Parents Await Next Step in Literacy Debate By Eric O'Connell Staff Writer OLD SAYBROOK
Despite parents’ requests, Old Saybrook’s Board of Education has not committed to scheduling another meeting to update the community on concerns over elementary literacy instruction, though board leaders say
work to address those concerns continues. On July 27, Board of Education Chair Karen Brodeur, D, sent a letter on behalf of the board following a July 9 special meeting that focused on the district’s plans to implement recommendations from a consultant hired to review the elementary literacy program.
In the letter, Brodeur said the board has retained an attorney to advise it on next steps and that, as of press time, no additional meetings had been scheduled before the board’s next regular meeting on Sept. 8. She said any additional public meeting would be See Parents Await Next Step page 8
