What a great time to be in the cattle business!
Record prices and record profits sure make it easy to be in a good mood these days. Add in the sunshine and extremely nice weather for this time of year and life almost seems too good to be true. But don’t kid yourself, it’s not all sunshine and summertime. It is important to take advantage of these historic times and be sure to set yourself up to succeed for years to come. Build a plan to move your operation forward and focus internally. Do what works for you and sets you up to meet your goals both short and long term.
We’re reminded this time of year, as we are calving and prepping for a bull sale, just how important convenience traits are these days. Good dispositions, teat and udder quality, calving ease, mothering ability and calf vigor are extremely important but can be hard to measure. We are always frustrated when that new hot bull we used and thought was going to be the next great herd builder crashes and burns on that first set of bred heifers because of convenience traits. We work hard to constantly and thoroughly cull our cowherd to maintain a high level of convenience traits. Our bulls will produce heifers that combine calving ease with performance and carcass in an all-in-one package including convenience traits to get the best of all worlds.
We are always honored and excited to have the opportunity to sit down with new customers and help them build a program that fits their needs. If you are lost in today’s overabundance of bulls, sales, breeds, etc. Give us a shout. We would be honored to help you build your future.
As always, we are humbled with our current customers. Your support and your loyalty to our program is one of a kind and truly appreciated. We couldn’t do this without you.
We look forward to seeing you sale day!
PARTNER WITH US FOR THE FUTURE!!!!

Lots 1-3: Wow!!! What a way to start off this year’s bull offering. This set of ET Brothers are as impressive as they come. They are full brothers to last year’s lead off bull. This new donor cow is a no miss kinda girl. She produces consistency, power, fleshing ability and fertility all in one package. Continue to watch for big things out of this Money Makin’ Mama. Their sire Flying H 287K is a Deer Valley Growth Fund son that has been a homerun since he topped the sale as a yearling. His sons continue to be front end bulls year after year and his daughters are standouts in the replacement pen. This set of ET brothers will produce steers that grow with plenty of power and carcass quality and heifers with fertility, longevity and eye appeal. This set of bulls will improve a cowherd all the way around. Pick one or take ‘em all, your choice.

What a way to introduce this year’s Post Rock Icon sire group. We couldn’t be happier with how Icon is working in our program. His sons are sound, deep, wide, moderate and big footed. This bull is no exception. His eye appeal will produce the type and kind of steers buyers want and his heifers will make your neighbors jealous. His mother is extremely feminine, sleek made and low maintenance with unmatched udder quality. Put this bull to work building your cowherd for the future.

Herd Bull Alert!!!! This red Powerhouse son will definitely be turning heads on sale day. He is as stout as they come with tons of base width, dimension, and depth of body all while maintaining great eye appeal. He is moderate and sound with a pedigree stacked with great sires and a cow family that traces back to the Pelton Red Angus program. Growth, Carcass and Maternal all in one package. Be sure to find him on Sale Day.

Another new sire group this year and what a great way to introduce them. This bull’s sire, Flying H Ironman, was our high seller in 2024 to Post Rock Cattle Co. Ironman’s dam has now proven herself and currently resides in our donor pen. Ironman is a powerhouse of a sire that puts tons of growth, power, frame, length and bone in his calves. Combine that with this bulls dam who is moderate, feminine, deep, easy keeping and clean made and you have the complete package in this bull. Power, eye appeal and maternal all in one package.

Another Flying H 287K son. Man, do they flat grow and get it done. This bull stacks 3 great donor cow families!!! Tons of growth and power in this bull all while maintaining maternal merit. If you are needing to add pounds to calves look no further. Look him up on sale day.

Recognize his sire??? Yep, here we go again. Flying H 287K producing growth, power and pounds. Look at those growth EPDs and Ratios. Added pounds on calves is a given here with this big topped, massive power kind of bull. You will truly appreciate his mass and depth of muscle when you get behind him. This bull will not be hard to find on sale day.
Do I need to say it?? Flying H 287K does it again. But let’s remember the females behind all of these bulls have to be good as well or it doesn’t work. This cow has always been one of my favorites. She is big and stout but still classy, feminine and good uddered at the same time. Again, growth, power, and pounds in this package. Look at those ratios and appreciate his performance while maintaining his eye appeal and depth of body to ensure he doesn’t melt away while he works for you.

