RSD 17 Proposes Revised Budget After Defeat By Aaron Rubin Staff Writer KILLINGWORTH
Following a failed referendum last month, the Regional School District 17 Board of Education has proposed a revised budget that cuts about $390,000 in expenses from its initial proposal. Voters will decide the fate of the revised spending plan in a June 10 referendum.
The newly proposed budget totals $54,077,593 in educational expenditures for the next academic year. Most of the reductions come from special education and out-of-district tuition, where $250,000 was cut from the budget. In a letter to the Board of Education, Superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kowalski wrote, “While any reduction in special education tuition and out-of-district transportation
carries inherent risk, the District is committed to closely monitoring these areas throughout the year.” The substitute line in the same area of the budget was also reduced by $25,000, according to the superintendent’s letter.
