Clinton Town Council Denies Traffic Camera Ordinance in Split Vote By Eric O'Connell Staff Writer

In a split vote, the Clinton Town Council denied a proposed ordinance that would have allowed automated speed and red-light cameras in Clinton. Council members primarily cited citizen opposition at a March public hearing, as well as concerns about privacy and potential financial burdens, as reasons for the denial.

The proposed ordinance was first brought to the council’s attention last year by Clinton Police Department Chief Vincent DeMaio. If approved, the ordinance would have allowed the Police Department to install one speed camera on Killingworth Turnpike near The Morgan School and red-light cameras at three intersections: Exit 63 at the Big Y Plaza, North High Street at the Interstate 95 northbound ramp, and Route 1 at Hull

Street. DeMaio had said there would be no cost to the town because the program would have been funded through fines generated by violations. At an April 15 council meeting, Republicans Jerry Dunn, Chris Aniskovich, and Dennis Donovan were joined by Democrat Brian Roccapriore in voting against a motion