Lots 10-13: Maternal dominance!!!! This is probably my favorite donor cow of all time when it comes to seeing her in the flesh. She is unmatched with her length and depth of body, extension out her front ⅓ and just overall eye appeal. She is definitely front pasture kind and the one you want all your neighbors to see. Couple that with her ability to flat produce amazing daughters that carry the same stamp and eye appeal as their mother along with the fertility to breed early and often. Then combine the maternal donor power of the Flying H 524K sire and you have a set of bulls that are extremely maternal in their design and makeup but still carry more than enough power to put you in the green on sale day. Keep every heifer out of these bulls and watch them produce you a cowherd for the future.

Lots 33-34: Check out this new Sire offering in the Red Bulls. Just N Time is making his place here at Flying H. He is producing bulls with look, power and that dark cherry color everyone always wants. These bulls are correct from the ground up and have plenty of power but where they really shine is maternal. Just N Time makes heifers that make your mouth water every time you get in the replacement pen. Use these bulls to improve your cowherd, you won’t be disappointed.

Lots 35-36: The ultimate donor cow. This lady has been rocking the donor pen for the last several years. She is the mother of Flying H 287K and his brothers. She also produced the top selling Whitewater sons from last year. Here is a set of brothers with a little different type and kind. These Purebred Gelbvieh bulls are sure to pack as much maternal merit as any bull around. They will not be the stoutest bulls in the pen but are sure to create steers with plenty of growth and carcass merit. They will create females that are low maintenance and easy on the feed bill. The Ascendance sire is another new addition for us this year. He was the high selling bull out of the Hojer Ranch and brings in a completely new pedigree for us. Can’t wait to get some of his daughters in production.

We make our registered cows work for a living. Our cows graze year round as the weather allows, including calving on cornstalks. Our heaviest supplement time is during AI season and then they are back to grass or cornstalks to make it on their own. We raise all of our calves including the fall calves on dam only with no creep feed. We wean all of our calves and background them on a grass hay/distillers based diet for a minimum for 60 days. This allows us to analyze our cows and calves and sort the less profitable cattle out of the operation.

retains 50% semen interest in every bull sold. The buyer receives 100% possession and resale or salvage value and 50% semen interest. - If Flying H Genetics chooses to utilize their semen interest, they will coordinate with the owner and pay all expenses for their semen. If a semen sales market develops on a bull, Flying H Genetics will work with the owner to promote and sell semen splitting the expenses and income 50/50. Again, this semen reserve does not affect the buyer’s ability to have full use of and receive full sale price for the bull with the semen reserve following the bull to the new owner. We estimate that this may only affect 1 or 2 bulls per year. If you have questions, please contact the FHG Staff at any time.
1. CE – Calving Ease: the higher the value the greater the calving ease expected in first calf heifers.
2. BW – Birth Weight: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of his ability to transmit more or less birth weight.
3. WW –Weaning Weight: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of his ability to transmit more or less pounds at weaning.
4. YW – Yearling Weight: expressed in pounds, is a predictor of his ability to transmit more or less pounds of yearling growth.
5. MK – Milk: is a predictor of his genetic potential for his daughter’s milk and mothering ability.
6. HP - Heifer pregnancy: Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season.
7. PG30 - 30-Month Pregnancy: Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers.
8. CW – Carcass Weight: expressed in pounds is a predictor of his ability to transmit more or less carcass weight.
9. RE – Ribeye Area: expressed in square inches, is a predictor of his ability to transmit more or less Ribeye area.
10. MB – Marbling: expressed as a USDA marbling score & reflects his ability to improve marbling.
11. MPI - Maternal Profit Index: EPDs weighted in this index are Calving Ease Direct (CED) and Maternal (CEM), Weaning Weight (WW), Milk (MILK), Mature Weight (MWT), Dry Matter Intake (DMI), Stayability (STAY), and Heifer Pregnancy (HP). This index should be used by commercial cattlemen whose production scenario includes the traditional marketing of calves at weaning and replacement retention from the herd.
12. FPI™ – Feeder Profit Index™: The new FPI formulation more precisely weights Economically Relevant Traits (ERTs) available for selection, including the key carcass traits of Carcass Weight (CW), Ribeye Area (REA), and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) that were not included in the original formulation. The new FPI also weights Fat Thickness (CFAT), post-weaning Average Daily Gain (ADG), and Calving Ease Direct (CED).
13. TPI - Total Profit Index: TPI balances both maternal and terminal selection criteria. TPI includes the largest and most diverse set of EPDs in the model, including carcass traits as the primary revenue drivers with cow Mature Weight (MWT), Stayability (STAY) and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) as cost drivers.
14. ADJ SC – Adjusted Scrotal Circumference: the 12-month adjusted scrotal size of yearling bulls.

