Voters Reject Budget at Referendum By Aaron Rubin Staff Writer
Guilford taxpayers rejected the proposed 2027 fiscal budget at a referendum vote on April 21. The $129 million budget — which included the town operating budget of $50,682,844 and education budget of $78,730,359 — was defeated by a voting ratio
of 1,967 to 1,708, and town leadership will return to the drawing board for revisions. First Selectman Matt Hoey told the Guilford Courier he was “disappointed” with the result, “because the Board of Selectmen and Board of Education thought these were wellcrafted budgets.” Hoey acknowledged “the fact that there was a more significant tax
increase than we’ve traditionally passed along to our residents” and that the combined boards “weren’t necessarily happy” with an increase in the mill rate of 4%, even with more than $450,000 in cuts that were made prior to the referendum. See Voters Reject Budget page 10
