Raising the Roof for Humanity By Nicholas Checker Special to The Sound

There are a fair number of people, over the years, who have declared former President Jimmy Carter the ‘Greatest Ex-President of All-Time’ due largely to the work he did on behalf of people who were bereft of the three

basics: food, shelter, and clothing. The memorable folk singer Joan Baez said it in a song (Heaven Help Us All): “Heaven help the people with their backs against the wall …” Well, President Jimmy Carter (and his wife Rosalynn) did just that with devoted work through Habitat for Humanity in providing shelter-upon-shelter-upon-shelter for

the people with their backs against the wall … And over the past 22 years, the shorelinebased community group Raise the Roof has done so regionally for those in need of it … via Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven.

Acting Out a Book Award-winning author Sara Levine walks through attendees with a snapping turtle puppet during a Jan. 11 discussion of her book "Sensitive" at Willoughby Wallace Library in Stony Creek. The picture book follows a girl who is told she is too intense, too sensitive, too much, and to grow a thicker skin, but the words of others slip right through and press against her heart.