16. FHG STAR RANKING SYSTEM—This system ranks cattle in five major areas of customer genetic needs—Disposition, Growth, Muscle, Carcass and Maternal. See page 24 and inside back cover for more details. Disposition—1H & 2H culled, 3H Good, 4H Better, 5H Best. Growth, Muscle, Carcass and Maternal—3H ranking identifies breed average genetics for the trait, a 4H ranks them within the top 50% to 25% of the breed and a 5H ranks them within the top 25% of the breed genetically for the traits. Information used to develop these rankings includes performance measurements of the individual animal, his sire and his dam, EPDs and ultrasound data. Our Star Ranking System combines all the data into a simple ranking system to help you easily find the specific genetics you need for a trait or combination of traits.
17. COLOR STATUS - Homo Black (will only produce black calves), Black (carrier of red color gene), or Red.
18. POLLED STATUS—Homo Polled (by pedigree or DNA test) will produce only polled calves, Polled or Scurred (not horned).

Because disposition is a very important management and safety issue, Flying H Genetics has researched and developed a system to score all of their cattle, including any cattle sold for breeding purposes, for disposition to eliminate the unacceptable ones. We have been culling on disposition for years but scoring them quantifies and indentifies them more accurately making culling more accurate and effective.
Cattle are a herd instinct animal. Seperate them from the herd and their natural response is to flee back to the group or fight for their life. Domesticating them has gentled them but their natural instincts of flight and fight are still there at varying degrees Generally, the sooner and more often cattle are in contact with and handled by humans in a calm, nonthreatening way, the more trusting and less flighty or threatened they will feel.
Knowing this, our system separates an individual animal from the group into a small pen with one or two people to add a common stressor. Since all cattle have a different disposition (just like people) this will create different degrees of nervousness, flight and fight that can be scored. Scoring the different levels of nervousness, flight and fight allows us to identify different levels of disposition. The scores range from 1 to 5 with 5 being the most calm. This is a subjective score but certain actions help group the cattle into the five different levels. Following is a general discription of the type of actions observed while scoring that help rank each individual’s disposition.
One Star–animal is very nervous and agitated and is looking for an escape route. Will not stop and stand, tests the fence and will show fight and turn on you if pressed. When the out gate is opened he leaves on the run. He’s always at the
back of a group, head up and keeps his distance. He will make others nervous and flighty and is hard to sort from the group. Anything new will create great distress and he will get more agitated the longer he’s held seperately. Due to safety issues these are culled immediately.
Two Star–animal is nervous and very uncomfortable. He will keep moving, walking the fence and trot or run if approached. Not as likely to show fight but will exit fast. Very observant and keeps his distance even in a group. He will be a little hard to sort from the group. He’s always nervous and flighty in a strange situation. He presents a safety concern and causes handling problems with the whole herd so is culled asap.
Three Star–animal is uncomfortable wanting to keep distance. He will stop but is very attentive and moves without much pressure. He’ll exit at a fast walk or slight trot. Handles fine in a group but gets nervous when seperated, wanting to rejoin the herd. Can get excited if pressured or forced out of comfort zone so low stress, low pressure handling helps.
Four Star–animal moves when pressure is applied but will stop easily. Will stand and allow you to approach but not get too close. Exits at a walk. Fast movements, load noises and strange situations will make him nervous. Low stress handling works great.
Five Star–animal is very calm and gentle, easy to sort and move. Will stand, allow you to approach and maybe touch him and may even approach you. Needs to be urged to leave the pen. Can get excited but calms down quickly. Responds well to proper handling.
Flying H Genetics - Additional Information
