customers to see our cattle, our

management practices and the kind of program we are building before they ever visit the farm. We have also developed a strong relationship with the Quapaw Tribe in our area, which purchases the majority of our steers. That relationship came about through connections within the cattle industry, and they have been very pleased with the performance of our cattle. The first group of steers we sold to the tribe reached their benchmark weight approximately 30 days ahead of the other cattle they were comparing them to. That performance helped demonstrate the value of a crossbred program, particularly one incorporating a significant amount of Gelbvieh genetics. We also see social media as an important tool for marketing our locally raised beef. We currently sell approximately 15 to 20 steers a year directly to friends and family, and social media has helped us reach more people who are interested in knowing where their beef comes from. Once people taste locally raised beef and have a positive experience, they often want to come back for more. There is a strong demand for locally raised beef, and social media gives us a way to build those relationships and communicate directly with our customers.

for Warstler Hay & Cattle.

WHAT ARE SOME GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR YOUR OPERATION MOVING FORWARD? One of our biggest goals over the next few years is to establish a meat shop where we can sell locally raised beef directly to our community. I believe there is a tremendous opportunity for those who are willing to recognize the demand and pursue it, and beef is a product with a strong market. I really enjoy that entrepreneurial aspect of the cattle business. As we continue to expand our herd, we anticipate selling more commercial heifers private treaty. As we further develop our registered program, we would also like to begin marketing bulls. Ultimately, our goal is to establish the Warstler name and build a reputation for producing easy-fleshing, easy-doing, docile cows that consistently put pounds on calves for the American rancher. At Warstler Hay & Cattle, we have a clear goal and vision for the future. We believe we can build a program that benefits not only our operation, but also the cattlemen and communities around us and beyond.F

As our operation continues to grow, I think the ability to market directly to consumers and cattle producers will become even more important. Social media allows us to share our story, build credibility and ultimately create a name OCTOBER 2026 | 25
