CES Launches ‘Library of Things’ for Students By Christian Maldonado Staff Writer

Instead of borrowing books, students at Chester Elementary School (CES) can now check out microscopes, telescopes, and other hands-on learning tools through a new initiative called the “Library of Things.” The program, developed by CES Media Specialist Susan Parodi in conjunction with

the Chester Parent-Teacher Organization, allows students to borrow items rather than traditional library materials. Similar programs have been introduced at public libraries across Connecticut in recent years, including the Chester Public Library, but CES is the first school in Region 4 to offer a Library of Things. Items may be borrowed for two weeks at a

time, giving students the opportunity to use them at home while still allowing others a chance to check them out. Parodi hopes the program will expand students’ access to creative, hands-on learning experiences. Initial items available for checkout include a microscope, telescope, rock tumbler, Easy See CES Launches page 10

‘Remember the Ladies’ Essex Edna stands dressed in an 18th-century gown and mobcap on Feb. 8 in Essex, where the Essex Historical Society and the Town of Essex America 250 Commission unveiled their annual display celebrating the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday. This year’s theme, “Remember the Ladies,” honors Abigail Adams’s 1776 appeal to her husband, John Adams, to consider women’s rights in the founding of the new government. The annual parade, originally scheduled for Feb. 1, was canceled due to cold weather. See story on page 9.