For an accurate ranking or comparison within the different breeds we use our 5 STAR INDEX to rank them so you can easily find bulls that fit the needs you have. Need more muscle? Pick 4 and 5 STAR MUSCLE bulls. Need a bull to produce replacement heifers? Pick bulls with 4 and 5 STARS for MATERNAL. There are a number of bulls that have 5 STARS for all traits which means they rank in the top 25% of their breed for all these traits—exceptional genetic packages. Our 5 STAR INDEX allows you to find the best genetics for your needs without having to know all the numbers and breed rankings
Since 2012 Gelbvieh, Balancer, Simmental, SimAngus and Red Angus EPDs have all been calculated by International Genetics Solutions based in Bozeman, Montana. Each breed has a slightly different average but all use the world’s largest multibreed data set with over 12,000,000 data points to calculate their EPDs and are comparable against each other. We offer you several genetic packages so you can select from the best genetics possible instead of being limited to just one breed or hybrid. What makes this extra special is that, since all breeds offered are evaluated genetically with the same data set and reported on the same base, they are comparable against each other.
Why pay $6 per pound for fat? The only reason bulls are fed fat is to make them look better because it increases their weights and they “look” thicker and smoother; none of this changes the genetics or pounds they transfer to their calves. Roughage ‘N Ready bulls are the real deal—what you see is what you get—and they will look better, not worse, because they will continue to grow instead of melting off 100 pounds of fat. If our weaning weights and yearling weights are less than you are used to, just add the 100 pound—fat—factor and I bet you’ll agree that they are as good as any in the industry
We offer you frame scores on every bull as an important piece of data to help quantify the potential mature size and composition of the bulls. After 30 years of frame scoring, I can tell you it is the least accurate measurement taken. Repeatability is the lowest of anything we measure, so we recommend that you use it but don’t get so specific that if it is a half a frame score taller or shorter than you like, don’t eliminate the bull just for his frame score. A half a frame score is only 1” and can be affected by how the bull holds his head or places his feet while taking the measurement. Obviously, there is a noticeable difference between a frame 5 and 6 bull but don’t discount a bull if he is a half score off from your ideal because you may eliminate a tremendous bull that will make you a lot of money

Because of the interest in, need for, and importance of correctly identifying bulls to be used on first calf heifers, Flying H Genetics has developed a “5 STAR SYSTEM”. This system ranks bulls we believe (and guarantee) will work on heifers and not cause above normal calving difficulty due to size and shape of the calf.
A “One Star” bull should work on larger, well-developed heifers with above average pelvic measurements.
“Three Star” bulls increase the comfort level and degree of calving ease and can be used in most heifer development situations.
“Five Star” heifer bulls give exceptional calving ease with little assistance expected, except in abnormal presentations, etc.
All bulls offered by Flying H Genetics that qualify to be guaranteed as heifer bulls will be identified by the 5 Star System
Even this system cannot guarantee every heifer bred to these bulls will calve unassisted. There are at least 16 different criterion that affect calving ease with birth weight being the largest factor. Other factors like sex of calf, shape of calf and size of bone, condition score of heifer, age of heifer, feed protein level, weather prior to and during calving, the heifers genetics for calving ease and birth weight, gestation length, heterosis, pelvic opening size and presentation of calf all affect calving ease.
The 5 Star System is not perfect but it will eliminate most problems caused by the genetics of the bulls breeding the heifers. And—if we find one that doesn’t work and he is guaranteed for calving ease on heifers with our 5 Star System—we will replace him with another bull of your choice with full credit from the original bull. It’s not perfect, but it is one of the best systems and guarantees you’ll find anywhere. Questions, call the FHG Staff.
